Allah Ta’ala says

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا وَقُودُهَا النَّاسُ وَالْحِجَارَةُ

O father, you are the priest and the person in charge

Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam said,

كُلُّكُمْ رَاعٍ وَكُلُّكُمْ مَسْئُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ الْإِمَامُ رَاعٍ وَمَسْئُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ وَالرَّجُلُ رَاعٍ فِي أَهْلِهِ وَهُوَ مَسْئُولٌ عَنْ 

“Every one of you is a leader, and every leader will be held accountable for the one he leads. The Imam is the leader who will be held accountable for his people. A husband is a leader and will be held accountable for his family (HR. Al-Bukhari no. 844 and Muslim no. 1829)

Once upon a time in the new year before I was teaching with my roommate, I,At that time my teacher once told his students including me also if we as Muslims in the world are forbidden to follow the customs of western people in the turn of the year (New Year)we as Muslims are not allowed to chicken roast or fireworks and other habits because it usually happens in the new year, right??But my teacher said again to his students may hold a chicken roast or grilled corn event is allowed as long as the intention and purpose is not to enliven the new year event.

First, celebrating the new year is the same as imitating their habits. The prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam forbids us to imitate the habits of the ugly, including the infidels. He said,

من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم

“Who imitates the habits of one race then he belongs to that race.” (Hadith shahih Abu Daud's account)

Abdullah bin Amr bin Ash said,

من بنى بأرض المشركين وصنع نيروزهم ومهرجاناتهم وتشبه بهم حتى يموت خسر في يوم القيامة

“Anyone who lives in a pagan country, participates in celebrating Nairuz and Mihrajan (the feast of the Magi), and imitates their customs, until death then he becomes a loser on doomsday.”

Second, following their feast day includes a form of loyalty and showing love to them. God forbid us to make them lovers (read: give loyalty) and show love to them. Allah says,

يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تتخذوا عدوي وعدوكم أولياء تلقون إليهم بالمودة وقد كفروا بما جاءكم من الحق …

“O you who believe, do not take My enemies and your enemies to be faithful friends whom you pass on to them (secrets), out of compassion; and they have denied the truth that has come to you.” (QS. Al-Mumprisoner: 1)

Third, the feast is part of religion and doctrine of belief, not merely a matter of world and entertainment. When the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam came in the city of Medina, the inhabitants of the city celebrated two holidays, Nairuz and Mihrajan. He once said in front of the people of Medina,

قدمت عليكم ولكم يومان تلعبون فيهما إن الله عز و جل أبدلكم بهما خيرا منهما يوم الفطر ويوم النحر

“I come to you and you have two holidays, which you make as a time to play. Though Allah has replaced the two best holidays for you; eid al-fitri and eid al-adha.” (CHR. Ahmad, Abu Daud, and Nasa'i
