Finally, after more than an hour of travel I arrived at school.
"Sister, I'm going in first" I said.
"Danny, today I can't pick you up. I have overtime. Can you go home by yourself?"
"certain."
"Yes, you go in there! Get scolded by your teacher! I'm leaving, yeah!" saith.
I just nodded.
He slid away.
My watch shows at 07:16. I'm 16 minutes late. Immediately I entered the gate that the school guard was about to lock. Run to my class before the lesson starts.
"Eni Karta!"
"Get up, Mom!"
"Fluorescene Tungsten!"
"Yes. I'm present, Mom!"
Bu Reini is passing on the students. I will definitely be scolded for my delay. Bu Reini is the most disciplined and fierce math teacher. Just last week my classmate Gyshell was sun dried in the ceremonial hall because it was only 10 minutes late.
"Excuse me, Mum. Sorry I'm late" I said subtly.
Shame is upon me. This time I was late. It's because I had that weird dream.
"Oh! Danny, come on in!" pinta Bu Reini's.
His voice was as soft as silk. That was originally, soon the tiger would definitely come out of the cage.
With alarm I stepped towards the antagonist. Directly down in front of the face that was ready to pounce on me roundly.
For a few seconds the teacher did not say a word to me. Even though I didn't see him, I knew that right now his eyes were staring intently at me.
A sudden class at the grave.
"Explain why!" his orders finally said.
His tone still sounded smooth but with a threatening-looking smile.
"I ... I mean, uh I mean .. bad luck .. wake up, Mom," I said in a speech as slow as possible.
Shame mixed in fear makes me misbehave. That classic reason would definitely be rejected outright by him.
My whole eye looks at me.
Back silence.
Ms. Reini approached her desk and sat in her chair stiffly. This is the worrying part. I'd rather be slapped and drowned out than silenced. When this is the case I will definitely not be considered as his disciple anymore.
"Danny ...," he said. "You know, Mother is the one who upholds discipline. I don't like it when a student is late for your lesson!" coined. The tone was a little high, accentuated intentionally.
"Yes, Mom. I'm sorry ...."
"Usually I don't tolerate anyone because of this delay. But for you, because you've been following Mom's lessons so well, and because you're the smartest student here. This time I won't punish you."
The anxiety evaporated instantly. The heartbeat that had been hunting had gradually receded.
"Thank you, Mom."
"But remember, Danny! Next time you're late again, don't go to Mom's lessons!" said. "Oh yes, before you sit down, please miss your friends some more!"
"Good, Mom."
I took that list of absences off his desk. Start mentioning the names of the children on the list.
"Gyshell Gylenhill ... John Brown ... Nori Nora ...."
While I was passing them off, I thought I saw something behind the class. It looked like a black shadow on the wall. At first I thought maybe it was the shadow of one of them. But over time the shadow looked strange. It is like a transparent object. Even if it was a shadow caused by a fluorescent lamp attached to the classroom ceiling, it would be impossible for the shadow to appear this real in my eyes. I try not to ignore it.
After I finished serving, I sat on my bench. At first glance I glanced back at the shadow figure earlier. The shadow has vanished.
For three hours, we learned the dull Math until finally the break time arrived.
"Danny, we're going to the cafeteria, yuk!" bring Nora.
"certain. Go Flo!" take me to the Fluorescene that I call Flo a lot because her weird name is too long to mention.
Nora and Flo were my first friends when I was in X class at this school. Wherever we go, we are always three.
SMA CA is of International Standard. No wonder why half of the students who enter every year are foreigners or descendants of crossbreeds with colorful hair and eyes. Therefore, here I feel not a strange person because it has blue eyes as a person of original Indo descent. Everyone thinks I'm an immigrant from the middle of nowhere.
"Dane, what do you want? Let me order it!" ask Nora.
"Es tea only."
"If you were, Flo?" tanyakanya.
"As far as you go."
"Okay, wait here for a minute."
The tomboy girl headed to the crowd of starving people. Queue to take her order food. While we sat in a corner chair near the mango tree.
Again, I saw it.
That shadow.
This time it looked like a black cloth was floating about.
The figure peeked out from behind the classroom glass in front of me. I looked carefully at the shadow. Hope that's my hallucination. I rubbed my eyes but the shadow did not go away. Stay standing there like a statue or maybe clothes hanging.
"Did you see it?" I asked Flo with my eyes fixed on the shadow.
"See what?" the question is looking at my face.
I looked at this bespectacled man beside me.
"That damn thing!" point me at the class window.
The shadow was lost to the air.
"I didn't see anything. What did you see?"
"Hey, guys! Here goes!" sergeant Nora.
"Yes. Thank you, Nor."
"Hey, look at that triumvirate! Drinking under the mango tree. The romance!" shen Levek to everyone.
"Damn him!" muttered Nora annoyed.
