"I gave up" Kei said. He let me go and looked at me. "I will accompany you, but you must promise, not to act alone. Let me lead." Naming me makes him relieved. Slowly, Kei turned the doorknob and pulled it. After poking his head outside, he stuck his hand out backwards.
I grabbed Kei's hand and followed him. We passed through a dark and narrow passageway equipped with Yakuza corpses on its wooden floor. Blood everywhere. The smell of water stings my nose. "You don't have a gun? Maybe you can use it to shoot somebody" I whispered.
"Of course I have, but I won't use it now" Kei replied.
"You know where Makoto-neesan and Tora-san are?"
"We'll find them. Just relax."
It's quiet in here. In fact, it's too quiet for a Yakuza base. There was no way Hanazawa-gumi who had so many members was suddenly silent. "I think it's weird" I said as we passed a park at the back of the base.
"What's so weird?"
"Has all the clan members died?"
"We're ready to die for the clan, Tomomi-chan. Uh! You hear that?" Kei asked me to put my ears on.
I try to focus my ears on the sounds around me. Other than the sound of the wind, it was indeed vague as if someone was talking. "Who is that?" my many.
"Let's find the source."
Kei led the step into another, more stuffy and dark passageway.
The voice was getting clearer. "You guys are so slow!" snaps a man from inside the room to our left.
"Kumicho?" I whispered to Kei.
"Wait here! I'm going in. If anything happens, run as far away as possible!" kei's orders.
"But, Kei-san, maybe Tora-san is inside."
Kei shakes. "You can find your own way out. Leave this to me," he said steadily, then showed me my bracelet again. "Trust me. I'm on your side."
There's no way I'm following Kei's orders. I nodded, but that doesn't mean I agree. If he comes in, what do I do? I'm tired of waiting again.
Kei's knock stopped the conversation going on inside. The man opened the door. "Excuse me, Kumicho" he said.
I hurriedly pressed my earlobe against the door leaf.
"Key, check this out. Even arresting a woman is not possible" Kumicho said. "Tora, where's your girl?"
"I don't know" replied Tora.
Kumicho sighed. "Maybe you're the one who can make him confess. Do whatever it takes to get him to talk, Kei!"
My heart was pounding like it was being hit by a hard object. Kei said he didn't care about Tora. It was not impossible that Kei would hurt him.
"I know you're best friends, but you've been sworn to protect Hanazawa-gumi's good name. All traitors must be exterminated. You see how many victims fall just because of that traitor."
"I have something for you, Kumicho. Will you wait a minute?" ask Kei politely.
"Show me."
For a few seconds I heard nothing. However, my body staggered forward as the door opened. I saw Kei holding the doorknob while blinking one eye at me.
Could this be one of Kei's plans?
"Tomomi!" exclaimed Tora who was being held by a gun by a Yakuza in the middle of the room.
Kumicho clapped his hands, then walked up to me. "Good work, Kei," he said. His low voice seemed to be able to swallow the people who heard it. Kumicho's performance is still as neat as when he first met at a temple, in Hokkaido. Grey suit and tie. However, his friendly expression this time seemed to disappear and be replaced by a flat facial water.
In the room, there is a work desk, complete with a large Kumicho chair. Kumicho workspace is wider than my classroom. On the left is a sofa and a coffee table. It was definitely used to chat with business relations. On the right, stood a large cupboard filled with books and paper. A fireplace was next to the closet. Large windows are installed on the wall facing outside. Maybe the glass is bulletproof.
I can't stand to count their numbers. There were 6 Kumicho, Kei, Tora, and Kumicho bodyguards themselves. There is no Makoto here.
"Ayase Tomomi," Kumicho said my name while slowly pacing back and forth. "You let me down, very disappointing," he shook his head.
"Let go Tomomi. Just kill me!" exclaim Tora.
"No. I don't want you to die" I said.
Kumicho laughs. "Just calm. You can die together if that's what you want" he said lightly. "But there's something I don't understand here," the man stood in front of Tora. His body was certainly not as big as Tora's, but the look in his eyes was more deadly. "You dare come alone to my room. Where is Makoto?" tanyakanya.
