Marrying the Rich Widow

Marrying the Rich Widow
Chapter 24 The Burden of the Past

Cherry is transfixed, seeing David leave her for the umpteenth time for Megan's sake. He still remembers how this morning David apologized and persuaded him to stay. David says he never did anything to Megan, but he also doesn't say anything to deny Megan's stomach.

This morning Cherry still doubted David, but after seeing Megan's deceit, Cherry began to think that it was impossible if the pregnancy was fake. Cherry feels she has to investigate, she doesn't want Megan to cheat on David.

The night is getting late, David and Megan are not back yet. Cherry restlessly waited for him in the room. When he heard the car enter the courtyard, Cherry immediately headed downstairs. He won't let Megan keep David in his room tonight.

Megan holds David's arm when she enters the house. Her makeup looked chaotic, it seemed like something bad had happened.

"Megan lost her baby" David told Cherry.

"How can you?" ask Cherry not to believe it.

"The doctor didn't find anything in his stomach."

"I lost my baby because of you! Howdy you!" Megan yells at Cherry.

Cherry took a few steps back, she didn't want Megan to scratch her face.

"Calm down, Megan. You need a break." David led her into the room.

Cherry sat on the couch in the lounge, waiting for David. He had no interest in listening to or seeing what was happening in the room. After two hours, David was just seen coming out of Megan's room.

David was surprised to see Cherry still awake, "are you waiting for me?"

"Yes." Yeah."

"I'm tired." David walked into the room upstairs without waiting for Cherry. Cherry followed him from behind.

The two were silent for a while while while in the room, leaving the room so quiet.

"How did Megan lose her baby?" Cherry began to ask.

"Can you still ask?" David scrunched his eyebrows.

"I didn't do anything to Megan, let alone push her. Whether you believe it or not. He's not that stupid." Cherry can't stand David's behavior because Megan is a child who doesn't know anything, "what do doctors say?"

David did not respond to Cherry's remarks.

"Is it true that Megan was pregnant and miscarried? Why is he allowed to go home? Is the bleeding severe?" Cherry asked like a detective.

"Cherry! He's in mourning." David looks angry.

"Ah, and you shut your eyes over everything that happened! Where did you check it? I'll ask the doctor who examined him directly."

"You're just jealous!" David was still emotional.

Cherry let out a long sigh, holding herself back, "yes, I'm jealous. How could I possibly be willing to see my husband seduced by another woman."

"Cherry - -"

"That's it, it's pointless. In your eyes she's a good girl who hasn't seen the cruelty of the world." Cherry felt free to argue with David who always won, "I'm tired. I want to sleep."

Then Cherry lay on the bed and pulled the blanket over her body, "since morning I have promised to stay here. Take it easy, I'm not going anywhere."

Cherry closed her eyes, pretending to sleep. But his heart hurts. What he was afraid of all this time happened, David dumped him, so quickly. He himself did not believe it.

David looked at Cherry who had been lying down, she was so close but felt distant. Wanted to hug him but it was like something was holding him back.

After a long time in his place, David came out of the room and headed for his study. Then he made a phone call from his cell phone.

"Alexander's."

"What's up, David?"

"I want you to check something."

Cherry woke up early this morning. He prepared all David's needs before he woke up. For more than a week he never did it again. Actually he longed for David's warm and romantic attitude, but he did not dare to let go of his longing, "I don't want to be hurt any more." he murmured.

"Who hurt you?" David had been leaning against the walk in closet door.

Cherry was surprised to hear that, she did not hear any footsteps approaching.

"Say, who would dare hurt you?"

Cherry could not answer him, because what he meant was himself.

"I'll help Mia prepare breakfast."

"Who allows it?"

Cherry let out a long breath without speaking.

"I haven't punished you yet" David said.

"punish me? Why?" Cherry's thoughts immediately fell on Megan. Did David really think he was the one who pushed Megan?

"Every night, I don't know how many times the word 'you' has come out of your lips."

Cherry furrowed her brows, she could not believe David would discuss it. Last night he was an emotion, where maybe he called David affectionately.