"Leave it, Nor. Don't tarnish. It would only make itself even more above the wind. We better get out of here!" saran Flo's.
We were about to leave but the blond-haired Indo-American guy was holding me back. Clasping my wrist so tightly. Our body height is.
He whispered something in my ear.
"It's a shame, a Danny Rhamdan, the most proud of all teachers to have to hang out with people like them. You should be hanging out with your own race."
"Listen Alvaconi, at least I'm no more shameful than a person who feels himself handsome and wants to get more attention from everyone by humiliating others" I whispered sarcastically.
I pulled my arm out of his grip.
Leave it.
Back to Nora and Flo waiting.
"What did you tell him?" ask Nora.
I'm silent. Just smiling in satisfaction as he turned to Shen's visibly annoyed face.
The bell rang, we all rushed into the classroom.
"Kids go to page 37!" said Mr. Randie, our literature teacher. "Danny, please read in front!" her door.
By force, inevitably I have to read the slightly boring textbook.
"A. Cerpen. A short story of less than ten thousand words that gives the dominant single impression and focuses on one character in one situation ..."
While I was reading the Indo package book, a shadow covered the book. The lamp above my head was blocked by something so I couldn't clearly read it.
When I looked up, again the black shadow appeared. This time it looked real and not transparent. He was like a human being wrapped in ragged black clothes. His head was covered in a black hood so I could not clearly see the creature. But the gaze from those blue eyes, made me suddenly limp.
"Danny ...," whispered a voice out of nowhere.
Like the wind that blows near the ears.
I'm sure that voice came from there. Surprised, I collapsed on the floor. I close my eyes and cover them with my palm.
I don't care if they laugh at me. I'm so scared—fear it's so weird. It was so fierce that there was a murderous figure standing right beside me.
I looked up. The creature was still perched there like a clothesline tied to the neon sign.
Can't they see it?
"Danny, what's wrong with you?" ask Mr. Randie.
I blinked my eyes many times. The figure disappeared again. It's like a game of hide and seek. He showed up when I wasn't looking for him. But, when I wanted him to bring himself up so I could show them what I saw, he hid instead. Waiting until I don't ignore it anymore.
"N-no, Sir. I'm fine" I stammered as I stood up. Without me noticing my eyes were red. "Excuse me, sir, I have permission to go to the toilet," I immediately exited the classroom intending to wash my face.
A step from the classroom door I remembered something. I paused and went back to class.
"Sorry, sir, I'm not so."
I sat on my bench. So scared that I was alone in the toilet, the creature showed itself again.
I don't care if they all look at me weird. I immediately hid my reddish face into both palms of my hands until the lesson ended.
"Dane, what exactly happened to you?" ask Nora wonder.
"Hey, Rhamdan! Embarrassing. You're crying like a baby!" sosor Shen from behind flashed before me. Groped my shoulders violently.
I looked at him sharply but could not make up his words.
"Nora ..., "I said slowly.
"Yes?" her eyes are curious. Waiting for me to say something.
"I'm fine. I'm doing fine. Don't worry about me" I said.
I don't want to tell them that first. I thought maybe this was all just a hallucination. Just imagination. But, if once again I see that black figure, then.
"You sure?"
"Of course."
"Dane, didn't your cousin pick you up today?" ask Nora.
"No. He worked late till night."
The three of us were still waiting for the bus to appear when all the other children had gone home in private cars or been picked up by their parents' private driver.
Soon a silver-gray bus appeared. We hurried up into it before the other children. By taking the bus, it takes extra time to reach home.
"Dane, we go first, yeah!" said Flo.
"Don't think things through. It will only make your heart unsettled" Nora looked at me who seemed to be daydreaming about something. Then they both got off the bus.
The weather is very hot today. Maybe because it's summer. The bus I was riding was getting crowded by passengers. I had to share the oxygen that was supposed to be for one person but was inhaled by five people at once. Coupled with the babbling of other children along the way that made my head dizzy.
My house is about three kilos away. My legs are no longer strong to support my body which has continued to stand. I feel so weak today. It was only my arm that I relied on to hang my body on a piece of iron pipe that ran across the middle of the bus.
"Please get ready for passengers who wish to disembark at Jalan Prakhala!" sahut bus driver.
I finally got off the bus. The distance between the house and the bus stop is still far away. Hundreds of meters I had to travel with my legs starting to stiffen.
The sky is so red by the twilight shade. The atmosphere of housing in my home area is so dead. The magnificent houses on the outskirts of the main street looked like a dead city.
Silent.
And it makes me uncomfortable.
Every foot I walk like someone is following me.
Every eye I looked at was like someone was staring back at me.
My life started to go on.
I still believe that it's my hallucination because all the way home, I no longer see it.
Every hidden corner I look at.
Every mysterious corner I approach without hesitation.
Still, I didn't see it.
But ...
I felt like he was close to me, even if it was just a feeling.
