On the green football field, the boys were playing ball. They are about 9 to 12 years old. The boys ran after the round skin and then raced to put the ball into the opponent's goal.
Amy sat on the sidelines. Watching the boys in the hot sun with still-wet eyes. His jumper had been slung over his shoulder. His hands were scuffed as a result of rubbing directly against the weeds in his house.
The girl thought it might be better if she stayed back at her house after High School. He can work as a shop clerk or take care of people's fields. He's quite a gardening expert.
After the ultimate plan fails miserably, thousands of ideas facing the future invade it. Amy is disappointed because she failed but that does not mean she can not live life anymore. He had lived one and a half of the most horrible years of his life. Living the days without her older brother.
If he could last for a year and a half, he could have lived it forever. Amy was ready for it, just she didn't want it. His time with M was too meaningful so he still hoped to be back with his brother.
"Sister, sorry .. can you get the ball here?“ shouted one of the boys who was playing ball.
"Yes?" Amy looked around and realized that there was a round object rolling slowly and then stopped right in front of her.
Amy picked up the ball and then was about to throw it hard.
"Sister, do you want to play with us? Our team is two people short."
"Eh?" Amy looked at the boy in clothes that had been filled with dust and stains. "Didn't you play six guys six?" said. Amy counted the number of children.
"No. We're only five. Two of our friends did not come" replied the sapodilla-skinned boy. "If we lose, we can't play here for another month."
"If I don't want to play, how?" ask Amy. Arrested hands to throw the ball that he had been holding.
"It's okay. We are not forcing. Besides, we have a backup plan." The boy snatched the ball from Amy's hand then ran straight to the middle of the field.
Backup plan? Plan B's?
Amy slumped herself in the grass. Stretched out his hand then he looked at the vast blue sky decorated with thin cloud fibers. He always felt the sensation of flying while doing so. It was as if his body was lifted from the ground then floated between the sky and the earth.
Suddenly Amy heard the sound of quick footsteps heading towards her. The kids again, he thought.
"You there?" The worried face looked at Amy with shortness of breath.
Amy glanced at him then looked back at the clear sky. The sun is shining right over the head. If it wasn't for her hat, Amy's eyes might have been on fire.
"We are looking for you in your house but there is no one" said the man who was none other than Jimmi.
There was no word from the girl. So Jimmi lies down next to Amy. He knew the girl was still angry with him.
"I'm sorry" Jimmi said. Amy looked at the sky. "I should have gone home last semester. Should—"
"It's okay. It's all over" Amy cut. His face was still straight looking at the smooth movement of the clouds in the air.
"You forgive me?“
Amy's face moved. He looked at Jimmi and was a little surprised to find that brown eyes were watching him. "Yes," he said after being able to master himself from the hypnotic eye. "I forgive you guys. You and M." Smile from Amy's dry lips.
A breeze blew on the hair of the two who were lying down, also in Jimmi's heart. For a long time she had not seen that smile on Amy's face. A smile that was even more dazzling than Jimmi remembered.
"Jimm ...."
"Yes?"
"Let's spend a lot of time together. As long as we can."
"Of course" said Jimmi with a big smile.
"I miss you."
"I'm more upset."
They exchanged smiles then both looked at the sky with fingers adrift.
*******
As Amy says, she and Jimmi spend more time together. The two boys even went to school together, took a break together and went home with Amy.
Jimmi and M will indeed do anything for Amy during their short vacation. Including escorting Amy back to school. They thought they could make up for their separate times.
"What did you really tell Amy?" tanya M once in the empty school cafeteria. The doorbell rang three hours ago. After touring school, M and Jimmi decide to go out for a meal.
"You mean?“ Jimmi frowned.
"Since you guys came home the other day from the field, Amy wasn't mad at us anymore. In fact, it seemed that he did not care about his failure. What have you told him?"
Jimmi seemed to remember the events of that day. Amy forgave him too easily. Not the usual Amy, but she's the Amy. Nothing happened after that. They're really fine.
