Today Halim arrived at port city B. With a happy smile he set foot down from the ship excitedly.
He can't wait to see his wife and son. The longing for them was already at the end of Halim's head. Not stalled anymore.
After getting off the ship, he searched for a car belonging to his sister-in-law. Because, his brother-in-law is a driver who takes passengers from the port to the destination of the passengers.
Halim circulated the gaze to the entire car base which was lined up neatly.
”That's him.” Halim smiled.
He sped up his steps to get to the car. He patted the right shoulder of a man who was standing on his back by leaning against the car door while talking to a fellow driver.
The man turned around to see who had patted him on the shoulder.
”Abang, Brother is here?” said the man while tightly hugging Halim's body happily. ”How's Brother doing? I think Abang will forget Abang's hometown in a long time.”
Halim smiled back. ”Alhamdulillah, news Brother is fine. How could you forget your hometown, brother? If, your son and wife are here.”
”Oh yes, really. I forgot about it!” sahut the man. ”Let's go Brother! I'm taking Brother to kampung.”
The man did not need Halim's approval anymore, he immediately took Halim's bag from his hand and put it in the car. He went in and told Halim to come in.
”Include, Bang!”
Halim's coming in. The man immediately ran his car slowly out of the car base. After arriving at the big road, he runs his car at the speed of driving Halim to his home in the village.
”How is the state of the city, Bang? What were your activities there? Did Anton pay close attention to Brother? I mean, is Anton not arbitrary towards Abang?” He glanced at Halim for a moment and focused back on the steering wheel.
”The state of the city, well fine. The brother there sells cosmetics, Alhamdulillah, now has become a sales brother himself. And, regarding Anton, he is a good man, taking good care of the employees and being wise.” Halim saw his sister-in-law. ”Arbitrary? Of course, no! He really appreciates his employees.” explained Halim.
”Oh yes, Bang. His wife and son Brother, now living in the village, not in the garden anymore.”
The deg!
Halim looked at her sister-in-law in confusion. ”Have they lived in the village for a long time? Who brought them from the garden to the village? Is your son, wife, and brother-in-law okay?” Halim railed against her sister-in-law with a question. Halim's worried.
”Abang don't panic just yet! They lived in a new village a week ago, Brother's son and wife, are fine. But.the health condition of the mother-in-law Brother, which is not good. Last Saturday, I went to the garden. Help my in-laws harvest corn. So, I stopped by for a while in your garden. I saw that your mother-in-law was unwell, she had a cough and a fever. So, I propose to your wife, to stay in the village for a while, until your father-in-law recovers. But, while in the village, the condition of your in-laws decreases.” explained the sister-in-law.
”What's been brought to the doctor?” Halim was increasingly worried about hearing her in-laws' condition.
”Yes, two days ago. But, your mother-in-law asked to go home alone, she did not want to be treated at the hospital.”
”Why don't you want to be treated in a hospital?” ask Halim curious.
”It... because..because_”.
”Because of insufficient cost?” Halim guessed.
The sister-in-law nodded slowly to answer.
Halim sighed harshly. ”Not, Mila is very able to finance her hospital?”
The sister-in-law smiled wryly. ”Should have been. You know, how your sister-in-law that one.” he explained.
”Astaghfirullah!” Halim can only be privileged.
No more talk between them. Each one was silent with his thoughts.
From the beginning Sarmi married me, mother always wanted to come with Sarmi. Though Mila asks mom to stay with her, but mom refuses. Although Mila is the youngest child, but the mother prefers to live with Sarmi. With Sarmi, Sarmi can understand his mother's wishes. Also, Sarmi was not angry or told her mother to help with homework. He lived with Mila. However, in just two days, the mother returned with Sarmi. Is it the mother who refuses to be paid or is it Mila who does not want to finance the cost of the mother's hospital?
inner Halim.
After traveling a considerable distance, they now arrived in front of Halim's house. Halim immediately got out of the car, after he paid the cost of his car to his sister-in-law.
Although the sister-in-law refused, Halim forced her to accept. Because, it is indeed the livelihood of the sister-in-law. The brother took the money unpleasantly. After Halim came down. The sister-in-law returned to run her car, to reload the passengers.
Halim stepped into the house. The door of the house is open, but he still knocks on the door that has been opened, so that the occupants of the house know if there are people outside.
Tok tok tok tok
Halim knocked on the door with a sad face, when she saw Sarmi holding her mother. Mila and her husband, Sarmi's sister and wife, and Halim's children, all gathered in front of her to see the condition of her mother.
The knocking of the door caught all of their attention, they turned their heads. There is a sense of happiness and sadness when Halim looks into the eyes of his beloved wife. He wanted to embrace his wife's body but the situation did not justify it.
The children of Halim are very enthusiastic to see the arrival of Halim. No exception to Fatma. She sat quietly by Mila's side, her aunt.
”Hore, Papa's coming!” it's Hardin, Ita, Yuli, and Endang.
Syakila, he looked at the face of his longed father with a happy cry. He immediately scattered in Halim's arms, when Halim lowered Endang from his sling. Halim returned the hug of her son.
”Syakila misses Papa. Thank you, Papa has come, Papa did fulfill Papa's promise to Syakila. Syakila dear Papa!”
Halim smiled still hugging Syakila's body. She stroked her hair gently.
”Papa also misses you all very much.” said Halim. ”Already, don't cry! Papa always keeps Papa's promise, doesn't he?”
Syakila nodded slowly in her papa's arms. Halim releases Syakila's body. He helped wipe away Syakila's tears on her cheeks. Fatma who saw that was just indifferent.