"I don't know" replied Tora.
"Hmmm... It seems you don't want to talk. All right then. What if this is?" Kumicho hinted at something to Kei.
Soon Kei stepped next to me, pulled out a gun from behind his jacket, and pointed it at my head.
"I don't like to use this way to get someone to confess, but if that's what you want..." Kumicho narrowed his eyes.
"Don't!" exclaim Tora.
My breath stopped when Kei pulled the trigger. My heart is beating so fast. I was unable to make any sound, nor did I dare to look at Kei. My whole body is shaking. My sweat is sliding.
My entire memory appeared like a row of pictures before my eyes. My parents' divorce, my father's death, my mother's departure, my friends in Hokkaido, my move to Tokyo, the meeting with Tora and Misaki, Kei's kindness, Makoto's weirdness, Makoto's weirdness, until the second I was in the Yakuza's hands and they were ready to squeeze me at any moment.
"Kumicho, please, let him go!" Tora took a step forward, making all of Kumicho's bodyguards simultaneously pull out their pistols and point them at Tora. "I really don't know where Makoto is. Kumicho... Kei! You like Tomomi, don't you? Please, don't shoot!"
Kumicho, whom I initially respected, will now be the cause of my death. Ah, naw. I was the one who caused my own death by playing with fire. Kumicho didn't just arrest and kill me. He only obeyed the rules of the clan. I was involved in it myself. Worse yet, I am an outsider. To Hanazawa-gumi, I was a parasite that gnawed away part of the clan's body and would expand if left unchecked. The Yakuza won't let go of the hunt anywhere.
I waited for a few seconds, but Kei didn't shoot me. I don't like this. Delaying death is an incredible torture. It's better if Kei shoots me right now or not. Tora said Kei likes me but I don't care about it. And I'm sure Kei didn't think about it either because if it was true, he couldn't possibly continue to lie to me. "Just do it, Kei-san," I said as I closed my eyes.
"I'm sorry, I can't do it" Kei said.
BRACKET!
Someone broke down the door of the room. After that, a lot of people came in. They all had a gun in their hands and started pointing it at Kumicho and his bodyguards. This room became narrow because they were even larger than the Kumicho guards.
"Makoto Aya." said Kumicho.
A moment later, Makoto appeared. The woman walked in with confidence. His black boots immediately caught my attention. "You don't have to bother looking for me because I'm already here" he said. A wide smile adorned his face. "You'd better give up."
Some of Kumicho's bodyguards diverted their muzzles to Makoto. They were confused as to who they should shoot. Obviously they lost, but they still had to protect Kumicho.
"I don't know what your purpose is to do all this. If you want treasure, I can give it to you. But if you want to take over my position as leader of Hanazawa-gumi, it won't happen" Kumicho said calmly. "Ah... Do you want to help Ayase Tomomi?"
Makoto. "Your mind is too narrow, Your Highness Hanazawa Tatsuya. You can't be a good leader if you keep going. Indeed, Hanazawa-gumi has been going for decades, but it has not developed at all. Your criminal acts are getting smelled by the police. Plus, you guys are troubled just because of a little girl. You idiot!" He's snapped.
"It's the leader's seat you want. Humans are unsatisfied creatures. When I thought you were my most proud confidant, it turned out that you were helping this traitor," Kumicho pointed to Tora. "I am the one who raised you. I'm a father to you!"
"I did it on the grounds that have haunted me during my 10 years of service as a Yakuza! I deliberately joined Hanazawa-gumi and gained your trust. Of course you remember when I, who was 14 years old, came here alone. Now you must be wondering, why would a girl of that age know the location of Hanazawa-gumi headquarters," Makoto laughed. No one responded to Makoto's words, so the woman continued. "You're careless to accept me right away without checking my family's background. You don't know how my life has been. In fact, you were fooled by the fake name I used."
"Then, what is your real purpose?" ask Kumicho.
"You! You killed my brother!" Makoto finally pulled out a gun and pointed it at Kumicho's nose. Both of his eyes looked intently at the gray man in front of him. "You see? This weapon of your hand will be your master's feeding weapon" Makoto grinned.
