From Aslam that Umar ibn Khaththab radhiallahu anhu said,

لاَ يَكُنْ حُبُّكَ كَلَفًا وَلاَ بَغُضُكَ تَلَفًا فَقُلْتُ كَيْفَ ذَاكَ ؟ قَالَ إِذَا أَحْبَبْتَ كَلِفْتَ كَلَفَ الصَّبِيِّ وَإِذَا أَبْغَضْتَ أَحْبَبْتَ لِصَاحِبِكَ التَّلَف

“Don't your love make an exaggeration for you, nor does your hatred cause destruction for you. 

Allah ‘Azza wa Jalla says,

وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَاكُمْ أُمَّةً وَسَطًا لِّتَكُونُوا شُهَدَاءَ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَيَكُونَ الرَّسُولُ عَلَيْكُمْ شَهِيدًا

“And so (after all) We have made you (people of Islam), middle and chosen people that you may bear witness to (deeds) of men and that the Apostle (Muhammad) may bear witness to (deeds) you.” (QS. Al Baqara: 143)
