The light of the morning sun shone on the village.
The little birds were talking to each other.
Summer insects buzzing from the branches of trees.
It feels so warm.
So reconciling the soul.
"Shanty, I want to go home" I said.
"When are you back, Dane?" tanyakanya.
"I hope soon."
We looked at each other. Looks awkward and hesitant to hug. Not like the others.
"Then, I'll see you, Shan," I said before we got it wrong.
Before my parents and I left Nekala village, I looked at him from a distance. He waved to me.
My parents and I sat in the dining room. Without many words, we ate the food on the table.
"Danny ...," said Mother slowly trying to melt the atmosphere.
I'm staring. I saw Mom staring at Dad and Dad nodding at her.
"Here," he said, giving her a carved brown wooden box.
"What's this?" my many.
"just open. It was an item that was given to us when we adopted you from the orphanage. It's the legacy of your biological parents" said Mother.
I stroked the top of the box. There's a "Bo I Hora" in the middle of the box. In the upper right corner there is an engraving that when viewed carefully like the letter JN.
After dinner, I went back to my room. I sat down at my study table and opened the wooden box. There was a watch, a necklace, two pieces of identity cards, and a piece of paper. Like letters.
I observed the letter. It has a letter but I don't know what's written in it. The language written there is not the language of any country I know and every letter is strange. Slew. Then I saw the identity card.
Men and women identity cards. The woman named Joanna Van Dehr Bosche and the man named Nikkiemura Maseru Zenko. The name is obviously Dutch and Japanese. Now I don't wonder why my face is Japanese-Dutch.
I looked carefully at the necklace and watch in the box.
At first glance, the pendant hanging on the gold necklace chain was shaped like a sword, but if you look at it in more detail, it looks like the letter JN.
The watch itself is made of gold and platinum which around it is filled with gems. At the bottom of the watch, there is the location and year of manufacture. Switzerland, 1969. On the inside of the glass the clock is engraved with the letter JN which is so beautiful.
JN, my father's initials and my real mother's. Joanna-Nikkiemura's chat.
***.
"Danny ...," the voice whispered in my ear.
The voice of a girl.
"What's? Who're you?" my many.
I can't see it. This place is dimly lit.
"It's time, Danny! Let's go!"
"depart? Go where? What's for?"
"Of course against them, my hero!"
"Huh? Her hero?"
Before he could answer, I woke up from a dream.
This morning Ian took me for a walk.
From the road we've been on, it looks like he's going to Albian. This road is what is usually passed when I go to school and Ian goes to work.
Cerenity Albian High School has passed. Shortly thereafter he turned his motorcycle towards the housing.
KIE.
The sign hung at the front gate of the housing entrance.
Ian parked his bike in the yard of one of the houses.
"Whose house is this?" my many.
"Contrakanku. Come on in," he said as he turned the key and opened the door.
This house is not too big. There is only a depab room, two bedrooms, a kitchen that blends with the dining room, and a bathroom.
"Sit down" he said.
I don't understand why Ian brought me here.
"It looks like I can't take you to school anymore, Dane. Yesterday my boss scolded me for being late for work. He told me to stay in this house so I wouldn't be late anymore."
"It's because of me. Sorry," I said sorry.
"That's not the problem. I feel good about being moved here. But you how? I have an idea. What if you just stay here with me? After all, the distance from my school and work is very close. So I can take you to school before you go to work, '" he suggested. "What do you think?"
"I .. I don't know. I'll think about it later. A lot of things are bothering me right now" I said.
Ian sat closer. Ready to listen to my heart as usual.
"This .. is the stuff my real parents left behind" I said showing the watch I was wearing.
"I've been an adopted child for a long time."
I looked at his face. The sense of wonder was clearly there. But he didn't ask. Maybe I don't want to add to the burden of my mind. For a few seconds we did not react.
"You're not going to work?" I melt the silence.
"My boss gave me one day to move my things into this house."
"I see you've brought nothing" I wonder.
