The night, the atmosphere of the village is getting quieter. No television or even radio for entertainment makes everyone choose to go into the room when night falls.
In the living room now there are only Riani and Bayu who sit opposite each other. A piece of boiled yam is still left on the plate accompanied by two glasses of sweet tea that only a little left.
"Bay," called Riani, her voice soft and clear.
Bayu did not say anything, he just looked at Riani.
"What did your father mean? Did what?"
"Oh, that's ...." Bayu smiled knot. "Ritual custom, Ri, let our relationship last and nothing can interfere."
"What to do, Bay?"
Bayu nodded his head. "Everyone in this village is doing it, Ri. If not, then maybe the relationship is not lasting, there is a problem."
"Oh, that's it, Bay," said Riani nodding her head, understanding. "What is the rich ritual?"
"Later you also know, it is difficult to explain, dear," said Bayu gently. "Udah malem, sleep yuk."
"Yes," said Riani who nodded her head and moved from her seat.
"Are you comfortable not sleeping in this room?" tanya Bayu who drove Riani to the front of the bedroom.
Riani nodded. "Nyaman, why the hell?"
"Thank God, I'm so scared, baby." Bayu rubbed Riani's cheek. "I'm lucky to have you."
Riani blushed. "Babies!"
"Yes, you sleep, rest. Good night, Babe."
"It's really, really" said Riani as she closed the door to her room.
Riani's footsteps drew closer to the foam mattress, she laid her body on the mattress and pulled a thin batik cloth to cover her body.
If you look at it longer, Riani is like a corpse.
His mind made Riani immediately open the cloth that covered her body. He was horrified to imagine that. To minimize the cold, Riani chose to curl up.
The clock shows at one o'clock when Riani wakes up. His sense of hearing raised a noise from outside.
"What's so noisy?" Riani moved from her seat.
The state of the house was very quiet, it seemed like everyone was still sleeping soundly.
His voice came from outside the house. The curious Riani decided to peek out of the window.
Seen outside a crowd of people who were crossing the road. On the front, six people were idle.
"Some one died?" lirih Riani, frowning.
He watched the people walking past him who were hiding in the house. They seem to be walking slowly.
"One night will someone be buried?" lirih Riani again, she felt clueless.
They were all wearing all black clothes, it seemed like the departure of that person made them very grieved.
Until the last row had finished past Riani, she decided to return to the room.
Riani could not continue her sleep. His mind kept thinking about what he had just seen.
Now the state of the village is back quiet, but Riani still can not continue her sleep until morning.
"Let me help, Mom," said Riani who approached Utari.
The clock shows at four in the morning. Riani only realized if Utari woke up this early to prepare everything.
"Well, are you awake, Ri?"
Riani chuckles. "Udah, Mom. Let me help you, Mom."
"Yes, you helped me pick up the ring."
Riani nodded, she was happy to be able to help Utari.
While his hand picked out a nice kale leaf, Riani noticed Utari. The woman still looked very young, different from the very old Suwiryo with wrinkles everywhere.
"Mom," call Riani.
Utari who was lifting a pot of water to be placed on the stove turned his head. "Yes, are you having trouble?"
"No," said Riani, shaking her head. "Can I ask you something different, Mother?"
Utari did not immediately make a sound, for a while she was silent. "Come," he said, smiling. "What do you want, Ri?" He took the lid of the pot that was still lying on the table. "Just ask me, papa."
"Ehm, it's not good, but I'm curious." Riani laughed stiffly. "I see mom and dad how different ages are you?"
"Oh, yes, I'm his second wife father, Nduk." He continues his activities. "Bayu's mother died, kept my father married to me. I'm not Bayu's real mother, but I'm the biological mother of Bayu's two young sisters. Her name is Dara and Gea."
Riani nodded her head. He just found out if it turns out that Bayu's biological mother is no longer there. "Oh yeah, Mom, it's just here if someone dies immediately buried huh?"
"Usually yes, it would pity his body if you have to wait a long time," explained Utari. "What if it's not there?"
"Yes there are some, just generally yes if you die the night buried the morning."
"Oh .. yes the same here as well, Ri, especially here before Maghrib just entered the house no outside activities, residents also where dare to go to the cemetery night-night."
"Well, but last night I saw a group carrying a coffin, ma'am."
Riani stopped picking kale. So also with Utari who then turned her head and looked towards Riani.
"You saw them last night?"
Riani nodded.
It was seen the look on Utari's face that was immediately confused and frightened.
"What's wrong, Mom?" asked Riani who also scrunched her forehead.
"That's a sign, Nduk. It's best to do the ritual tonight."
