Prophet's Story
The Story of Prophet Shu'aib As

The Prophet Shu'aib was appointed as a prophet to warn the Madyan who often cheat. Through the story of the Prophet Shu'aib, we know that Allah SWT will not like those who wronged and caused damage on Earth.

The Madyan tribe is a group of Arabs who live near Mount Sinai, in the land of Sham or what is now known as Syria. Nabu Syu'aib is also part of the Madyan Tribe.

"And unto the people of Madyan, We [sent] Shu'aib, their own brethren," reads the word of God according to the letter of Al-A'raf verse 85.

The Madyan are filled with infidels who commit evil and deceit. The majority of Madyan people work as traders.

In trading, residents of Madyan often commit fraud. They seek profit in an improper way such as a reduced scale or measure. The goods sold are also often counterfeited. This condition was very disturbing to the community at that time.

The Prophet Shu'aib then began the mission of awakening the people of Madyan. "O my people! Worship Allah. There is no god [god] for you other than Him. Verily, there has come to you a clear proof from your Lord. Perfect the measure and the scales, and do not harm anyone in the least" the Prophet Shu'aib told the Madyan.

The Prophet Shu'aib also invited the Madyan to stop doing mischief on Earth. Some of the other Madyanes worked as farmers. But often they do damage.

The Madyan also did not believe in God. They made Aikah or a piece of land a god. The Madyan also often frighten and hinder people who want to believe.

"O my people! Worship Allah, hope for the [merit] of the last day, and do not wander the earth doing mischief" said the Prophet Shu'aib according to Al-Ankabut verse 36.

Instead of being listened to, the Madyans rejected the teachings of the Prophet Shu'aib.

The residents of Madyan even threatened to stoning the Prophet Shu'aib if they continued to arrange their trade. They also threatened to expel the Prophet Shu'aib and his followers if they did not follow their religion.

The Prophet Shu'aib then rejected the invitation and submitted to Allah SWT as the best decision maker.

"And we do not deserve to return to him unless Allah, our Lord wills. The knowledge of our Lord encompasses everything. To Allah we rely. O our Lord, give a decision between us and our people with the right [fair]. You are the best decision-maker" Shu'aib told his people.

The prophet Shu'aib warned that if the Madyan did not change, the punishment of Allah SWT would soon come. However, the Madyan continued to act arbitrarily.

Allah has inflicted the punishment on the Madyan at night and in the morning with an unexpected torment. God brought a great earthquake and a thunderous voice to the people of Madyan.

"They belied [Shu'aib], and they were struck by a great earthquake, and they became corpses in their dwellings, " said Allah in Al-Ankabatu verse 37.

The Prophet Shu'aib and his followers were saved by Allah. Allah bestows mercy and blessings on those who believe.

Many things can be taken from the story of the Prophet Shu'aib and the Madyan Tribe. The Prophet Shuaib taught in buying and selling, traders and sellers must be fair and not harm others. Scales and measures must be given perfectly so that the sustenance obtained is lawful with Allah.

The story of the Prophet Shu'aib also teaches humans that Allah SWT does not like people who wrong and make damage on the earth. Those who wronged and caused mischief will receive punishment from Allah SWT.