"Later on. Like I'm on holiday, I want to take you for a walk. I told you, didn't I? Where do you want to go now? We're leaving," he took with a spirit.
"Actually .. if you don't mind I want to go back to that village. I'm still restless. I ... feel like this isn't all right."
"Then, come on!"
Her cheerful face, managed to make me a little relaxed. Always has. Trying to comfort me who looks sad. I don't want to smile.
We arrived at Nekala village. After parking his bike in front of the village office, we walked straight to Shanty's house. I saw people staring at me intensely.
What's up with them?
I knocked on Shanty's door.
Someone opened the door. "Oh! You are! What's up?" ask Shanty's grandmother.
"I still don't understand, Grandma."
"I knew you would come here. Tell me what's still bothering you."
"I asked for an answer. But I don't know what to ask. My head is full of all sorts of questions. I have not achieved the goal I wanted. I wish the creature wouldn't bother me anymore, but, even if he doesn't show himself to me again, he still annoys my thoughts. I don't know what to do to keep my life quiet."
The grandmother was silent for quite a while until she finally said, "Sandekala. Do you know what they are?"
"To my knowledge, they're the devil that kidnaps children every twilight when summer comes."
"Do you know how they can get out of their world and into ours?" ask again.
I just shook my head.
"Hundreds of years ago, a Chinese citizen came to this island. To this village. He allied himself with the demon and managed to create a portal that could connect our world. The human world with another world where the spirits live is called Keikai.
"His initial goal, he did it with good intentions. He just wants to meet his dead family. As time went on, many citizens came from outside to enter the portal and went to meet their dead relatives. But, without them noticing, they came home with a newcomer from Keikai. Sandechala.
"From year to year their numbers are increasing and live in the upper reaches of the river. Waiting for summer to kidnap the village children. There was even a time where there were no children at all in this village.
"To stop their growing numbers, I was with someone who had been my husband and went to close the portal 60 years ago. And from year to year, I fought with my friends to exterminate the Sandekalas who occupied the upper reaches of the river. There was a lot of bloodshed in the black forest. All my friends are dead. And I'm actually dead too. But my husband made a transaction. Make a deal with them. We who have been revived. But as a payment, they wanted my husband to worship them, to ally with the devil to spread their existence throughout Java Island and.
"What?!" my wonder. "Grandma gave it to them?"
"Of course not! There is not a single parent who is that willing to give his child to the devil!" sergeant.
"We renege on the covenant of our son and consequently our son is condemned. Some of his soul was bound to the soul of the devil. My son's hair turned red and his eyes turned blue" he said.
"So, my destiny is the same as your son's? But what did he do when he was my age?" my many.
"He fought that fate. He fought the Sandekalas. Fighting to destroy them all. Because he felt it was not his destiny. He can choose. Choose to fight to live as a warrior or die as a loser."
"Then what happened? Did he fight them alone? For years?"
"Of course not. Fighting them alone is suicide. Shentya gathered dozens of people who dared to exterminate the creatures. In addition to his goal of releasing his curse, he also wanted to save the village children from the hands of the Sandekalas.
"Year after year they fought to exterminate the creature. Continuing our generation year after year since their arrival into our world. At the age of twenty, his curse finally came off. His hair and eyes are back to normal. But that did not stop him from fighting to exterminate the Sandekalas until they were all completely wiped off the face of the earth.
"So you mean Grandma, Danny has to fight them?" asked Ian to make sure.
"Don't give up! Don't let them win, son!"
Suddenly Shanty came from outside.
"Eh! Dane, Ian, been here a long time?" tanyanya greeted us.
"Yes, long enough. Where are you from, Shan?" my many.
"Exercise behind the house!"
A drill?
Oh, I just remembered, he always practiced boxing on a banana tree trunk in the back of his house.
"Shan, sit. I want to talk" her grandmother ordered. "The time has come."
"What's up, Grandma?" ask Shanty plain.
