THE STORY OF PROPHET ADAM AS

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala told the angels about the creation of Adam ‘alaihis greetings, He said:

“Verily I wish to make a caliph on earth.” (QS. Al Baqara: 30)

Creatures that replace each other. Thus Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala told the angels about the creation of Adam as He told the great things before it was realized.

Then the angels asked Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala to explain the wisdom of man's creation, because the angels knew that among men there were those who made mischief in the earth and shed blood. According to the Qatadah, they knew this because they saw the creatures before Adam, the jinn and the Hins (a group of jinn or a group of weak jinn). According to Ibn Umar, two thousand years before Adam was created, the jinn already existed (occupy the earth), then they shed blood, so Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala sent an army of angels, and they shed blood, then they drove him into the sea.”

According to the angels, if man's wisdom was to worship Allah, then they would have worshipped Him, they said,

“Why do You want to make (caliph) on earth a person who will do harm to him and shed blood, whereas We always glorify You and purify You?” Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala said, “Verily I know what you do not know.” (QS. Al Baqara: 30)

He knows the greater good by creating Adam and his descendants, for there will be among them prophets and apostles, shiddiqins, martyrs, the scholars and those who practice His religion, who love Him, and follow His apostles.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala created Adam ‘alaihis greeting from the earth and its water, then formed it with the best shape, then He blew the spirit into it, so be he as a living man made up of flesh, blood, and bones. The day of creation of Adam ‘alaihis greetings is Friday, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallambersabda,

“The best day that the sun rises on him is Friday. On that day Adam was created, on that day he was put into a surge, and on that day he was expelled from it, and the Apocalypse is not QS.adi except on Friday.” (CHR. Bukhari and Muslim)

He shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam also said,

“Surely Allah Ta’ala created Adam from a handful that He grasped from all the lands on the face of the earth. Therefore, the children of Adam are present according to the state of the land (the color and character), so among them there are red, white, black and between. Some are soft, hard, ugly and good.” (CHR. Tirmidhi, he said, “This sadist hasan shahih.” This hadith is also set aside by Shaykh Al Albani in Al Mishkat (100) and Ash Shahiihah (1630). According to the compiler of Tuhfatul Ahwadzi, this hadith is narrated also by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Hakim and Baihaqi)

After Adam lived and could move, then Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala taught him the names of all things, He said, saying,

“And He taught Adam the names (objects) of the whole,” (QS. Al Baqara: 31)

According to Ibn Abbas, the names commonly known to humans, such as humans, animals, land, flat land, sea, mountains, camels, donkeys and so forth such as people and others. According to Mujahid, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala taught him the name of every animal, every bird and everything. According to Ar Rabii’, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ taught him the names of the angels.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala wanted to show the primacy of Adam and his position at His side to the angels, so He showed the angels everything that had been taught to Adam, He said:

“Tell Me the names of those things if you are right!” (QS. Al Baqara: 31)

The angels answered, too,

“Holy Thee, We know nothing but what Thou hast taught us.” (QS. Al Baqara: 32)

So Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala commanded Adam to tell them the names of things that the angels did not know; so Adam began to mention the names of the things shown to him, then Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala said to the angels,

“Didn't I tell you that I know the secrets of the heavens and the earth and know what you are born with and what you hide?” (QS. Al Baqara: 33)

Then QS.Let there be a dialogue between Adam ‘alaihis greetings with the angels as the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam tells us:

“Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala created Adam with a height of 60 cubits, then He said, “Go and say greetings to the angels, then listen to their salutes to you; as your greetings and greetings of your descendants.” So Adam said, “As Salaamu ‘alaikum.” They replied, “As Salaamu ‘alaika wa rahmatullah,” they add “wa rahmatullah.” So everyone who enters into heaven follows the likeness of Adam, and the form of beings is constantly diminishing (the shorter) until now.” (CHR. Bukhari and Muslim)

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala ordered the angels to bow down to Adam in his honor, so they bowed down except Satan, he refused to bow down and was arrogant to the command of his Lord, then Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala asked him –whereas He knows-more,

Then the devil answered with arrogance,

“I am better than him, for You created me out of fire, and he You created out of the earth.” (QS.. Shaad: 76)

Satan does not realize that the land is better than fire, the land is more useful than fire, because in the land there is calm, easy to cultivate and grow plants, while in the fire there is a condition that is not directed, light, fast and burning.

So Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala distanced Satan from His mercy and made him driven and cursed, He said,

“Then ye come out of heaven; verily ye are damned,– Verily My curse remains upon you until the day of vengeance.” (QS.. Shaad: 77-78)

Then the Devil hated Adam and his descendants more and more, he swore by the name of God to decorate evil upon them, saying, “For the sake of Your power, I will lead them all astray,—Except Your sincere servants among them.” (QS.. Shaad: 82-83)

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala said to him,

“Verily I will fill Hell with your kind and with those who follow you among them all.” (QS.. Shaad: 85)

As Suddiy recounts from Abu Shalih and Abu Malik of Ibn Abbas, and from Murrah of Ibn Mas’ud as well as from some friends, that they said, “Devil was expelled from heaven and Adam was placed in heaven, so Adam walked in heaven alone without a partner who could appease him, he slept, when he woke up, it turned out that near his head was a woman sitting, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala created it from his ribs.

Adam then asked him, “Who are you?” He replied, “A woman.” Adam asked, “What were you created for?” He replied, “For you to feel at ease with me.” Then the angels told him to look at the knowledge that Adam had, “What is his name, Adam?” He replied, “Hawa’.” They say again, “Why (called) Hawa’?” Adam replied, “Because he was created from something alive.”

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala ordered Adam and his wife Hawa’ to stay in heaven and eat the fruits that are there and stay away from a tree as a test to both, He said,

“O Adam! observe by you and your wife this paradise, and eat her many good foods wherever you like, and do not approach this tree, which causes you to be among the wrongdoers.” (QS. Al Baqara: 35)

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala also warned Adam and his wife not to be tempted by Satan and reminded the hostility of Satan to both, He said,

“O Adam! Verily this (devil) is an enemy to you and to your wife, so let it not be that she expels you both from heaven, causing you harm.” (QS. Thah: 117)

The devil began to think about how to mislead Adam and Eve’, after finding a way, so he did the plan, he went to Adam and Eve’ and said,

“O Adam! Will I show you the tree of eternity and the kingdom that will not perish?” (QS.. Thah: 120)

So Adam and Eve confirmed the words of Satan because of his oath, which according to both of them there could be no one who dared to swear falsely in the name of God, so Adam and Eve’ went to the tree and ate its fruit. When that happened a shocking event, both opened their aurat and naked because of his rage and both felt ashamed and sad, immediately they both came to the trees and plucked the leaves to cover the aurat, then Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala said to Adam and Hawa’,

“Didn't I ban you both from the tree and I tell you, “Surely the devil is a real enemy to you both?” (QS.. Al A’raaf: 22)

Adam and Hawa’ were very sorry to have acted in the name of God, and they immediately repented and were privileged, both saying,

“Yes Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and give us grace, we shall be among the losers.” (QS.. Al A’raaf: 23)

After Adam and Hawa’ regretted and privileged, then Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala received his repentance and ordered both to come down to earth and live there.

Adam began to live on earth and opened a new page of his life journey there. On that earth, Adam had many descendants, he educated and taught them and told them that life on earth was a test and a trial, and they should hold fast to Allah's guidance and beware of Satan's deceit. He also invited his descendants to worship God, to tell them the truth and the faith, to warn them of the dangers of shirk, of obedience, and the dangers of obeying Satan until he dies.

When Prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam dimi’kan to the sky, then He met Prophet Adam ‘alaihis greetings in the first sky and said to Him, “This is your father Adam ‘alaihis greetings, say hello to him.” So he said hello to him and Adam ‘alaihis salutations answered his greetings and said, “Welcome come the godly son and the godly prophet.” (CHR. Bukhari and Muslim)

The prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam also tells us that man will come to Adam ‘alaihis greeting and say, “O Adam, you are the father of man. God created you with His hand, blew His spirit (creation) upon you, and commanded the angels to bow down to you and place you in heaven, did you not intercede for us to your Lord, do you not see our situation and what is happening to us? But Adam ‘alaihis greeting could not give it and mention his age. He was ashamed of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala for eating the forbidden tree so he told them to go to another prophet.