"Hmmm... It's easy to talk like that, Makoto."
"My name is not Makoto! My family name is Kiritani. My name is Kiritani Aya. And my brother's name is Kiritani Miya. Remember something, Kumicho?" Makoto raised her eyebrows.
Instantly, Kumicho's facial water turned pale. Both of his eyes were wide. "Miya-chan's chat... Got a sister?" tanyakanya.
No one knows a person's background until they admit it themselves. I think I trust Makoto's story, or Kiritani's, this time. He does not want Kumicho's position, but rather takes revenge for his brother's death. Ten years ago, she was only 14. What can a Junior High child do when faced with a terrible event like this? She loved her sister as much as Tora loved her sister.
"My goal of joining Hanazawa-gumi was for this. I'm waiting for the right moment to kill you, Kumicho! It was a coincidence that Tomomi showed up and made this mess. My movements can be distracted. I have wiped out all your confidants and made most of the clan members my backers. They're all waiting for your obituary!"
It's not Kumicho's fault. Kiritani Miya herself has chosen to remain with her husband, so is unwilling to return to her family. I remembered Aunt Koharu who was willing to leave her family for her lover. We were worried while expecting her back, but we understood her life choices. I would probably do the same if I were Tora's wife. After all, a wife should go with her husband. I'll go wherever Tora goes.
Kei's shoulder shook. He laughed so hard. "Then you support him?" ask her to Tora. "It's funny because he killed your sister."
Now Tora is looking like a ghost. "So that's right? The makoto? You did it?" Tora is devastated by Misaki's death and he must accept the fact that the one who killed Misaki was his own friend. "You know he's my brother, right?"
"Don't eat her words, Tora!" sergeant Makoto without answering Tora.
"Not to confess?" Kei didn't stay away from me but without me realizing he had dropped his gun off my head.
"Shut up, Kei!"
"Aren't you and your brother the same? You both love a Yakuza."
"I told you, shut up!" shout Makoto.
"I think you're wasting your life here, Kiritani Aya. You only think about revenge until you have to be a Yakuza and wait for years. You love Tora-kun, but you hurt him. Everyone in this room knows that you poisoned Misaki. It's too bad his fate. In fact, she was happy to see her brother again."
"I'm not you who can do anything you want! You joined this clan because you have no job. You're unemployed. Kumicho told you to be a host and you wanted to. Such despicable work is only done by despicable people like you!"
"Don't insult me because you don't know what I'm doing!" protest Kei who really likes his job. "Seeing others smile happily makes me happy. It's time you stopped thinking about the past. For 10 years you've still wished your brother was alive. He's already dead. And I'm sure your brother doesn't want you to suffer like this."
Makoto turned her gun on Kei.
"Makoto, calm yourself!" yakuza chanted Makoto's men. "Focus on your goal!"
Confusion hit Makoto. His eyes are wild. "All of that is true! Blame it on me! I'm guilty of all this! I let my only brother marry a Yakuza leader because I thought he would be happy. I also killed Misaki because I thought, that way, Tora would support me for thinking it was Kumicho's order. You know what, Tora? I took the initiative to do it myself!" Makoto laughs. "I also used the information about Tomomi's move to your house by spreading it around Tomomi's school for her to come to Kei. It was there that Goro waited to eliminate him. But what's the outcome? This guy is blocking my intentions!" he said as he looked at Kei full of anger. "You deserve to die, Kei!"
"Macoto! Don't you do that!" prevent Tora from jumping in front of Kei to protect her best friend.
"Tora-san!" myrag. I don't want Tora shot, nor do I want Kei shot. I don't want anyone to die in this room.
Makoto's forehead wrinkled. His mind must have been out of control, so he had forgotten his ultimate goal. "Surge, Tora!" his yell.
"No," said Tora. "I believe you won't shoot."
"I love you, Tora. Please, move. Let me kill him!"
If left unchecked, Makoto will shoot Tora and Kei. I don't know what to do. I'm sure Makoto won't be satisfied just by killing me. He doesn't care about me. To him, I'm just a pawn that can be used to smooth out his mission. But rather than nothing. "Just shoot me, Makoto-neesan," I said, slipping in front of Tora, so Makoto's gun muzzle almost stuck to my forehead.