"It's time for you to fight to defeat the Sandekalas" he replied. "Danny, their death and curse is not fate. You have a choice. It's time to fight them all!"
His words gave me a strong spirit. Reminds me that I can choose. But I still don't have enough courage. The shadow of the creature's face in my mind scares me often.
"And for you Shanty. Did I ever tell you that from generation to generation our families have always fought to exterminate them?" ask grandma.
Shanty.
"My mom, me, your grandfather, your mother, and your father have fought to defeat that thing. But our struggle is not enough. Their numbers are still many.
"I'm not going to force you. Don't take your family's habits as destiny. Because you can still choose, Shanty. I'm just asking you, are you willing to help Danny?"
Shanty.
I'm staring.
We looked at each other.
Ian sat sweetly staring himself.
I can't comment on anything. I didn't expect it to be complicated. Involving the people around me.
"Sure, Grandma," Shanty replied seriously.
I've never seen him like this. I saw a lot of courage in his eyes.
"Danny, I remind you. The people you invite should be the chosen ones, the brave ones, and the ones who have seen the creature. You can't invite just anyone to help you" said her grandmother.
"The chosen ones? Who?" my many.
"Your brothers."
"I mean all my brothers' grandmothers?" many ensure.
He's nodding.
"But they ...," my words came to a halt.
Ian clasped my hand.
Scroll her face.
He didn't look back. His eyes were on the grandmother. But I could see her eyes glazed over as if she was gesturing to me. And I know what he hinted at.
Trust me! I'll help you!
Maybe that's what he wanted to say.
"Okay" I said at last.
Ian let go of his hand.
"God, what do we have to destroy them with? We don't have any weapons."
"Grandfather Shanty will give you weapons" he replied.
"Grandfather? Grandma said Grandpa's dead?!" wonder Shanty.
"No. He's still alive."
From the outside of the house, there were people around. We who were curious came straight out of the house. We saw mothers gathered there leading three children.
Suddenly a mother knelt at my feet.
"Please, Son! Help us! Save our children! Protect our children from the creature! We beg you, son!"
Other citizens chimed in.
Saying the same thing.
Begged.
Weld.
They look restless.
They need help.
They need a hero.
"I beg you, stand up, Mom. Don't be like this" I said.
The woman finally stood up.
"You can see how many children there are in this village?"
The mother pointed at the three children behind her.
I saw the faces of the other people. They shed tears.
"Only three of them remain. All our other children have been kidnapped by the Sandekalas" he said. "Please help us! Destroy them!"
"We beg you, son!" exclaim them.
They were so expecting my help. I watched the three children with pity.
They're frightened.
Their other friends have been kidnapped by the creeks and the Sandekalas. And just wait for the time until their turn comes.
"Danny, do you know how Sandekala was created?" ask Shanty's grandmother.
I don't know. I didn't answer.
"Sandekala is not like other demons. They are not made of fire. They are created from the evil side of man, the sadness, fear, and suffering of children. The more children suffer, the more Sandekala is created to kidnap and turn children into their own. Kids need you. They all hope for you. Can you get rid of these kids' fears?"
I looked back at those faces. Fear, worry, suffering .. I can feel it all. It's like it's all swimming in my bloodstream.
"Grandma said Shanty's grandfather had a gun. Then where does he live?" my many.
It's like a big responsibility to me. But, I can't let the Sandekalas kidnap the village kids anymore.
In this case, I am faced with three problems;
First, about me with them. I can't give up. I have to fight to live. Save myself and release this curse from my body.
Second, about the kids with them. Children are like a bunch of corn seeds that are planted and grown. Continues and continues to grow until it finally dies due to age, season, and natural circumstances. They should not have been kidnapped by the Sandekalas and used as a tributary or one of them. I can't think about myself. I have to protect them and eliminate their fears.
Third, about my real parents with them. What is their relationship with the Sandekalas? And what reason would they give my soul? That answer I can only get from Sandekala herself.
And now there's no other way for me to achieve that goal than to do what I'm supposed to.
