Lantern High School lesson hours always start earlier than other schools.
Emily had already entered the classroom just before the bell rang. He slept a little late last night and, still drowsy, accidentally set off his alarm and Dessy did not wake him up on leave. When he opened his eyes, it showed at 6:50.
He didn't even have time for breakfast. After washing his face quickly, he picked up his bag and rushed towards school.
Classes are full of students. Class 3 did not look as serious as the superior classes, most of the students were whispering.
Emily put her bag in her chair and noticed that the seat behind her was empty.
He thinks Raymond's just late. But after the first class ended, his seat remained empty.
Emily could not help but ask the class president.
"Em, the homeroom teacher said Raymond took a leave of absence, but he didn't tell me why." The class leader looked at her nervously, as if amazed that Emily cared about someone she had nothing to do with.
"All right, thank you." Unknowingly, Emily thanked him and returned to her seat.
High School Lessons were not difficult for him, but it had been a while since he had last studied them, so it took him some time to learn them again.
Emily had always been a diligent and serious student, but today in class, she couldn't focus on continuing to worry about Raymond.
"Why did he take a leave of absence? Is he sick?"
His mind was chaotic, filled with worry. At the last hour of school when a boy from the next class entered the classroom, they asked about the chair Raymond used to occupy, and took home his weekend duties.
Emily takes her bag and rushes out of class, calling the boy.
"Excuse me, did you deliver Raymond's duties? What's wrong with her? Is he sick?"
The boy, who was holding a notebook and paper, hesitated for a few seconds before replying, "No, his younger cousin had an accident. Raymond's family couldn't spare time, so the family asked Raymond to take time off and take care of his cousin."
Even when the boy's figure disappeared in the hallway, Emily still couldn't believe what she heard.
"Raymond?"
He only knew Raymond had lost both his parents and his only relative was his elderly grandfather.
It seems he really knows about Raymond.
The twilight sunlight dyed the hallway with a reddish color, as if dyeing the entire building. Emily was silent in her mind, her shoulders suddenly patted hard.
"Waiting for me, huh?"
Hearing a familiar voice, Emily's heartbeat died down as she turned her head away. Then, look down at the person who has patted his shoulder. "Can you stop surprising me?"
Andrian Nicholas with sweat dripping down his forehead, made him look like a man who had just washed his face. He sweat dabbed on his forehead with his sleeves, saying nonchalantly, "You're shocked? I pat you softly."
He might have finished playing basketball; his whole body smelled of sweat.
Emily took a few steps back and said, "Stay further, you smell so bad."
"Yes, yes, Princess, let's go. The car was waiting at the school door. Do you want me to bring your bag?" His face looked annoying, and his words were quite insinuating.
Emily longed for this passionate boy, but she simply smiled and did not continue the conversation. His voice became softer as he said, "Let's go."
Andrian Nicholas raised his eyebrows and followed in his footsteps.
On Friday night, it felt like people were walking more leisurely. Emily and Andrian Nicholas walk out of the school gate, and a Bentley is parked on the corner.
Her house near the school was bought by Emily's father so she could go to school easily. Usually, only Emily and the nanny live there.
But every weekend, Emily would return to her old house to spend time with her family.
Andrian Nicholas is Emily's neighbor, and they're childhood friends. Every Friday, when the driver of the Nicholas Family comes to pick her up, she'll also pick up Emily on the way.
The car had no AC, and one of the windows cracked slightly, allowing a cool breeze to enter.
Emily looked at the look on her face and was dissolved in a daydream.
After graduating from high school, Andrian Nicholas's family business declined, so they moved on. They rarely met, sometimes just exchanged messages.
However, in the toughest and most difficult days, this cheerful-looking young boy had always secretly helped Emily.
Emily hasn't seen him close like this in a long time.
The twilight wind blew the child's bangs, and his bright tea-brown eyes, always showed gentleness when staring at people.
“Why are you looking at me like that? Are you starting to realize that I'm handsome?” Andrian Nicholas saw Emily looking at him and smiling cynically.
Emily turned her face away and laughed.
As expected, he still likes to joke.
The car slowly entered the villa area, the Grace Family Villa still looked the same as in his memory.
Emily put down her backpack and looked down at the pair of black leather shoes placed at the entrance.
His heart skipped a beat, and he anxiously asked Aunt Marta, "Have my sister gone home yet?"
"Yes, the young master just got off the plane and is dealing with some business dealings in the study room" Aunt Marta replied.
Emily ran barefoot up the stairs, followed by Aunt Marta who was close, calling, "Miss, put on sandals, catch a cold."
The wooden staircase felt somewhat fragile, letting out sounds every step of the way.
Emily reached the second floor and met with Joshua Grace.
His white t-shirt was not the slightest bit of wrinkle, even his hair was neatly maintained, not looking like someone who had just descended from a long-haul flight.
