Anna never knew that at her sister's house there was a strange problem. Mr. William did not say that at all in his letter. Of course, anyone would definitely not tell her the big problems that happened in her house if she wanted to invite someone to come there.
She was surprised to learn that Mr. William and his brother were not as happy as they were in the Netherlands. Like this morning, Sophie was furious as they were having breakfast and Mr. William seemed unconcerned, not trying to calm his wife down like he used to. He knew very well that Mr. William was a loving man who loved his wife very much. In the past, if her brother sulked, the man would quickly persuade her.
One week in the house, Anna realizes that the problem there is more than just Sophie's unfriendliness to the waiter. There was something else he didn't understand.
The next days were even harder. Sophie was becoming more and more her behavior, the slightest mistake from the servants could make her angry. Some even fired him so upset.
“If you can't work properly, don't come to this place. I don't need a useless person like you! From now on go from here!”
Anna saw Sophie saying those harsh words when she just came out of her room. Quickly approached her brother.
“What's up?”
“This lowly person made my dress so tangled, even though I wanted to go to the meeting place. I know he wants to embarrass me, they're all the same. Quietly looking for an opportunity so that I can be laughed at. Do not know themselves, even though I have paid a lot!”
Anna calmed her brother, then through the gaze asked the servant to leave. The waiter with a grateful look nodded obediently then quickly walked away from them.
“You must not be fooled by their attitude, Anna. Really, I warned you. These people, if given a heart, will ask for more and continue to do so. Don't know yourself.”
“Already, Sophie. Don't be angry like this again, your face will follow tangled and the people at the meeting will find out if you are angry. Don't you want them to see you as a nice, friendly person?”
Sophie sighed harshly, but realized what her sister said was true as well. He didn't want to end up cursing people, not this time. She should look beautiful and fresh for the meeting this time.
“Alright, you have a point too.”
“Can I come to your meeting, Sophie?”
Her brother widened, leaving Anna confused. Shouldn't need to be that surprised, didn't Sophie also take him to one of her meetings? Why is the response too much this time?
“What's up?”
“No, this time you don't have to come.”
That was all Sophie said and Anna chose not to say anything more.
“Where are you going?”
Mr. William appeared, looking at his wife with a dislike expression. Those who are seen also respond to the same view.
“Or do you want to meet Frederick Bloed?”
“What do you mean? You don't hear what those lowly people are saying! They just like to talk and talk. You should just fire them, then find a better person. Who only works, without telling his employer behind.”
“Then if they all got fired, would you stop to see that guy?”
“William, I can't believe you said that to your own wife! You kira—”
“So you still consider me your husband? You still think you're my wife? Didn't he? After everything you've done, you still want to be called a wife? You're dating another guy and still want to be my wife? You're crazy, Sophie! You're crazy!”
It was the first time Anna knew what was really going on in this house. Her brother had an affair with another man, it was fitting that Mr. William's attitude changed. It turned out that this was what caused there to be a huge gulf between them.
Sophie left Lord William in a rage, not accepting such words. Even though what her husband said was true. He was playing with one of the military members who served in the area where he lived. But of course he won't admit it.
After Sophie left, Anna approached Sir William who was silent where he was standing. “So because of this you actually asked me to come here?”
“I'm sorry, Anna. I didn't mean it that way, but I think someone should wake Sophie up, and that's you. Only you can. Not even me, her husband can. If I asked my father or mother to come, she would be embarrassed to see Sophie's behavior. I don't feel good making them awkward, whereas you .. you'd be better able to think healthily about this.”
“But how can I do it? You alone as her husband can not, let alone me. In the past, maybe he would have listened to me, but now I'm not sure. I think he's plunged too deep into his current attitude. I'm not sure I can change it.” Anna kept quiet, then continued after a while, “And if I could change it, would you still accept Sophie as your wife?”
William did not answer. He himself did not know what the answer to that question was. Sophie had obviously betrayed him by playing behind, there was no way she wouldn't feel hurt. And if Sophie comes to her senses, she doesn't know if she can forgive him. His pain is pretty bad. His pride as a man as well as a husband has been trampled.
The man took a deep breath, then walked away. Anna silently looked at her brother-in-law's lethargic back. Just this time he saw her in such a difficult situation. But it turned out that something worse happened later, which Anna did not expect would happen at all.
It rained that night. Anna, who felt that the air in the Dutch East Indies was too hot, opened her bedroom window wide and stood there, enjoying the cold wind that cooled her body. That's chilly.
There was lightning once out there, but Anna remained standing in her place. He was rubbing his arm slowly when he heard a loud noise, like a shot not so far away. No way, it must be just thunder. There was no way it was gunshots, who was shooting these nights, he thought.
But within seconds of the eruption, there was another female scream, which Anna knew was Sophie's voice. His body stiffened. Means it was really a gunshot and .. chances are someone was shot. Anna quickly ran out of the room, towards Sophie's room.
Not a single servant was seen pacing back and forth or running into his master's room. Did they not hear the voice? It was impossible, with such a close distance they must have heard. Or do they not care so much? Or how? Anna doesn't know. He kept running.
Her brother's bedroom door opened and she almost fell down in shock. He could see Mr. William's trembling back, his right hand grasping a single gun aiming forward. In front of him, lay a naked man with a hole in his chest that continued to bleed. Sophie stood beside the man, with a pale face and a blanket covering her body.
Anna quickly turned her eyes away, she suddenly felt nauseous.