"The "ritual? What's the sign, Mom?"
Riani was silent, she still did not understand what was really happening.
Breakfast was as usual. This time two younger sisters Bayu-Dara and Gea wear school uniforms.
"Announcement ...announcement."
Breakfast stopped for a moment, everything in the living room looked outwards.
The voice of a man was heard from the loudspeakers in the village surau.
"Announcement .. sad news. Innalilahi wa innailaihi raji. Has passed away, Ms. Sopirah bint Aman. Died last night at his sale."
"Do you remember the mothers you spoke to yesterday?" tanya Bayu after sipping white water.
Riani nodded. "Him?"
Bayu nodded.
"Innalilahi wa innailaihi raji'un, but yesterday still looks healthy."
"He's late coming home" said Suwiryo.
"It could be, because if I bring Riani too she is still in order to sell."
"Tremendous pity" Utari said in response.
"A bad temper?"
Bayu, Suwiryo and Utari nodded almost simultaneously.
"Anyone who has not entered the house at least five o'clock in the afternoon will be found dead" Bayu explained.
While Riani scrunched her forehead, not understanding.
Dara and Gea left for school on foot. Not long after their departure, Suwiryo also came out of the house with a sickle in her hand. Meanwhile, Bayu went to the funeral home to help bury the body of Mother Sopirah.
"What's the first time, Mom?" tanya Riani approached Utari who was in the kitchen.
On the table close to the stove were already two dining boxes. One was full of rice and the other was empty. Meanwhile Utari seems busy putting kale vegetables into plastic.
"You're sent to the father?" ask Riani again.
Utari nodded her head. "Yes, yeah."
"Can I come?"
"You wanna come?" ask Utari.
Riani nodded her head, she smiled. "Can you?"
"By dong, it just so happens that you're coming. You'll bring the teapot, will you?"
Riani's eyes looked towards the direction Utari was pointing at, a small golden teapot. Riani.
"Cold skirt?" riani asked shortly after feeling the teapot.
"Yes, it's iced tea sweet." Utari continued to pack food for her husband. "Let's go now."
The little teapot was already in Riani's hands. When he turned around, he suddenly felt his head dizzy. His eyes were blurry and his balance slowly disappeared.
"I-mom." Riani tried to call Utari, but too late, she first fell down.
"RIANI?!" utari's voice sounded firm and loud.
Riani could see Utari who was standing not far from her looking at her, she looked angry, but a few seconds later she rushed towards Riani.
"Riani, what's wrong with you?"
Riani shook her head. "Suddenly dizzy, Mom."
"Yes, let's take you to the room. You don't have to take lunch."
Riani tried to move and stepped into the room by being swept by Utari. His body was laid on the bed.
The door to the room is still open. Riani felt her head getting dizzy until she was unconscious. Utari had gone to deliver lunch for her husband.
I do not know how long Riani did not wake up, but Riani felt the wind hit all parts of her body. Cold, goosebumps and also .. amused.
Both of Riani's eyes slowly opened. At the same time the dizziness in the head again attacked.
In a still blurry view, Riani looked at someone standing on top of her. He felt no stranger to that man.
"Ba-Wood?"
Riani blinked her eyes repeatedly until she could see Bayu clearly.
Realizing that his body was wearing nothing else, Riani immediately moved away.
"What are you doing, Bay?!" Riani covered her body with batik cloth on the mattress.
"I-I-I'm sorry, Ri, I-I didn't accidentally."
"What is it on purpose?!"
"You must not be angry with me, dear," said Bayu who was about to hug Riani. Riani quickly stayed away. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, honey."
"How's khilaf? You're clearly aware, Bay!" Riani was distancing herself.
"I can explain, Ri." Bayu looks so scared. "A-I didn't accidentally see you sleeping, kept suddenly rich there was a whisper I made you a second until I confessed this to you. I-I'm sorry, honey, I didn't do it on purpose."
Riani was speechless watching the man who was already brash at her. "I can't forgive you for that, Bay."
"I'm sorry, Ri, I didn't mean it. I haven't done anything yet, have I?"
"How am I?! What is it, Bay?!"
"I-I mean, I-I haven't gotten far, Ri. Besides, if I were rich, I would also be responsible, honey. I love you, whatever you accept."
"But it's not time yet, Bay."
"I know, honey, eat it I'm sorry." Bayu grabbed Riani's hand gently, kissing the back of his hand for a long time until his eyes glanced back at Riani. "You want to apologize? He said you love me, think of the apologies you gave me as a sign of love for me, honey. I'm sorry, if you love me."
