The My Hollywood System

The My Hollywood System
Chapter 100

“As you can tell yourself, I have been planning this book for years, with all its sequels and prequels in mind. So I want Warden Books to be a cooperative partner with whom I can work and publish all my books.” Terry mastered his decisiveness after hearing that. He could finally understand why Will was so successful at such a young age. He did not let the excitement of short-term profits take hold of his head and wanted to clear up the details before continuing.

His act of not mentioning his name in the script alone was enough to see the sincerity of many publishers. If they knew it was Will Evan's book, at least some of them would agree to publish it, based solely on his current fame.

"What do you want? How many sequel intervals are you planning? ”

terry asked, this time thinking of Will as more of a business partner than a random writer to persuade.

“I want all of the book's sequels to come out in the next three years, not including this year that's almost gone. I want the first book to reach the shelf as quickly as possible. In addition, I want the sequel to be released after an interval of six months. You can use my name for publicity to extract the maximum potential from the book. ”

will answer. For Will, both the book and the movie are equally important, as the book will create a fan base that will help the movie and vice versa.

“You know that I can get the top publishers to publish books for me as long as I reveal my name, right? What can you offer me so that I do not opt out of such publishers?”

Will asked with a charming smile on his face. To Terry, it looked more sinister than charming.

Terry shook his head as he said.

“You obviously don't have much experience in the writing industry. I have been working in this industry for 20 years now. For 10 years, I have worked in top publishers as their departmental and regional manager. I have read tens of thousands of words per day from tons of manuscripts, and only a handful of them have been chosen to be published. Of course, given your fame, most publishers will agree to publish it as long as you reveal that you are behind this book.” Terry said with a confident smile as he continued.

“But the thing is, even a medium-sized publisher like me publishes at least a thousand books per year, forget the giants who could even reach ten thousand per year if needed. You yourself can think about how much attention and publicity each book gets if so many books are published throughout the year. Only a handful of them can be mentioned and even in them, only a few become famous.”

At this point, Will already knew where Terry was going with his talk, but he was still waiting for him to finish his talk.

“I can guarantee that I will devote a lot of resources to publish the book and make it gain fame, especially on your behalf. With all the effort, I can put it in. As long as you allow us to publish your book, it will have a higher chance of making it a bestseller. While if you give it to another publisher, I'm not sure if it will receive the same attention as we give it, even when considering your own fame in the game.”

Terry finally finished talking and looked at Will with a confident smile as if to say that he had taken out all his cards.

“You promise a lot, what is the guarantee that whatever you promise here will really be implemented?”

will ask. He already knew Terry wasn't the type to plan something like this, still, he wanted to get confirmation.

“We can sign a contract based on all these points and you can reject it if you find something that does not suit your wishes.”

Terry said, with an understanding smile forming on his face as he guessed that the deal was done, they just needed to sign the contract.

"Now, let's talk about royalty" Will said, and Terry nodded. That is an important topic as this will be Will's main source of income from the book. The higher the percentage of royalties he earned, the more income he would earn.

“I won't beat around the bush. Since we both know what a normal royalty is, 20% should be a good call. I am only talking about the rights of the first book.”

terry said, and Will was surprised in his heart. 20% was actually more than he expected. But something suddenly popped into Will's mind.

Will said worriedly. The normal royalty rate for writers averages at most 8-12%. Of course, it was different for famous writers. Therefore, the 20% that Will offered was quite good.

"No. I don't include movies and merchandising rights, they will stay with the author. Of course, if you are willing to relinquish those rights, the royalties will increase. ”

said Terry. He is indeed an old performer, and has calculated that Will will not sell the film rights.

“Well, 20% would be a good call. But that's for your average writer. I've even told you, You can use my name for promotion and publicity. Let's make it 30% and we'll reach an agreement. ”

Will said, his eyes looking for Terry's expression. Terry knitted his brows slightly, but his smile remained.

“You know, most of the royalties will go to actual bookstores and sellers. Just so you know, this also includes royalties from e-books and trade paperback, not just hardcover.”

So, the talks continued and after some negotiations, the deal was decided with 25% royalties from everywhere, with no movie rights and such. As Terry leaves with the promise of completing a deal at their second meeting, Will is thrilled with the deal he made.

For Terry, this was an opportunity that could bring him close to the top publishers if he played his cards right, and hence, he promised Will a large portion of the total revenue.