Did my first child miss me? He was just indifferent from earlier. He really went down to his grandfather's nature. I'm not sure if he wants me to go live with him to the city.
inner Halim. He looked at Fatma who just glanced at him. Halim head bobbles.
”A-what is it Ha-Halim da-come, Na-nak?” the mother asked with a stammer and her eyes closed. His voice was very slow.
Heard the voice of his mother-in-law who asked him. Halim approached her mother-in-law. He sat next to Sarmi, the wife he had longed for. Halim took the fingers of her weak and trembling mother-in-law and held her slowly.
”Iya Ma'am, this is Halim Ma'am. Halim has come, Mother... Halim bring mom to the hospital yah.” said Halim with full softness.
”I-mom ti-it's okay. Don't take me to the hospital. Su-husband mother restraining i-mother. I_”
”Mother...mother talk what? Don't talk about things, Bu.” interrupted Sarmi with a voice that held back tears.
”Na-nak, i-mom su-have said. I-mother a-will wait for Ha-Halim da-come ba-new mother will leave quietly.” said the mother disjointedly with her weak voice.
”Bu, don't talk anymore.” Halim lifted up the body of her weak father-in-law. ”Halim will bring mom to hospital now.”
”Ti-no Nak Halim. Mother su-has been in the tu-tu-wait with su-suami mother. Mom-I'm sorry I-had rejected you. Tu-download i-ibu.”
Halim lowered her mother-in-law with a sad face. Sarmi again held the head of the mother. And I held Halim's hand.
”Jaga Sarmi well and take good care of my grandson Halim.” said the mother. At the end of his sentence also coincided with his severed life. One word that was spoken without words, a word that became the last message from the mother-in-law to Halim.
”Yes mother, Halim will take good care of Sarmi and your grandson.” whispered Halim on the body of the mother-in-law.
They let go of the mother quietly. Although they feel lost but no one cries for the departure of the mother. Not because they don't want to cry. But, the mother always tells them every day, if she leaves someday. He did not want his body to be wept, even though it was his own grandson.
They just put on their sad faces to let go of the mother. The news of her death has also been broadcast from the mosque. And, the mourners had begun to arrive, filling Halim and Sarmi's house to offer their sufferings. Not waiting long from the hour of his death, the body of the deceased was immediately bathed, in the cafeteria, in prayer right, then under in his final resting place after finishing the Ashar prayer.
After the funeral, the mourners went straight to their homes. Halim, Sarmi and the children were also sisters and brothers from Sarmi and from Halim and returned to Halim's house. Sarmi made tea for his family who were gathering. Earlier, she had brought the bag her husband had brought into the room.
”Did mom have been sick for a long time, Mama?” halim asked his wife.
”Two weeks ago mom was sick. She fainted twice in the garden. Coincidentally Papa's sister-in-law came to see us, she proposed us to stay for a while in the village. After we went to the village, my mother was immediately taken to the hospital with Papa's sister-in-law. The money that Papa sent out was used up for medical expenses. And, my mother immediately asked to go home. I don't want to be treated in the hospital anymore.” explained Sarmi.
”Why do you ask to go home while you still need treatment? Is no one able to help finance mother's treatment?” halim's gaze was fixed on Mila's sister Sarmi and her brother Sarmi.
Sarmi, Mila, and her brother Sarmi know where Halim is going. Mila and Sarmi's sister fell silent and lowered their heads. Sarmi did not want any discord between the brothers-in-law. It also melts the atmosphere.
”Mother herself who asked not to be treated again, dear.” said Sarmi. Halim looked at his wife. Sarmi shook her head when Halim saw her. ”Mommy has given up on her illness, mother often says if her husband has been waiting for her there. And I survive just to wait for your arrival, Papa.” explained Sarmi.
”Astaghfirullah! So, if Papa hadn't come today, would you have waited until Papa came? So?” Halim said she did not believe.
”Iya, that's mother's wish.” says Sarmi.
”Astaghfirullah!” Halim can only be privileged.
”We have sent a message to Beni to convey to Papa to go home first to the village. Coincidentally, Beni today left for the city of A. But, Alhamdulillah. We are happy to see Papa has come and wish my mother is granted to meet with Papa before inviting her to pick him up.” explained Sarmi again.
Halim sighed. I don't know what that means. He grabbed his tea and drank it. Seeing Halim drinking her tea, the others also took their tea.
”For the next week you sleep here, yeah. After seven days your new mother can go home to each of you.” pinta Halim to Sarmi's brother and his brother. ”If you want to go home, just enough to take turns. Sleep here.”
”Daddy, no problem.” say they are in unison.
After they finished their tea. Sarmi and Mila, her husband's sister-in-law, were in the kitchen cooking dinner. They do everything by helping each other. While Halim he gathered with other men to have a light chat about their daily lives.
Their conversation took a long time, but was not felt for those who were conversing. Hearing the voice of the Maghrib Adhan they went to pray in the mosque, while they waited for Isha prayer there and just returned home.
When they came from the mosque, dinner was already in session, in neat arrangement on the floor with a makeshift mat. And there the wives and children were sitting well waiting for their arrival to eat.
They also eat in silence and quiet. Until they finish their meal. After the meal, the women cleaned and tidied up all the dirty dishes. And sweep the floors clean and install a thin mattress for their children's beds.
Men are also looking for a position to rest. And Halim, he went into his room to rest. He's so tired. After the women finished their work, they also looked for their respective sleeping positions next to their children. While Sarmi entered the istrahat in her own room accompanying her husband.
