Laura squinted her eyes to look at the photo Luki gave her. “I think yes. I remember there was a picture of a dragon tattoo on his hand.”
“Good.” Luki smiled with satisfaction. “I'll make him pay for what he did to you. Sorry, Laura.”
“I don't understand.” Laura looked at Luki in confusion. “Why do you have to deal with the person who hit me? Let the police take care of it.”
Luki. “I have to make sure Dragon won't harm anyone else. He hit you to give me a warning. Sorry, Laura. I really feel guilty for you. Because of me you became like this.”
Laura pressed the button to raise the head of the bed. “I had an accident, Luki. Why do you have to feel guilty?”
Luki sits on Laura's bed and begins to recount the events of two weeks ago, when Dragon crashed his car outside the pub, Luki beat him up, then hit Dragon's car again.
Laura heard Luki's words without interrupting. After Luki finished explaining, Laura raised her hand to touch Luki's face. “You don't know,” he said with a gentle glance. “You didn't know that those thugs would come to take revenge on you. It wasn't your fault, Luki. I'm sure people who do evil will get their payback.”
“I can't take it. I will not be able to forgive that person, Laura,” Luki insisted.
“Hate won't make you feel better, Luki.” Laura took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. “Good. If you can't forgive him, that's your business. But, don't do anything to him. Let the authorities do it. Please, Luki. For me. Will you do this for me?”
“Right now, I can't forgive myself for harming you,” said Luki sadly.
“I forgive you,” says Laura sincerely.
“Why?” Ask Luki. “Why do you forgive me so easily?”
“The answer is simple.” Laura looked at Luki gently. “Because you're my family.
Families forgive each other. Unconditional.”
Luki smiled. “Tetap still can not make my rice taste reduced.”
Laura scolded. “So you think chasing after the guy who beat me up and beat him up will make your guilt less?”
“Maybe.” Luki shrugged her shoulders.
Laura remained silent. His eyes closed back. “If you beat up that thug,” he said slowly before taking a break. “You're just with him. As my brother, you should be better than that.”
Luki looked at Laura who was fast asleep not long after. He wrapped his sister and sat pensively thinking about the words.
THE NEXT day, Luki comes out of Laura's room and meets her stepmother. “How is Laura doing?” Ask Helen.
“It's better. He's still sleeping now. Can we talk to you for a second?” Luki hasn't had time to talk to her stepmother in person since the accident.
Helen nodded.
In the hospital cafeteria, Luki bought a cup of tea for her stepmother.
“You look tired,” said Helen worried. “You'd better get back to rest. You've been waiting for Laura all week.”
Luki. “I'm not tired. Um... I've read birthday cards written by you. Laura gave it to me the day she had an accident. Sorry, I didn't know all this time you were thinking of me too.”
Helen took a deep breath and looked at Luki, her now-grown foster child. “I don't have the courage to send it to you.”
Helen put down her tea cup. Staring at Luki softly. “I know I can never replace your mother. But, I love you like my own son.”
“That time...,” Luki's thoughts drifted to the past 25 years ago. “Actually I don't hate you. I'm really scared. If I start liking you, I'm afraid I'll forget my mom.”
“Memories of your mother will not be lost forever, Luki.”
“I know that now. You could have stayed that time. I'm just a little kid. Papa will certainly defend you. Why....why do you comply with my desire to leave?”
Helen looked at her stepson gently. “Because...before I love your papa, I love you first. I remember when we first met. You were in the park with your mom. You're three years old. You smiled at me and gave me a rose. I realized that you had taken my heart. Taking care of you is not just a job for me anymore, but my life. I love you, Luki. Maybe that was also one of the reasons why your father liked me and decided to marry me. She thinks I can be a good mom to you.”
Luki was stunned to hear Helen's words. His heart felt a deep sense of freshness. “Sorry. I caused your daughter to have an accident.” Then Luki tells how she met the person who hit Laura.
Helen just shook her head. “No. Not your fault.”
“I hurt your daughter. And you're not mad?” Tanya Luki was confused.
“I think you've punished yourself enough.” Helen touches Luki's hand slowly. “I don't blame you. I'm sure Laura doesn't blame you either. The only person who feels guilty is yourself. You have to let go of your guilt, Luki.”
“I can't.” Luki clenched her hand. “I'm too angry to let go. Just like when you weren't next to your mom when you died. I'm still mad at papa for that.”
“Oh Helen clasped Luki's fingers tightly. “Your father is abroad because he wants to find the best doctor to treat your mammary disease. He begged the best doctor to come home with him. But your father didn't expect your mammary illness to be severe. And when you get home, your dad's too late. Your mother can't be saved.”
“What?” Tanya Luki did not believe it. “Papa never told me about this. Why?”
“I think your father feels too guilty and grieves for the passing of your mother. He knows you won't accept his explanation. Your father really loved your mother, Luki. She really lost her spirit when your mom died. Concil with. Don't let your papa lose you too.”
Luki could not help but endure the sadness in her heart. Now, after 25 years, the truth of the past is revealed.
“I have to go back to Laura's room. “Helen standing from his chair. “Luki, you better not take care of her today, let me. You rest. I don't want you to fall ill.”
As Helen turned around to leave, Luki smiled. “Thank you... ma..”.
Helen turned back to Luki. “What...katamu?:
Luki stood up and approached Helen. “I said..thank you, mama. You are my mother now.”
Helen cries at Luki's confession.
Luki hugged Helen for the first time. “I'm glad you became my second mother. Papa did not choose wrong.”
Helen hugged her stepson while sobbing. “Thank you. Thank you for accepting me.”
“Now we are one family.” Luki let go of her embrace and wiped away Helen's tears, her mother now. “I'll go home and rest. Today my mother is watching. But I'll take care of you tomorrow, okay?”
“Good.” Helen smiles.
