Short Stories Before Bed (Horror)
Nyi Roro Sarah (Sea Waiter)

In a small village hidden in the mountains, there lives a girl named Maya. The village was isolated from the outside world, surrounded by dense and dark forest. The people of the village live with a strong belief in the spirits and the subtle creatures that inhabit the forest. However, among all the horror stories they heard, there was one famous most frightening—tale about Nyi Roro Sarah.

Nyi Roro Sarah, the sea queen who possesses supernatural powers, is said to rule the destiny of the fishermen who go fishing in the open sea. Maya, a brave 16-year-old girl, is not shaken by the stories and decides to find out if they are all true. However, the village elders forbid him for fear that he would fall into the grasp of Nyi Roro Sarah.

But the spirit of adventure in Maya continues to burn. One dark night, he stole some equipment and put it in a simple bag. Maya takes a map given to her mother by her grandmother, as well as an old compass that has been passed from generation to generation.

With a thumping heart, Maya walks down the path that leads into the haunted forest. The forest surrounded him like a black giant ready to swallow everything that entered. A thick fog enveloped the sky, making it even harder to see where he should go.

Maya continues on her journey, following the clues provided by the map. After walking for several hours, he arrived at a hidden cave that was said to be a place of deliberation of the subtle creatures. His jaw was clenched when he saw two pairs of sparkling eyes like diamonds watching him from inside the cave.

Biting her lips, Maya gathered up her courage and entered the cave carefully. He brought his father's old flashlight which gave him a little light. But the deeper he went, the darker and colder it became. The flashlight only illuminated the space in front of him; another space was hidden in the darkness.

In her silence, Maya could hear a faint rumbling sound. From a distance, he felt that someone was calling his name. Her heart skipped a beat as she realized that the call was the voice of Nyi Roro Sarah herself. But Maya knows that this is a rare opportunity and she must catch up with the voice.

His flashlight dimmed as he crawled in the narrow passageway towards the sound. Instantly, the dark completely enveloped him. He was shocked when the flashlight died and he felt being sucked into the endless darkness.

"Welcome, Maya," Nyi Roro Sarah's voice echoed inside the room. "You have shown incredible courage by coming here. But, what are you looking for here?"

While gulping nervously, Maya explains that she wants to know if the story about Nyi Roro Sarah is true. He wanted to know if it was the spirit that really governed the destiny of the fishermen in his village.

With a smile, Nyi Roro Sarah nodded. "That's a noble wish, Maya. But your life is in grave danger if it remains in this underwater world. Therefore, I will return you to the human world. But remember that knowledge does not always bring peace.”

Maya instantly returns to the cave inside the hidden forest. He realized that what he was going through would be a secret that was hard to tell. He grasped the old map and compass tightly, feeling responsible for the knowledge he had acquired.

Ever since her adventure, Maya begins to listen respectfully to the stories that develop in the village. He realizes that life is full of mysteries, and though it is scary, it is that fear that makes it truly meaningful.
