WILLIAM'S EVIDENCE

The fire almost scorched the entire two-story house that was originally painted blue. Police lines were also set around the scene. Some residents are still seen huddling there. There are those who look at each other pity, there are also those who whisper to each other whether talking about what. However, no one was allowed to approach, including William.

The young man was still fixated among the citizens, staring at the tragic scene before him with a blank look. Until he saw two medics out of there, carrying a body bag. On the left side, two police officers were carrying out an escort. William, who had just regained consciousness, hurried off to get to them.

"Can I see who's inside?" ask one of the police officers with a choked voice.

The attendant raised his eyebrows, staring at William full of probes. Upon seeing the shocked and somewhat pale face of the young man, the police thought that William might be one of the family members of the victim.

"Are you a member of the family of the victim?" he asked, trying to convince his assumptions.

William shakes. "No. I'm his future fiancee" he said sadly.

The police nodded in understanding. "Do you know any of the victims' family members?" ask again.

William returned to shake. "As far as I know, my fiancee only lives alone with her father. His mother died a few years ago. They live here alone. For the other brothers, I still don't know" he explained.

The police nodded in understanding. "For now it seems like you are the only person we can ask for help, because there is no one else we can contact. For that, if you do not mind, please follow us to help take care of the needs in the hospital. After that, we'll also ask you to testify at the police station."

William could not refuse. He also took it. "I'm ready. I will work together as best I can" he said. At least, that was what he was currently able to do for Karina.

The policeman was pleased that William did not refuse to cooperate.

William looked back at the body bag. He pointed at her, asking back. "Can ...."

"You can see it after arriving at the hospital" one of the medics cut. "We only found one victim, and we can assure you that the victim was a man."

William could guess that it was Karina's father, Bramantyo. She felt sad for what happened, but at the same time couldn't be denied knowing that it wasn't Karina, she felt able to breathe a little relieved.

At least, the current Karina must be fine, he thought. But where is that woman now?

"Alright, Mr. William. Since you've agreed to help us, let's go." The police allowed William to follow them.

William was ripped from his daydream. He nodded then followed the officer to get into the ambulance. Before actually getting into the white car, William turned bitterly at the debris of the building behind him. He did not expect that in both times of his arrival, his eyes would be presented with an amazingly terrible sight.

Just a moment ago, when he had just arrived at the scene, he felt his heart had stopped functioning. He stared blankly at the rubble of the blue-painted house whose color had turned blackish, and part of the roof had partially collapsed. For a moment William was only able to fall silent, his body sweating. It was a house that a few days ago had been beside her, a house that had given her a little warmth. Unknowingly, William's throat choked and he shed tears.

"Karina!" he screamed with a broken feeling. She thought that her lover must be trapped in fear inside. He even tried to barge in to look for her, in hopes of still being able to find her and it was not too late.

"Wait for me, okay," he grumbled as he set foot.

“Letasin me! I have to find my future fiance!” rebelled.

William's heart ached more and more to imagine what Karina was like in there. The woman must have been waiting for him, hoping that he would come to save her.

"Karina!" William kept trying to crumble forward.

"Son, awake!" snatched one of the residents. "You can further complicate the work of firefighters. The police will arrive soon. Just be patient and pray that everything will be fine" he advised.

William stared at the blaze that was still blindly, not yet extinguished completely. Ruins occasionally sounded, echoing in the ears. But William had no intention of caring about it. He just wanted to go and save his girlfriend. He did not want to be late and regret it. The young man continued to fight, trying to escape from the people who were holding him back. Unfortunately, his body that was getting tired was not comparable to their strength.

"Do you have no heart? Don't you have any feelings at all, huh! What if the one in there is one of your families, one of your loved ones!" William accused the citizens with his eyes reddened in anger.

They all fell silent. They understood the young man's feelings, they realized that if they were in the same position they might as well. However, they also could not let William enter just like a hero of misfortune, and ended up being a victim. The safety of one more person will be at stake.

"Why are you quiet?!" William looked at them one by one, his eyes filled with determination and hatred. No one answered William until police sirens were heard. They breathed a sigh of relief, the officer has arrived. Even so, residents did not dare to immediately release the young man who was being struck by panic.

***

As promised, William agreed to represent Karina as the person in charge of Bramantyo's data. It is needed for autopsy, DNA testing and investigation purposes. The body of the middle-aged man, who was nearly eighty-five percent burned, will be put in a refrigerator, waiting until the victim's family comes to pick him up. After all the process was completed, William was immediately taken to the Police Chief to be questioned and become a witness.

That morning the sun had a timid peek when William reached the police station. He walked into a room and was invited to sit facing the investigator.

"Please, brother William Ferdinand," the investigator asked in a formal tone.

The fatigue and sleepiness that plagued William's brain had completely disappeared without him knowing. The young man sat very quietly, although the burden of sadness was still clearly visible from his eyes. This was not the first time the young man had been in the room in similar circumstances. In recent weeks, the young man has become familiar with the police station.

"So, Miss Karina was able to contact you when the incident took place?" The investigator asked directly.

William nodded in confirming. "Really, Sir. He called me. Or rather, maybe accidentally contacted me."

"You mean?"

"He didn't talk to me directly."

William then told in detail what kind of conversation he had heard when he received a call from Karina this morning. After hearing the young man's testimony, police assumed the fire was intentional.

"There is a possibility that Miss Karina has been a victim of kidnapping" investigators said.

William was surprised. He then began to associate it with cases he had reported lately.

"Sorry, Sir. Is there any chance that the kidnapper is the same person associated with my previous case?"
