Diah accompanied Melani to the police station to report the rape case Melani experienced. They were received by officers in the investigation room. Criminal investigators questioned the chronology of what happened to Melani. While other officers recorded it in computer data. Before the investigation, Diah asked the officers not to expose the case. Because, the ink porters who usually stand by at the police station will write every case that comes in. Officers responded to Diah's request. They closed the investigation room.
“Actually we are very sorry, why this case has only been reported now. It should be so after the incident you immediately report to the police, so that we can immediately identify the perpetrator!” the officer said he regretted the report submitted by Melani.
Melani's heart became shrivelled to hear the words of the officer. Diah who realizes her best friend's feelings soon counters the officer's words.
“This friend of mine is in a state of shock and trauma, sir. He had no idea to report immediately. He is also afraid that this problem will burden his family's life if it is known to the public,” said Diah asked for understanding.
“But in the end you guys reported too, right? In the case of a crime like this, we must act quickly in order to immediately subdue the perpetrator. What is called evil should not be allowed to pass. But all right, we're gonna keep processing the case. For that we need some evidence and witnesses that can be used as a basis to identify the perpetrator. Does the sister have any evidence or witnesses that can be brought?’ ask the officer then.
Diah turned to Melani, but the woman looked confused. Melani said softly, “Sorry, sir. No one knew about it because it happened in the toilet. The current state was also dark, because the lights went out..”.
“Does sister still keep panties or clothes worn at the time of the incident?”
“E... I have burned it.”
“Why burned? That is evidence that can be used as a basis for identifying the perpetrator. If the clothes are still there and have not been washed, we will be able to find the perpetrator's fingerprint, the liquid****, or perhaps the haircut attached to the sister's clothes. Darling... sister even obliterated the only evidence,” said the officer in a disappointed tone.
“At that time my mind was in a frenzy, sir. I feel disgusted by the clothes and do not think that all of it can be used as evidence,” Melani said in a regretful tone.
“Yes, this is the mistake that often occurs in rape cases. Evidence of underwear or clothing worn by the victim was removed, washed, or burned. It should not be done for any reason, so that it is easier to get proof of crime!”
“But, Sir. We have other evidence that could be used as a clue to arrest the perpetrator. After the incident, the rapist terrorized my friend over the phone. Maybe you can track down the rapist if he calls again,” said Diah revealing other facts.
“It is difficult to track a dark phone, especially if the perpetrator's number is kept secret. We do not know with what the caller uses the services of the operator. The location of the caller is also difficult to know. We need eavesdropping tools and tracking procedures using sophisticated devices to find the perpetrator. That takes a long time. We better take the easier road first. Look, I'd like to know who Melani's sister's close friends are, especially men. Usually in the case of rape the perpetrator is only the closest person or lover of the victim!”
“This friend of mine has not had a lover, sir,” replied Diah.
“Then, who are the men who are close or have attention to sister Melani?”
She turned back to Melani. But Melani seemed reluctant to answer he hinted with his eyes so that Diah alone answered.
“From our knowledge, there are three men in our office who have a concern for Melani. He is Mr. Frans, marketing director, then Rico, financial manager, and Toni, accounting staff. Among the three, the most aggressive approach to Melani is Toni. But this friend of mine never responded to all three. She doesn't want to date yet,” Diah explained. While Melani downcast shy.
“That night there were only security officers and some employees who worked overtime. We don't know if our three suspected colleagues are still in the office or not.”
The investigating officer nodded. He then turned to his colleague and hinted to stop the recording.
“Alright, for a while a question from us. Later we will match the results of our investigation in the field,” said the officer.
“Are you going to do a check at the scene?” ask Diah.
“Yes, of course! To get objective data we have to check the TKP and also question some people who are suspected or not far from the TKP at the time of the incident.”
“But, Sir. We beg you not to do it prominently. I am afraid this will affect my friend's mentality. He does not want colleagues in the office to know the events that happened to him,” said Diah applying.
“Iya, Sir! Please, do not tell friends in the office about the events that happened to me,” continued Melani with a heartfelt mimic.
“Yes, we will work on it later. We will conduct an investigation in secret,” the officer promised.
Melani was a little relieved. He then looked at Diah. Since there was nothing else to talk about, they later said goodbye. On the way Diah again convinced Melani that everything would be overcome well. The police will arrest the perpetrator and Melani can live her life in peace. No more terror and threats to his soul. Melani was slightly comforted by Diah's words.
That afternoon, Melani packed her things into a bag. He's getting ready to go home. The one next to him was finished as well. The girl approached Melani. “You're done, Mel?”
“Yes, In. I'm done!” melani replied as she moved from her place and approached Melani who was waiting.
But just as they were about to step away, suddenly the phone on the table rang. Diah and Melani looked at each other. Melani's face changed. He did not dare to pick up the phone. He understood the fear of his friend. He then lifted it up.
“Halo…? Who is this with?” said Diah with a serious face, but a moment later the look of her face turned relieved. “Oh, you, Den. Kirain. What's up…? Yeah, yeah, we're done. We're going home. Fine, Den.”
Diah put down the phone. Melani who had been worried and anxious in case the one who called the rapist turned relieved. Apparently the one who called Deni, Diah's lover. “Deni called. He's still on the road, coming to pick us up,” Diah explained to Melani. The girl nodded.
“Ya, already. We just wait in front, yuk!” take Diah while pulling Melani's hand out of the room.
