We all know, fasting is a worship that has a great reward. Especially if coupled with other sunnah-sunnah practices, such as reading prayers before breaking which will undoubtedly be granted by Allah SWT.
Prayer for Opening Fasting
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَسْأَلُكَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ الَّتِي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَيْئٍ أَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِي
Allahumma inni as’aluka birahmatika allati wasi’at kulla sya’I an taghfira lii
That is to say, “Yes Allah, I ask you with Your all-encompassing grace that You may forgive me.
These prayers are highly recommended by the Prophet and he once said, “Truly for the one who breaks his fast when he breaks his fast; the prayer that will not be rejected.” So, it is good to read the prayer and hope to get mercy from God.
In addition to reading prayers before fasting, you can also recite when breaking the fast as circumcised by Allah SWT, namely.
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ، وابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ، وثَبَتَ اْلأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَاللهُ
Dzahabath dhoma-u wabtalatil uruq wa tsbatal ajru insyaa-allah
That is, “Having lost thirst, has honed the esophagus, may there be a stipulated reward if Allah wills.”

6 Practices of Sunna before Opening Fasting
Pray for the Good
At dusk in Ramadan always has a special and special meaning for people who fast. Because in addition to waiting for breaking the fast, that time is the time of mustajab or the moments of prayer. For this reason, do not waste this opportunity to pray with respect to Allah.
Prophet Muhammad said:
“There are three people whose prayers are not rejected namely the just leader, the one who fasts when he breaks his fast, and the one who is wronged.” (CHR. Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah)
Expanding Mindfulness as a Practice of Sunah before Open Fasting
Dhikr is a simple and easy practice but has great virtues and great replies. Therefore, when there is free time while waiting for the Adhan Magrib, it should be used for remembrance.
God says:
“O you who believe, think (by mentioning Allah), do as much as you can.” (QS Al-Ahzab verse 41).
“(i.e.,) those who believe and their hearts are at peace with the remembrance of Allah. Remember, only by remembering Allah does the heart become serene.” (QS Ar-Ra’du verse 28).
Practice Sunna before Open Fasting, Tadarus or Reading the Qur’an
In addition to prayer and remembrance, we are also encouraged to fill the clear time of breaking by reading the Qur’an (tadarus). Al-Qur’an are two assemblies of worship that will intercede in the afterlife.
The exhortation to read the Qur’an during Ramadan as Allah says:
“Among the charity that is highly recommended to be carried out in the month of Ramadan is the al-Qur’an tadarus . Tadarus Al-Qur’an means reading, contemplating, studying, and understanding the revelations of Allah SWT which descended first on the night of Ramadan.” (QS. Al Baqarah verse 185).
With the tadarus of the Quran, the content of wisdom contained and collected in it can be a guide to the truth.
Feeding to Open Fasting
Have you ever seen people handing out food for iftar on the road? What they do is one of the practices of circumcision before breaking the fast.
Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said:
“Who feeds a fasting person, then for him the reward is like that of a fasting person, without diminishing the reward of the fasting person in the least.” (CHR. Tirmidzi. 807, Ibn Majah no. 1746, and Ahmad 5/192, hasan shahih)
If all of us are given more sustenance by Allah, take advantage of Ramadan for a lot of donating, among which is to feed iftar because the reward is very large.
Praying for People Who Feed Open
Well, if we happen to get food from others to break the fast, then repay his kindness by praying for it.
From ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar, Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,
“Whoever gives good to you, then give back. If you find nothing to repay his kindness, then do’ him until you are sure you have returned his kindness.” (CHR. Abu Daud no. 1672 and Ibn Hibban 8/199, shahih)
When the Prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was given a drink, he raised his head to the sky and uttered.
اللَّهُمَّ أَطْعِمْ مَنْ أَطْعَمَنِى وَأَسْقِ مَنْ أَسْقَانِى
“Allahumma ath’im man ath’amani wa asqi man asqoonii”
Meaning: O Allah, give food to the one who feeds me and give drink to the one who gives me drink]” (HR. Muslims no. 2055)
Reading “Bismillah”
Before the meal, say basmalah to be more barokah, reap a lot of goodness.
From ‘Aisyah radhiyallahu ‘anha, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,
“When one of you eats, then he should mention the name of Allah Ta’ala (i.e., read ‘bismillah’). If he forgets to mention the name Allah Ta’ala at the beginning, let him say: “Bismillaahi awwalahu wa aakhirohu (by the name of Allah at the beginning and the end)”.” (CHR. Abu Daud no. 3767 and At Tirmidhi no. 1858, hasan shahih)
It is a series of sunna practices that we can do before breaking the fast. The smallest practice will multiply in value if done in the month of Ramadan. For that do not waste this opportunity to do righteous deeds. Do not forget to teach it to children to be a good habit.
