"Hunting? You want to hunt now?" Dimas looked at me in disbelief.
I nodded slowly. "Tomorrow the night Grussel accepted me back to join the hunt. After a week of doing nothing, I was afraid that my instincts and abilities would diminish. Besides, I'm not a good hunter. I need a little personal practice. You should have known that."
"But it's dangerous to cross into Elvian territory."
"Of course not. I'm not going there, just enough forest around the city" I said with a big smile.
The man sighed softly and rubbed my head. "Alright, on one condition. I'm coming with you to make sure you're okay."
"No problem."
The sky was completely dark, the streaks of twilight light in the sky had disappeared. Under the stars, we left the tower. Pinning a step towards the headquarters of the 'Night Dive'.
About half an hour walk, we arrived. I waited in front of the shop beside the headquarters, while Dimas picked up my weapon device. It's not time for me to come back. If Grussel forces in, Grussel will kick me out and probably increase my sentence. The old man was very disciplined about time. One minute later, it was considered too late. I've been hit many times because my hunt passed the deadline that the man gave.
Fifteen minutes passed. Dimas out skid through the back. Of course it would be a big question if he was caught carrying my weapon out of the base. I put on my gear right away. A dagger about thirty inches long I hung at the waist. Then attach a bag of arrows and a short bow to the back.
"Let's go!" I said with passion. We hurried to leave the place and headed out of the city.
When he saw Dimas, he had also armed himself with a short sword. That thing is often used to finish our hunt. In addition to learning about hunting, the two of us were also taught about martial arts and using weapons in the Dark Night. Dimas chose swordsmanship because he said, in the martial arts Wushu—which he had studied—there is the art of sword. So, he already knew the basics. Or so he thinks.
While the reason I chose archery science because it was inspired by the various games I played. Whenever I play fantasy-adventure games, I always choose an archer character. Because I thought an archer was so cool. The second reason is my new body. Now I'm no longer human, but Haier-Elvian. Race that has super sharp hearing and vision. With this privilege, being an archer was a perfect fit for me.
"Hey!" exciting Dimas.
"What?"
"We won't be hunting for long. Just find one animal, then go home."
"Yes, yes" I replied lazily.
To be honest, I'm quite upset with this attitude. Too worried about something. She was like a mother who was anxious every time her son went out to play. Can't be this, can't be that. Not to mention his chatty mouth. For some reason since he had been here, he had always been over-anxious like that.
After a long walk, the western city gate was seen several hundred meters ahead. I immediately greeted the guard who was closing half the gate. They know we're hunters of rare animals. I don't know what Grussel did, it could be that he bribed, or even threatened them. These guards always let us in and out at will. Just mention Grussel's name, they'll let you through the gate. Even if possible, they will roll out the red carpet.
The frenetic city began to be swallowed into the silence of the night as our backs turned away from the gate. Only the sound of insects and the rustling of dry leaves falling in the wind was there at this time. The trees here are not tight, because the city has been cleared to open fields and rice fields. Flickering fireflies lead us in the dark rice field. Continues to lead to the forest, before finally parting at the edge of the pesawahan.
My feet immediately stepped on the hard ground as soon as they reached the mouth of the forest. Small rocks scattered as if to harm anyone who is not careful.
Half an hour on, the trees were getting tighter and darker. Rubiel's light was not visible because of the thick clouds. For me this is no problem. My eyes can still see as well as during the day. Unlike Dimas who was just an ordinary human, he still needed light to see in the darkness. That's why he held a small lantern in his hand.
It can illuminate a few meters around it. Not too broad indeed. But that's what's important for hunters like us. We can't let others know our location because the light is too bright, can we? It is also easy to turn off and on. So that makes it easy to immediately hide when there is an Elvian approaching.
I motioned to Dimas to stop. My ears caught a voice. I closed my eyes in order to catch the sound. Like a projection on a screen, I could see clearly in my mind whatever was around, even with my eyes closed. Like Dimas watching me with a tense face. The fallen leaves fell on my hair. Also hundreds of ant colonies building giant nests right under my feet. Everything can be seen from every direction very clearly. I call this ability 'Super Indra'.
Then, I directed my Super Indra even further at the source of the previous sound. The projection in my mind penetrated deep into the depths of the forest. Passing through rows of towering pine trees. Behind the thickets near the small, slow-moving river, there was an adult deer that was eating fruits. The voice I heard came from the fruit that was crushed when it was chewed by its teeth. The body is fat, the horns are big. It looks like a good hunt. It was lucky to find him so soon.
Then I stopped my Super Indra, turning towards Dimas. "There was a great deer five hundred meters to the north. We have to get there before the beast leaves."
"Then, come on!"
In the next second, we were both already lightning-fast. Through trees and cobblestone streets. I'm ahead leading the way, while Dimas is behind. I ran while reactivating the Super Indra ability, worried that danger was approaching. Although the radius is not broad, only a few meters.
Learning from my stupidity last week, I was always ready and alert every time I went into the forest. In the forest that was still included in this human territory, there was indeed no Elvian. But the name of danger must always threaten from anywhere. So I activated it just in case.
