There are several sources of hadith underlying the end of the puerperium of approximately 40 days, such as the hadith narrated by Umm Salamah which reads:

عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَعلى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهَا سَأَلَتْهُ كَمْ تَجْلِسُ الْـمَرْأَةُ إِذَا وَلَدَتْ؟ قَالَ: تَجْلِسُ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمَاً إِلَّا أَنْ تَرَى الطُّهْرَ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ

It means: "As narrated from Umm Salamah, she asked the Prophet Muhammad SAW: How long does a woman wait when she gives birth? The Prophet replied: The woman waits for 40 days unless she finds herself already holy before that."

The scholars themselves still differ opinions about the end of the puerperium in the teachings of Islam. However, most agree that the puerperium has ended when the woman has stopped bleeding or mucus or spots from her uterus have dried up in the span of time up to the limit of 40 days

The puerperium bath:

Nawaitul ghusla liraf'i hadatsin nifaasi lillahi Ta'aala

It means: "I intend to take a bath to purify the great hadas of the puerperium because of Allah Ta'ala."

Breath bath procedures:
