"I'm actually confused I should have caught you Tau gave you an award."
"Why?"
"You have committed a crime, but you have also exposed it. I think only a madman can do that."
Bayu smiled while stirring the coffee that Bara ordered for him. Bara came to take him to the police station. Before that, Bara invited him to a casual chat at the cafe. A very deviant arrest process from SOP.
"Maybe I'm crazy."
More like crazy for love. Who else could make a Bayu like that if not his own wife. Prita once said if he wanted Bayu to have a normal life, no longer related to dangerous things. He doesn't like it every time he sees a new wound on Bayu's body.
"I can't help you escape a lawsuit. But, I can make you serve a sentence that is not too long, as long as you want to cooperate."
"Are you sure you said something like this to me? Aren't you a dedicated cop? I seem to have listened to those words a few times."
Bara chuckled, "If I had no dedication to my work, I might have just let you go. But, I want to keep you accountable for what you've done."
"Patriating a person who has repented like you will only make the prison fuller. It is better to imprison the corruptors who are always hiding behind his power."
"If you want to imprison them, just use the data I gave you. Have you not learned it?"
"I've been reading with my dad. And we were so shocked. Your father was too involved with the upper class. Names that have always looked good in the eyes of the community turned out to keep a lot of decay behind it."
"My dad said you were crazy, could give me that secret information."
"That's why my dad killed Ben. And he also wants to get rid of me, his own son."
"Actually I just want him to give up and end his crimes. But, until the end he'd rather finish me off than give up."
"In the police later, just answer the question about the smuggling of marijuana. You don't have to answer questions about anything else. Including the death of your father. Just tell me you tried to escape because your father tried to kill you, and then the police came to save you and your wife."
"Do it like that if you want to get back together with your wife."
"I'll also testify that mitigated you about the smuggling case. Tell them you did it under threat. Understood?"
Bayu just nodded. He felt his meeting with Bara was a destiny that had been arranged by God. If God does not grant forgiveness for his sin, it is impossible for him to be met with someone like Bara who can understand his condition.
"Before you take me to the police station, can you take me somewhere?"
"Where?"
At Bayu's request, Bara escorted him to the most expensive cemetery in J. City. Garden of Heaven, an elite burial place that is far from the impression of haunted and handcuff like a tomb in general, the final resting place for the upper class who have a lot of money and want to remember the people they once loved during life.
There are two adjacent tombs, the tombs of Samuel and Ben. Bayu placed a bouquet of flowers that he carried between the two tombs.
On the day of the funeral of the two people who had accompanied the journey of his life, Bayu could not come to witness. He had to accompany Prita who had just finished surgery.
Before living a new life behind bars, at least he wanted to visit their tomb first.
When she thought back to Ben, her tears just fell. He still can't accept Ben's death. Ben should still be alive and able to live the life he wants.
"Ben is the son of my father's driver. She's two years older than me."
"I've never felt formal school life like other kids. From Elementary School to High School, I went home schooling. So, I don't have any friends, my friend just Ben."
"At Junior High, his father died. He lived as a country. My father was kind enough to send him to college."
"I'm sure he won't regret his death, because you've treated him well in his lifetime." Bara patted Bayu's shoulder.
"In hindsight, I've been so disrespectful since I first met you. We're all different ages, and I just call you by name."
"Haha.... That's up to you. I also like that to Ben, I just call his name even though he's older than me."
Bayu got up from his seat, "Alright, now you can take me to the police station."
Bayu handed both his hands. Bara took the handcuffs from inside her jacket pocket, then put them on her wrists.
"It's the first time I've been so gentle to a criminal."
"Haha.... And you're even friends with this guy you call a criminal."
Bara brought Bayu back with his car. This time, the goal is to bring Bayu to the police station.
Arriving there, the interrogation officer was waiting to ask for some information from Bayu related to the case being handled by the police. Bara was not included in the interrogation team, he was in charge of taking her only.
Bayu must face the questions for the sake of the questions addressed to him. His attitude was so calm and his answer was as relaxed as it flowed for what it was. The advice given by Bara to answer as necessary he did. If Bayu misspoke, Bara will also be dragged because of his actions.
Bayu's status, which was initially limited to being a witness, has risen to become a suspect. For a while, he had to stay inside a temporary prison room pending further investigation.
Inside the new place, Bayu is not alone. There are many people who were detained while there for waiting for the legal process that is still ongoing. The people who were inside there, were boundless in age, ranging from the old ones, to the late teens. They went in there for different reasons, ranging from minor crimes to serious crimes like him.
Bayu also meets a depressed-looking Mr. Saddam sitting alone in a corner. His appearance is disheveled, maybe he is very stressed and shocked to face the reality if he now has to deal with the law.
Jayu tried to sit next to him.
"You were finally caught, too. Glad there's a friend I know. Haha.... "
"I heard that your father and his man Ben were killed by the police."
"Yes, you're right." Answer Bayu briefly. He didn't want Saddam to know that his father died because of him.
"Who do you think is better? Dead or caught by the police?"
Apparently Saddam can still be normal if invited to talk. Maybe since then he looks depressed because there is no talking partner.
"I chose to be caught by the police, which means that being imprisoned is better than having to die at their hands."
"Your punishment will be lighter than mine, for your position is only a courier. Meanwhile, I was charged with possession of illegal goods, dealers, and the city. My sentence is a minimum of 20 years in prison or a death sentence."
"A lifetime in prison is to me the same as death."
"At least those who are still alive in prison have the opportunity to do good and repent. Who knows can make amends for past mistakes."
"Haha.... Sounds like you're a preacher here."
"Why don't you just run abroad?"
"Running away from problems will only add to other problems" Bayu said casually.
Saddam could only laugh at the reply from the young man beside him. He was too calm to deal with this kind of problem, as if he was no longer interested in discussing about freedom.