"Please be punished" said Cherry resigned, he knew David would not budge.

"Come on, bathe me." Without waiting for Cherry's approval, David steps into the bathroom. Cherry followed behind him.

"Your!" Cherry hit David's back which stopped suddenly.

Cherry grunted in annoyance.

David spread out his hands in the bathroom. Cherry rushed up to him and let go of her pajamas, still resentfully.

"Smile." David ordered.

Cherry forced her smile stiffly.

David laughed, "so ugly" he said.

"Cherryku ... don't you miss me?" Suddenly David asked softly.

Cherry misheard the question, she was still trying to let go of David's pajamas.

"I miss you." David hugged Cherry.

Cherry just stayed in David's warm embrace, she was afraid to let go of her miss, afraid of feeling a deeper pain.

"Don't be angry anymore. I'm sorry." David hugged her tighter.

"sick." Cherry pushes David's body.

David pulled Cherry's body and kissed her softly. Cherry's defensive wall was destroyed instantly, she could no longer stem the longing. He was also in David's cradle.

An hour later David had dressed up, Cherry helping him pair his tie.

"Why do your lips keep on pursing?" ask David.

Cherry is still putting on a sour face after what they just went through in the bathroom.

"Smile, or we'll do it round two" David teased.

As Cherry changed her face, she forced herself to smile. Truly, Cherry was cursing her that easily fell again in David's arms.

"Done" said Cherry after finishing the last tie.

"Come here." David took Cherry by the hand, taking her to sit on the edge of the bed.

David looked at Cherry who did not say much, "at that time Rachel was the backbone of her family, her parents were unable to work, while Megan was still in school." David let out a long sigh, "a few months after we got married, Rachel had an accident. She .."

Cherry saw David who was so fragile when he told her about his late wife. He never told me about his first wife. The hand of David still hangs his words.

"He died. It's all because of me." David paused his sentence for a moment, recalling the events of the past, "we're in a meeting outside the office. Because there was a file left behind, Rachel drove herself back to the office. Then the accident happened. If only I hadn't let him go back to the office, he ..." David covered his face, the sentence hanging he couldn't finish.

Cherry stood up from her seat, then gently buried David's head in her chest. It seemed like he was crying, Cherry had just seen the other side of David.

After a moment of drowning in grief, David raised his head. David holds Cherry's hand, "I was the cause of Rachel's accident. Since then I have been responsible for looking after his family. I hope you can accept Megan."

Accepting? Cherry didn't quite understand David's intentions. Will Megan be the honey?

David spoke so long this time. Usually he just talks as necessary.

"Darling, the accident was inevitable, it wasn't my fault dear. Rachel must be calm there by now." Cherry did not mention Megan, however she did not want Megan to cheat David. Cherry will be investigating today.

"Tok-tok-tok." The door was knocked, "Master David, Doctor Alexander is coming" Mia said behind the door.

"Take him into the study" David said without changing positions.

"Good, Sir." Answer Mia.

"Doctor Alexander? Is darling sick?" ask Cherry.

"No. There's another need."

"All right, meet him. I have to go to college."

"Aren't you waiting for me?"

"I'll be bad luck, let Johan deliver." said Cherry make an excuse. This morning he was planning to go somewhere else.

"All right, go." David kissed Cherry's forehead, then they walked together out of the room.

"Megan Xia, is she Rachel Xia's relative?" asked Alexander who had been in David's study.

"His sister." replied David.

"Then why did you take her to check up on her at the obstetrician?"

"His stomach hurts, it looks like a miscarriage."

Alexander handed me some papers from Megan's hospital yesterday, "she's not pregnant. Urine test expressed negative, the uterine wall did not experience thickening."

"Where might Megan lie." Although David requested a complete copy of the examination results on Alexander, it did not mean he did not trust Megan.

"There's no bleeding. The results of the examination stated she was not pregnant, not a miscarriage." Alexander confirmed the contents of the sheet of paper that David was holding.

David was silent.

"Do you doubt the doctors at my hospital? We're doing a re-examination. I'll fire those who misdiagnose."

David was still reading the results of the examination, he seemed to be in disbelief.
