Charles lay down exactly where Ellie left him, and looked like he was dead.
"Charles!" ellie shouted, lifting her skirt and running towards him. He stumbled over a stone and landed next to Charles, his knee piercing Charles' waist.
Charles groaning. Ellie breathed a sigh of relief, which she had not realized, been detained since. It was not that he thought Charles was really dead, but the problem was that the man did not move at all.
"Where does salt smell when you really need it most?" grouchy Ellie. Mrs. Foxglove always waved rotten barbau concoctions when it ran out of inciting ways.
"No, I don't have a vinaigrette" Ellie told the earl who was still lying unconscious. "Because no one had fainted before me before" He looked around, looking for something that could be used to resuscitate Charles when his eyes saw a small bottle of alcohol that must have fallen from a rolled-up train. Ellie picked up the bottle, unscrewed the lid, and sniffed the contents.
"Yes, my gosh," he said, shuffling the bottle and shaking his hands in front of his face. The smell of strong liquor filled the air. Ellie wondered if the liquor was the leftover from the drink Charles drank when he fell from the tree. Charles didn't drink today. Ellie was sure of that. If so, Ellie would have smelled Charles' liquor. After all, according to Ellie, Charles was not the kind of guy who used to drink liquor for everyday drinks.
Ellie looked down, looking at the man she thought she was going to marry. Even when unconscious, there was something strong within him. No, Charles didn't need booze to boost his confidence.
"Well," said Ellie out loud. "I think we can use it to wake you up." Ellie poked the small bottle right under Charles' nose.
There was no reaction.
Ellie frowned and placed her hand on Charles' chest. "My Lord, you haven't died since you last groaned, have you?"
Of course there was no answer, but Ellie could feel Charles' heart rate beating steadily under his palm. Ellie was relieved. "Charles," call Ellie, trying to sound fierce. "I'd really appreciate it if you could wake up right now."
When Charles' body jolted just a little, Ellie put her index and middle fingers over the mouth of the bottle and tilted it, wetting her own skin with a cold whiskey. The drink evaporated quickly on top of her skin, so Ellie repeated it again, this time letting the bottle pour its contents for longer. When Ellie was satisfied with her wet hand, she clenched her hand under Charles' nose.
"Whaa... Ayaa... Pleeh!"
charles' words are incomprehensible. He jerked awake like a bullet fired, gnawing flabbergasted, looking like a man waking from a nightmare.
Ellie quickly retreated to avoid Charles's hand shaking which was not necessarily directional, but not fast enough, because Charles' hand had hit the bottle that Ellie was holding. The bottle was thrown into the air, spilling its contents. Ellie jumped back, and this time she was pretty fast. All the liquor was spilled onto Charles who was still speaking indistinctly.
"What did you do to me?" sue Charles after speaking clearly.
"What did I do to you?" tease Ellie
Charles coughed and pursed his nose. "I'm like a drunk."
"Squeezed like two days ago."
"Two days ago I..."
"Drunk," Ellie said.
Charles's eyes darkened. "I'm drunk, not a drunk. Two different things. And you..." Charles leaned towards Ellie, but then frowned and held her head.
"Charles?" ellie asked worriedly, forgetting that she was angry with him because Charles had blamed Ellie for everything that happened to him. Ellie just saw that Charles was in pain. It was in a lot of pain, and his facial expression clearly showed that.
"For God's sake" Charles grumbled. "Did anyone hit me in the head with wood?"
"I want to do it" Ellie tried to joke, that her words could ease Charles' pain.
"There's so much I can do if I'm born a man" Ellie murmured, "and marrying you doesn't include that."
"I'm lucky" Charles replied, still frowning. "You too."
"I wish I could keep it that way."
the awkward silence spread, and Ellie, feeling compelled to explain all the new events that had occurred when Charles was unconscious, said, "About this whiskey... I'm sorry, but I'm just trying to..."
"Burned me?"
"Not even if the advice is actually acceptable. I'm just trying to wake you up. Smell from alcohol. Then you spilled that bottle when you woke up."
"How do I feel like I've been hit by a train while you don't look like you've been hurt at all?"
Ellie's lips formed a wry smile. "People must think that a gentleman like you would be relieved if the woman's condition was intact and nothing was lacking."
"I'm very polite, My Lady. But I'm confused too."
"It seems you're not too polite not to condemn my presence. Anyhow..." Ellie flicked her hand indifferently into the air, "lucky for you because I don't really care about such matters."
Charles closed his eyes, wondering why he had to go through such an unnecessary string of sentences to get to the core of his sentence.
"I fell on top of you when I was thrown off the train" Ellie said. "You must have suffered a wound to your back when you fell, but the pain you felt in. ah. ah. the front, probably because. ah. me." Ellie blinked a few times, then fell silent. Her cheeks look pink.
"so."
Ellie gulped nervously. "Do you want me to help you wake up?"
"Yes, thank you." Charles received Ellie's helping hand and pulled himself up, trying to ignore the sting of pain that was felt in her every move. When he finally stood up straight, he placed his hands on his waist and stretched his head to the left. Some of his muscles were grinding. Charles resisted the urge to smile when he saw Ellie frowning.
"It doesn't seem very promising" Ellie said.
Charles did not retaliate, only re-stretched his head, this time in the opposite direction. He was relieved to hear a crackling sound a second time. After a while, his gaze fell onto the overturned horse carriage, and he curled softly. The wheels of the train were detached and crushed to pieces by the body of the train.
Ellie followed Charles and said, "Yes, I tried to tell you that the wheel was broken, but now I just know that you were in too much pain to listen to me."
When Charles knelt down to check for damage, Ellie surprised him by saying, "I'm really sorry that I left you just a few minutes ago. I don't know how sick you were. If I knew, I wouldn't have left. I. I shouldn't have left. I'm sorry."
Charles was touched by Ellie's sincere remarks, and was also amazed by the awareness to uphold her honor. "Your apology is actually unnecessary" said Charles gloomily. "but I appreciate it, and of course, accept it."