Just between his handsome eyebrows, there was a trace of fatigue.
"Sister." Emily hugged him tightly, and tears flowed uncontrollably, drenching her clean and tidy white T-shirt.
Joshua was surprised, timidly stroking his head and comforting him, his voice full of caution, "What's wrong, Emi? Is there a problem at school?"
"No," Emily sniffed, looking at him in a soft voice, "I just miss you."
It was good to see her brother alive and well.
Joshua chuckled and said, "I heard from my secretary, you couldn't reach me these few days and even tried to contact my secretary. You know, international calls aren't very smooth."
He hugged Emily's shoulder, slowly pushed her a few steps back, and said in a soothing voice, "Come, we go to my room. I brought you a present."
Emily doesn't care about any gifts, she just wants to chat with her brother.
But when Joshua took out the jewelry box, he could not help but be amazed and round his eyes.
Under the warm yellow light, the diamond necklace in the shape of a musical note glittered brightly.
"Do you like it?" Joshua lowered his gaze and asked with gentleness.
Emily nodded enthusiastically, "Yes, I like it a lot." He was intending to try it, but suddenly, Aunt Marta's voice sounded from outside the door, "Young master, Miss, please come down. Dinner is ready."
Emily keeps the necklace and goes downstairs with Joshua.
The dining table is full of joy and harmony. Emily could not take her eyes off her cheerful and calm parents and her cold but gentle sister.
Everything is at its best.
That long-lost sense of belonging encompassed his restless heart like warm water.
Silently, Emily lowered her head and wiped her tears. She decides that in this life, she will not only save Raymond but also do everything possible to save his brother's life.
*
On Monday morning, Emily took her sister to the hospital.
Joshua is a hard worker. He worked late, and often forgetting to eat was common to him.
Emily knew that a year later, her brother would die in a plane crash, but before it happened, her brother would be hospitalized several times for his stomach ailment.
Therefore, a few days ago, Emily made an online appointment with a doctor for a thorough health check.
A complete physical exam is required not to eat first, so they do not eat breakfast. After completing the blood draw test, Emily ordered breakfast for her brother.
The restaurant was not far away, and within fifteen minutes, the deliveryman called.
Since she only gave the hospital address without mentioning the floor, Emily had to run to the hospital entrance to pick up the order.
As Emily rushed in with two bags of porridge, the morning air smelled of grass.
In the front corner, a familiar figure flashed.
Tall yet thin, he looked exactly like Raymond.
Unable to hold back, Emily quietly approached and only realized that the figure was Raymond.
The hospital was full of people, and Raymond moved quickly amidst the crowd. He carried a bag of food to take home and wore a loose dark black coat on his thin body. He looked like a dry tree trunk covered in a loose plastic bag.
He quietly followed Raymond until he reached the third floor and entered a room in the corner.
The door was not tightly closed, and Emily silently looked into the room through the crack.
In the restroom, Raymond carefully opened the disposable spoon wrapper, then gave the porridge to the young man who was lying on the bed.
The youngster glanced at Raymond in a haughty manner before finally reluctantly picking up the porridge and slowly starting to eat.
After a few mouthfuls, he suddenly put down the spoon and said something to Raymond, pointing to the tub next door.
Emily is moved to learn that the young boy must be Raymond's cousin, which leads Raymond to take a leave of absence to care for him.
However, his cousin's attitude towards him was not family-worthy.
More like a master who threatened and demeaned the servant.
Inside the room, Raymond nodded his head slowly and after some time, he stood up, picked up the tub from the table, and walked towards the door.
Her steps are quick, and Emily can't dodge in time, so Emily's gaze meets directly with her eyes deep and dark.
Emily immediately calmed herself down and smiled without showing any nervousness, and said, "Hi, Raymond, what a coincidence to meet you here, haha."
For a moment, Raymond thought he was hallucinating.
He tightened his grip on the tub, emotions raging in his dark gaze, and after a moment, he bit his lips and replied quietly, "Hmm."
Despite the many words he had in his heart, he still only answered with one word.
Because he was afraid that if he said a few more words, he would start stuttering again.
The bright light in the hospital allowed Emily to see great fatigue between Raymond's forehead, even the dark red blood vessels on her skin were visible when her eyes were closed .
His heart ached when he saw a simple mat beside the patient's bed. He suddenly realized that Raymond must have been taking care of his cousin all night, probably without even turning a blind eye.
It seemed that he was also only buying breakfast for his cousin, not for himself.
The two stood in silence, Raymond's grasp growing stronger, until Emily softly asked, "Have you had breakfast?"
His mind, which hadn't slept all night, still couldn't believe seeing Emily.
Hearing this question, Raymond almost instinctively shook his head.
As expected.
Emily sighed and raised her eyes slightly, giving the pouch in her left hand as she said, "Here."
