The New Civilization of Witches

The New Civilization of Witches
Chapter 143: The Migrants

A sailing ship from Longsong Fortress was slowly anchored at the dock of Border Town.

After the alley board was lowered, the passengers, with all kinds of luggage on their backs, began to descend the bridge. Most of them had never set foot in this foreign land before, so they looked somewhat confused. The sailors behind urged them to hurry, making them feel very uncomfortable.

As the crowd began to jostle, a middle-aged woman accidentally slipped. He lost his balance and almost fell off the support pole. Fortunately, a younger woman immediately stepped forward and held onto her wrist, saving her from falling over.

“Thank you, thank you.” The middle-aged woman gave a huge thank you with one hand on her chest to calm herself down.

The younger woman, however, simply smiled and waved her hand, indicating that it was not bothersome.

Ferlin Eltek was waiting at the pier. He immediately recognized this nimble young lady. She was Irene, his beloved wife, the Flower of Tomorrow of Stronghold Theater. She was wearing a white dress, and her long hair was tied above her head, making her as beautiful and graceful as before.

Although the First Knight's heart was pounding with excitement, he waited until he landed safely on the dock. Then he immediately rushed forward to hug her tightly, regardless of the looks and shouts of the people around them. She was struck by an unexpected hug, but once she recognized Ferlin, she responded to his embrace gently.

“I was so scared to hear Duke being defeated. When you were in Longsong Stronghold, I never got a chance to see you,” he whispered into his ear, “Luckily, you are safe now.”

“I was imprisoned in the basement of the lord's castle. The guards will not let you in,” Ferlin let go of his wife and said, “how have you been for the past two weeks?”

He was silent for a while and then told him, “I left the theater.”

Ferlin immediately understood what was unspoken. When he was still the First Knight of the Western Region, only the duke dared to disturb him. But when she became His Majesty's captive, those who craved her beauty no longer hid their desires. They were waiting for an opportunity to have it. If he continued to go to the theater for work, it would be a suicide attempt.

“It's okay. I got a job here, and the salary is good.” He's convincing. “Come home first.”

“Home?” Irene surprised. “We don't have to live separately?”

In general, inmates who are not redeemed or put to death, will work as poor laborers. They should stay in tents or barracks full of prisoners. They must sleep on the ground covered with wheat straw. The families of the inmates will be treated similarly. The women had to live in other barracks and also sleep on the ground. As the inmates worked, the women had to tidy up the men's barracks, prepare food, and wash clothes.

Thinking of that, Ferlin felt touched by his wife's choice. If he lived on the farm of Longsong Fortress, at least he had his own spacious room with a comfortable and soft bed. Yet he still chose to come to Border Town alone, just for her. Although she thought she should stay with another woman in a restroom or tent and be forced to work, she did not hesitate.

“I'm a teacher now.” He took Irene's suitcase and held her hand, heading towards the New Civilization District. “As a teacher, I got my own apartment for free.”

To be honest, when he first heard of the treatment of the teachers from His Majesty, he did not expect much. As an inmate, having your own room would be a lot of fun. Even though it was a wooden hut with a leaky roof and broken windows, it would be a good shelter once he tried to fix it. He never thought that the house for the teacher turned out to be so.

Entering the new district, the streets became wider, and the ground was covered in gray gravel. The streets have been flattened by masons making them comfortable to walk through. At first, Ferlin did not understand why the masons would bother to waste time and energy. Then he saw how swift the rainwater was running along the gravel, sinking into the ground and then into the deep drains on both sides of the road. Compared to the narrow alleys in Longsong Stronghold, which are often muddy and covered in puddles on rainy days, these streets are clearly much better.

Irene looked around and asked confusedly, “These houses seem to have just been built. Are we on the wrong way?”

After they passed two more corners, Ferlin Eltek stopped in front of a two-story brick house, and said to Irene, “We are here.”

“Where?” He looked around and then turned to the new house in front of him. He closed his mouth in surprise. “Is this whole house our new home?”

“Of course not.” She smiles. “This is Teacher's House, and we live in an apartment in the middle of the second floor. Come to the top.”

He opened the door with a key from his pocket, and led his hand to the new house. There is a living room, two bedrooms, and two additional rooms, and it is well decorated with furniture. It wasn't big, but it was comfortable. From the living room decor to the bedroom layout, everything is refreshing. Now with Irene, the hostess, it became even more perfect.

“Yes geez. Are you really taken as a prisoner here?” Irene ran from one room to another excitedly, meticulously looking at everything. He was excited like a child. “We'll really stay here, right?”

“Ya of course.” Ferlin, with a satisfied smile on his face, took the bread and cheese from the cupboard and placed it on the table. “I don't think you ate anything on the ship. Come on, let's eat something. I have to go to work later.”

“Ya, you are a teacher now.” Irene ran back to her husband. “Which noble family son will you teach?”

“Not the nobles. Subject Your Excellency.”

“Subject?” Irene was confused for a moment, and then asked, “What did you teach them?”

Ferlin took out a book from the table and handed it to him. “I teach them how to read and write. Your Majesty gave me ... ‘textbook this’.”

When he chose to become a teacher, he was afraid that he was not competent enough to do so. After all, teachers were usually well-rounded and white-haired teachers. But His Majesty said he only needed to teach according to the textbook. When he read the so-called “” textbook, he learned that there are many details and methods in teaching others to read and write.

Everything is contained in it, from the teaching method to its contents. On the first page, there is a list of dozens of questions and answers for new teachers. For example, the questions of how to be a superior teacher, how to motivate students to learn or how to test students, and the answers are clear and easy to understand, but still provide a lot of inspiration for readers. Even before he started his first course, he was already very interested in this book.

So did Irene, obviously. He has lived in the theater since his childhood and has read more books and scripts than Ferlin. She had once thought, with her beauty and wisdom, if she was born in a noble family, she would become a respectable woman known to the entire Western Region.

After reading a few pages, Irene suddenly lifted her head and asked, “What did you say .. teacher salary is not bad?”

“20 silver royals per month, with an increase of five every year.”

“There is no theater here, right?”

“Not ... no.” Ferlin hesitated, as he had already guessed what his wife was thinking.

Sure enough, he closed the book and smiled. “Then I will also be a teacher, baby. Same as you.”
