Istidraj is taken from the word 'daraja' (in Arabic) which means to rise one level to the next. However, it is better known as the term doom which is pleasure.

In the Quran the discussion of istidraj is discussed in Surat Al-An'am verse 44 which reads as follows.

فَلَمَّا نَسُوا۟ مَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ أَبْوَٰبَ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا فَرِحُوا۟ بِمَآ أُوتُوٓا۟ أَخَذْنَٰهُم بَغْتَةً فَإِذَا هُم مُّبْلِسُو

Fa lamma nasu ma izhukkiru bihi fatahna 'alaihim abwaba kulli sya`, hatta izla farihu bima utu akhazhum bagtatan fa izla hum mublisun

It means: And when they forgot the warning which was given to them, We opened all the doors of pleasure for them; and when they rejoiced in what was given to them, We tormented them with utter confusion, and then they fell into despair.

how may not be aware that this is a characteristic of istidraj. If you find yourself rarely worshiping, but in fact your work feels very smooth, it could be an termidraj given to you.

The abundant work and sustenance that you receive is the true test of Allah SWT. Because, Allah SWT wants to see, whether with the sustenance you get it will make you more negligent and leave worship, or can make you remember Allah SWT as the Exalted Provider.

Another feature you experience istidraj is feeling calm. Here, the calmness referred to here is that you feel fine and do not feel guilty or anxious when neglecting to carry out worship or do activities that are immoral. You don't even feel the slightest regret in your heart after doing the above-mentioned thing.

Pain is a blessing given by Allah SWT. When sick, sins fall and prayer is granted. However, if you feel rarely sick and often do worship or lack of worship, it could be also an istidraj. For indeed, pain is a test from Allah SWT so that his servant always remembers Him and asks for His healing.

So that we are kept away from istidraj, penance and routine worship become one way. Ask Allah for forgiveness SWT and always remember Him in times of pleasure or difficulty, is the best way to avoid yourself from istidraj. Do not forget also to always worship, pray five times, and read the Quran, so that we are always close to Allah SWT.

That was the understanding, characteristics and how to avoid istidraj. May we belong to those who believe and be kept away from the istidraj.
