In the Muslim tradition, the birth of a child is usually celebrated with the event of aqiqahan. Aqiqah event is held with the aim to express happiness and give thanks to Allah SWT. Aqiqah ceremonies are usually performed by slaughtering processions of livestock such as goats, which are then distributed to families and neighbors.

Linguistically, aqiqah means “cut” derived from arabic “al-qath'u”. There is also another definition of aqiqah which is “the name of the newborn baby's hair”. According to the term, aqiqah is the process of slaughtering livestock on the seventh day after the baby is born. This is done as a form of gratitude to Allah SWT.

Aqiqah is usually performed on the 7th, 14th, or 21st day after the birth of a child. For boys, to carry out aqiqah it is mandatory to cut two goats while the daughter one goat only.

Sunnah, the law of aqiqah is the sunnah of muekkad, or sunnah that must take precedence. That is, if a Muslim is able to carry it out (because it has enough wealth) then he is encouraged to do aqiqah for his child when the child is still a baby. While for people who are less or unable, the implementation of aqiqah can be eliminated.

Mandatorily, according to Ahmad's historical hadith which reads “The children were pawned (resistant) with his aqiqah, slaughtered animals for him on the seventh day, shaved his head and named.” (HR Ahmad), aqiqah is mandatory. Based on the hadith above, the scholars interpret that a child cannot intercede for his parents if he has not been a qiqah. However, this opinion is still inferior to the opinion that aqiqah is sunnah so it is rejected by many scholars.