"What are you doing, Tomomi?" tora asked while gripping my shoulder, trying to shift me to the side, but I refused.
Makoto grunts. His expression signified his astonishment at the three of us. "You guys scrambling for my gun bullets? Should I have a race? That's grand... You're willing to die for them?" askinya. His eyeballs pierced my eyes.
I'm nodding. "I don't want anyone to die in front of me. If my life can be exchanged for them, then I will be very happy," I said.
"Don't listen to him, Makoto!" exclaimed Kei who stepped quickly to my side and pointed Makoto's gun himself at his heart. The man looked at me. "You can't die" he whispered.
Kei's attitude made me cry. I never understood him, but I didn't want him to die. I don't want Tora to die either. The one who should die is me for causing all this to happen.
Makoto laughed cynically. "You guys really make me sick!" his yell.
Kumicho. "That's it," he said slowly. A deep sadness appeared on his face. He must have lost his wife too, just like Makoto missed his brother. Moreover, he did not get to be with his wife at the last moment. I was able to capture the regret in his words as we chatted in Hokkaido. In a way, Kumicho is a leader of the Yakuza clan, Hanazawa-gumi. On the other hand, she is Hanazawa Tatsuya who has a love for Kiritani Miya.
"For you, my brother died alone, my family was a mess, my life was full of darkness! And you're still calm like that! You'd better all die!" Makoto laughed shrillly.
"You've gone mad, Makoto," Kei shook his head.
Kumicho stepped slowly behind his desk. The white-haired man opened the drawer.
"Do you want what?" makoto asked who then turned the gun to Kumicho.
"If that's what you want... So be it," Kumicho took a small pistol from his drawer and pointed it at his own temple.
"Kumicho!" yakuza exclaims Kumicho guards. "Don't!"
"May we meet again in the future."
DOR'S!
Silent.
All of this is like a movie with a director and seasoned cast, how they make me feel the truth. But as soon as I blinked, it turned out to be a reality.
Kumicho's body just fell down next to the table. The hole in his temple was spitting out fresh blood. Instantly, my gaze darkened as Tora closed my eyes with her hands. Free. I've seen it.
Kumicho died as Hanazawa Tatsuya.
"Why... Wh why? Why!" Makoto. Perhaps the woman was sorry that she did not kill Kumicho or that she did not expect Kumicho to love her brother so much that he committed suicide. I don't know.
No one dared to move, but no longer held guns at each other.
The leader of Hanazawa-gumi is gone. The members no longer have the figure of a wise father capable of leading them. However, I can't stop thinking about the reason Kumicho killed himself. Kumicho is not a bad guy. He did commit a criminal act, but he had a warm heart. I think there's something that should be left without an answer.
Kei knelt in front of Kumicho's body without speaking a word. After a few minutes in silence, he turned to Kumicho's still-open desk drawer, where Kumicho picked up the gun. Kei took out a picture frame from there. He saw that photo. "With this, Hanazawa-gumi was officially disbanded," he said. He walked up to Makoto and gave the photo to her.
Makoto's cry became more and more because of seeing the photo. He fell to his knees, beginning to roar like a madman.
Kei left us who still did not know what to do.
Makoto slammed the photo until the glass broke into pieces, but it fell not far from my feet, so I could peek at it. Two people, an old man and a teenage girl, were smiling. Their faces depicted a radiance of happiness. At the bottom is the handwriting of "Tatsuya-san and Miya-chan. Our Memories".
"Tomomi, let's go home" Tora asked.
I'm nodding.
Shortly after Tora and I were outside Kumicho's study, there was a gunshot that made me jump on my shoulder. "Who is.." I asked without finishing my sentence.
"Makoto fulfilled his promise" Tora replied.
"What promise?"
"He swore he would end his own life if the person he was looking for died. I didn't expect the person in question to be Kumicho."
I took a breath and exhaled it. Pull it and blow it again. Pull, throw, pull, throw. My cry exploded in Tora's arms. Instantly, I felt very tired. I want to sleep.