My hand again beckoned to stop when it was a hundred meters away from the deer. Dimas turned off his little lantern, and depended on me for sight. The beast could have escaped upon hearing the sound of our footsteps. Of course I don't want to risk it. We both approached very carefully. Slowly but surely, I began to approach the target.
Quintessentially from behind a large rooted tree. Near the thickets ahead, a male deer was eating fruits that fell from a tree. The twin horns are huge. Deer is not a mystical animal, but the horns can still be sold at a high price. My wallet can finally be filled again, after a week of continuous diminishing.
I nodded my head towards Dimas who was hiding in the tree next door. He knows what I mean. It's a very simple plan. I shoot his feet, and he will finish off the game. It's standard strategy when I hunt with him.
Still with my eyes fixed forward, I took out an arrow and placed it on the bow. I took a standby stance and pulled my bow to the maximum. The weapon I used was a short bow that had no long firing range. Yet this was enough to cripple the prey that was right in front of me.
I took a deep breath. Sharpen the eyesight of the victim. In one breath the next, I took off the arrow.
The deer screamed when my arrow hit his leg. Without a second thought, Dimas immediately stepped forward. He thrust his short sword into the deer's body, and immediately finished it off.
"Good Dimas!"
I ran to him. Watching the male deer thrashing before his death. His eyes still looked at me strongly. Maybe I'm asking 'What's wrong with me?'.
I have experienced this many times, but still make my feelings unpleasant every time I look at my prey. Dimas had already started to cut the antlers of this deer with his sword, no matter though this animal was still not completely dead.
I released the last arrow right in the middle of the deer, to free it from suffering. Little by little, the hue of life began to fade from his eyes. A few seconds later, he was completely dead. Then I crouched down. Closing wide eyes, and stroking the fur. That's my special ritual on every hunted animal I kill. The animals died because of my selfishness. So I thought, at least I could pay them one last salute.
"I don't pray for him, but give him my last respects."
"That's the same, stupid! Come on, help me skin him too!"
If I stall for more time, he'll definitely keep yelling at me. So I don't want to join him immediately. Split the giant horn that he had cut into small pieces. We both skinned him. Because this deer skin can be used as various accessories and clothing raw materials. There are indeed breeders who breed deer in the city. But of course the quality is much different from wild deer that are very thick.
While being engrossed in skinning a deer, my ears suddenly caught a terrible rumbling sound.
"What's wrong?" asked Dimas who saw me suddenly in a standby position.
I activated Indra Super and tried to see the projections around. Although it had been extended to my maximum radius of several hundred meters, I still saw nothing. Only trees and shrubs exist. However, the sound was quite clear and the vibration of the ground was excited. It seems that it is not an animal, but a human.
"It looks like a group of people are heading this way. A lot," I said.
"Let's hide!"
"But where? There are only trees around."
Dimas was silent for a moment. "That's a great place!"
That's how it ended up, me and Dimas hiding in the trees. In this forest, the trees grew tall and large. The distance between the surface of the ground and myself was about ten meters. We're safe for a while, maybe.
The rumbling sound was increasingly clear even though it did not use my Super Indra. Dimas, who was just an ordinary human, could capture his voice. His face stiffened while paying attention to the direction of the sound source.
Not long after, came a group of horse-drawn carriages that were speeding. They looked like rows of ants, lined up backwards in a single line. The tree we both hid in shook as the group flashed by. Rather than the name of the horse carriage containing passengers, it would be more appropriate to call the carriage pulled by the horses was cargo. Specialized merchant cars to transport various merchandise.
"It looks like they are a trading group," Dimas said slowly.
"Wait, aren't city merchants used to morning expeditions?"
As far as I know the merchants of the city made expeditions when the sun began to rise. They expected blessings from the Sun God while traveling.
"That means they're not a trade group in this country. If you look at their clothes and horses covered in thick animal skins, chances are they came from Northern Sigrotia Iuna. The country is famous for its extreme winters" Dimas explained.
"I've never seen them before."
"of course. Because they entered this country by infiltrating. Definitely to avoid the customs of this country."
"How dare they infiltrate this much, huh?"
"It's possible that they know the weak points of surveillance of the country's patrolling knights. So they're confident in this super-crazy act."
After some time, the riding trade group moved away. Dimas and I decided to get down from the tree and immediately go back to the city. It's already night time. Maybe this time I'm avoiding trouble. But who knows, there will be a big problem if you linger in this forest.
Though there hasn't been a minute since I said it, trouble comes back. My carelessness repeated. When the middle of jumping down to the branch that was below, suddenly my legs slipped because it took a wrong footing. The branches I stepped on were too fragile. Inevitably, the branch immediately broke and crashed my body down from a height.
"JUST ...!!" yelled Dimas in horror.
Membuatku merasakan rasa sakit luar biasa.
Kesadaranku perlahan memudar pelan tapi pasti. Seluruh tenaga meninggalkan tubuh ini. Merana di tengah kegelapan. Hal terakhir kali kulihat adalah Dimas yang berlari kencang mengejarku di belakang kargo.
Aku tersenyum kecut, dasar idiot! Manusia biasa sepertimu mana bisa mengejar laju kargo berkuda ini?
Dasar dia itu ... selalu saja cemas berlebihan.
Dia benar ... benar temann ... sejati. Tapi dia—
... –mang bodohh ....