"I'm just apologizing and .. and saying that I miss him more" Jimmi replied after thinking for a while.
"That's it?“ ask M again. His feeling was less calm. Maybe Amy really forgave them both. However, the reason for the girl was still unknown to him. He could not calm down before he knew the reason. Asking her directly to her sister was not a good idea. Amy won't tell him anything he doesn't want to tell.
"M, look at this!“ Jimmi showed me his smartphone screen.
"There are five colleges there. Amy can pick one of them."
"true." M's eyes sparkled reading the names of the colleges and their addresses. He and Jimmi have planned a plan B for Amy. That girl could go to college in the same town as them.
"But I wonder, does he still want to be a criminologist? All of these campuses do not have a criminology department" Jimmi said with the unrest he was trying to cover.
"You have to persuade him, Jimm. Let's just say that medical or law majors are equally interesting. I hope he's going to law school." M opened the canned drink and gulped it down.
"Why me? He listens more to you, doesn't he?“ Jimmi took back his phone and put it in his jacket pocket.
M did not answer. He was a little jealous of his friend. She felt that Amy loved Jimmi more than she did. I knew that one day this would happen. He should be willing to let go of his sister. At least, he was relieved if he had to let Amy off on Jimmi.
As the bell rang, many disciples approached the two companions. Especially the generation of Amy who used to be fans of both of them. Of the many students who came, Amy was nowhere to be seen.
"Zack!" Jimmi waved at Zack who was munching on the sandwich at the corner table.
With his mouth full and the rest of the sandwich in hand, Zack approached Jimmi. "You come every day?" ask the guy after sitting next to M.
"Where do you know Amy?" ask M while glancing left and right.
Zack swallowed the rest of the sandwich and said, "Oh, Wednesday he usually breaks in the porous."
"He's still learning?“ m asked Jimmi half-murmuring. She thought Amy would never study seriously again.
"Come, we're going there!“ bring Jimmi.
"You two can't get in. You guys, right, aren't Eagle High School students anymore."
"Ah, he's right too, Jimm." M who has stood back sits. "We're waiting for the school to disband."
"Why are you two so possessive of this to Amy? Wherever he goes it looks like you're following him." Zack drinks the rest of M's drink and burps. "He's grown up, M, Jimm. He's got a black belt. You don't have to worry about anything."
"You know he got a black belt?" I looked at Jimmi. The friend shook his head slowly with a surprised face. "It turns out we have missed a lot of things" murmured M.
The two friends were sitting in the canteen. Even until the school breaks up, M and Jimmi stay in the cafeteria until Lewis comes and tells Amy that she has come home. "He thinks you're home" Lewis said.
M and Jimmi go home soon to Larry's house. They found Amy sitting next to a couch in the front room with an open book in hand.
"Where are you from?" amy asked without taking her eyes off the pages of the book.
"We were from the cafeteria earlier," replied Jimmi. He immediately sat on the empty sofa beside Amy.
M did the same with Jimmi. He opened his jacket and placed it on the back of the sofa. "Am .. You know besides Scholar University, there are several other colleges in town X. We thought, it'd be better if you went to one of those colleges."
"There's a criminology major?“ Amy did not allow any views.
Jimmi turns to M who then nods his head as code.
"Am, I think a law major suits you" Jimmi said.
Amy stared hard at Jimmi then changed to look at M sharp. "Don't persuade me to enter the law!" amy said firmly.
Jimmi gulped with great difficulty. He knew that serious look. The look of a stubborn Amy. He opened his mouth again but Amy said, "Medicine is not!"
Jimmi and M closed their eyes and cursed inwardly. It seems Amy knows their plan.
"I'll be a criminologist. I'm going to Smart University."
M rounding the eyes. He knew that the university was in the city of Z, a city north of the city. This means that their distance will be further from now on. "What?"
"Am, are you serious?" ask Jimmi who also did not believe what Amy said just now.
"I've never been this serious. You said I should have a plan B, right? This is my plan B!" Amy closes the book and leaves just like that leaving M and Jimmi still shocked by her decision.
