Divorce is not forbidden in Islam, but Allah hates divorce. That is, divorce becomes the last choice for husband and wife when there is no longer a way out in the face of problems in the household. The law of divorce has been stipulated in the Quran letter al-Baqarah verse 227 which reads: 

wa in 'azamuth-tholaaqo fa innalloha samii'un 'aliim 

It means: "And if they are determined to divorce, then surely, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing." 

Furthermore, this verse on divorce law continues in al-Baqarah verses 228 to 232.

Divorce laws in Islam can vary. Divorce can be mandatory, sunnah, makruh, mubah, until haram, depending on the problem and the situation.

The mandatory divorce law

Divorce becomes mandatory if the husband and wife can no longer be reconciled and have no other way out other than divorce to solve the problem. Usually, this matter will be brought to the local Religious Court. If the court decides that talaq is the best decision, then the divorce becomes mandatory.

In addition to the problem that can not be resolved, another reason for divorce becomes mandatory is when the husband or wife does a vile act and does not want to repent. Or when one of the couples apostates alias out of Islam, then divorce becomes mandatory law.

Sunnah divorce law

Sometimes divorce is encouraged and get the law of the sunnah in some circumstances. One of the causes of divorce becomes a legal sunnah is when a husband is unable to bear the needs of his wife. In addition, when the wife cannot keep her honor or does not want to carry out her obligations to God, and the husband is no longer able to guide her, then it is circumcised for a husband to divorce her.

The divorce law is broken

Divorce law becomes makruh if done without any cause syar’i. For example, if a wife has a noble character and has good religious knowledge, the law of divorcing her is makruh. The reason, the husband is considered not to have a clear reason why should divorce his wife if their actual household can still be maintained.

Divorce law is changed

There are several reasons that make divorce law is mutable. For example, if the wife cannot obey the husband and behave badly. If the husband can not hold or be patient, then the legal divorce is changed or can be done. In addition, divorce becomes defunct if the husband no longer has the desire to have sex or his wife is no longer fertile or menopause.

The illegal divorce law

Although the divorce was not initially prohibited in Islam, but the divorce became illegal if the talaq dropped by the husband is not in accordance with Islamic law. Divorce is illegal in some circumstances. For example, divorcing a wife in the condition of menstruation or puerperia, and dropping talaq on the wife after having sex without being known to be pregnant or not. In addition, a husband is also haram divorce his wife if the goal is to prevent the wife from demanding the right to his property.
