CHAPTER 36
“Then, I won't stay with you,” comments Helen briefly.
Charles could not accept Helen's answer. “Why do you insist on asking Luki for approval?”
“Charles...., before I loved you, I loved Luki first. How can we be a family if one of us doesn't want it?”
Charles remained silent. “Alright, I'll talk about this with Luki.” “Thank you,” says Helen.
“But I don't want to stop visiting you,” said Charles suddenly.
Helen laughs. “Of course. You can come here anytime. After all, you are Laura's father. You must want to know him.”
“I won't accept that woman.” Luki looked at her papa in annoyance. “Maybe he lied. Laura's not papa's daughter. Is papa unsuspecting?”
Charles looked at his son furiously. “I know he's not lying. Why do you hate him so much? He's always been nice to you.”
Luki smiled wryly. “He Just wants your money, pa?”
“Your accusation is not true Luki,” said papa growled. “She even said she wouldn't stay with papa if you didn't agree.”
Luki smiled. “Good. I won't approve it until anytime.” “LUKI....!” Charles shouted, but Luki was out of the office.
“There's someone who wants to see you,” Maya told Laura who was working in the kitchen.
Laura asked one of her assistants to replace her and walked out of the kitchen. He saw Luki sitting at one of the tables in the corner of the restaurant. Laura came to him.
“Sit,” said Luki without looking Laura in the eye.
Laura sat down in front of Luki. “Why are you here?”
“Your mother told my father that you are his daughter,” Luki said without further ado. “I don't trust him.”
Laura looked at Luki sadly. “Why do you hate my mother so much?”
Luki replied in annoyance. “Have you ever lost a mother?”
Laura shakes. “No.”
“Then you'll never know what it's like.” Luki clasped her fingers until it turned white. “Your mother has a great way to get my father to marry her.”
“My mom loves your dad,” says Laura.
“I don't believe in his love.” Luki laughed shortly. “That's just the excuse your mother made.”
Laura understands now. “You never love someone don't you?”
“Yes. I know that,” said Laura. “But he's dead. After that you never love anyone again, do you? Your life must feel empty.”
Luki grunted softly. “You dare lecture me about my life? You know nothing about my life. I came here to offer you money.” “Hah?” Laura bungling's.
“How much money do you want so that you and your mama never see my father again?” Luki took out a check from her pocket.
Laura could not believe Luki made such an offer. “If you weren't my brother, I would have hated you right now. I don't want your money.”
“Oh...you want more money? No problem.” Luki started writing some money on her check.
“You really insulted me, Luki!” Laura looked at her brother sadly. “No amount of money in the world can replace family relationships. I'm not leaving. I want to know my father. I want to know you too.”
Luki was stunned, but then clapped her hands. “Bravo! Your words really touched me.” He did not believe a single word that came out of Laura's mouth.
Laura knows she can't convince Luki. Finally he said slowly. “You assume everything can be solved with money. A daughter's relationship with her father can't be bought with money, Luki. But, all right, you want to know how much money I want? I want half of the money you have.”
Luki tore the check in her hand. “You are really greedy.”
“If I was really greedy, I had asked for money the first time I knew I was Charles Rafael's daughter. Before you offer it to me. Think, Luki. I believe in my mother. Do a DNA test if you don't believe I'm your father's daughter. I won't turn it down.”
“Good. I will do it,” said Luki. “I don't want papa fooled. You will be contacted by my lawyer.”
“I'll look forward to it.” Laura stared back at the challenge in Luki's eyes.
The noisy atmosphere in the pub could not rival the turmoil in Luki's heart. In these few days, his life turned chaotic. All because of the presence of her stepmother and Laura. Luki looked at the people around her who were lulled by music and liquor. His mind went back to the time when he was playing with his mother at the park. Until now, at an adult age, Luki still can not accept that her birth mother is gone. His mother was the first woman he loved the most. Because papa is always busy in the office, Luki is always in living alone with mom.
Luki still remembered the softness of her hand when it touched her forehead, her warm embrace, and her smile. He also remembered when my mother's face turned pale from her illness. Although most children under five rarely remember clearly, the memory of mama has never disappeared until now from Luki's mind.
Luki had never loved another woman after that. His college days at AmErika were spent partying and changing partners. Never had a woman managed to survive with him for more than three months. He dropped out of university several times not because he did not follow the lessons, but more to make his father upset, as a punishment because when my mother died papa was abroad. And a year later, suddenly papa marries his nanny, Luki's heart breaks. Luki manages to evict her stepmother, but papa instead tries to find her stepmother. Since then, their relationship has never been harmonious.
When papa asked him to return home, Luki never paid any heed to him. Outraged, papa calls Luki a useless child who has no title. Luki challenges papa behind by entering business school at Harvard and graduating with a satisfactory predicate only to show that she can get whatever degree she wants. Unfortunately Luki won't use her title to help papa's company. It makes papa senewen. Various ways papa tried to force Luki home, but it did not work. Finally after a heart attack that made papa lie helpless in the hospital, Luki only realized she could not bear to see papa alone and immediately went home as soon as possible.
Luki decides to reconcile temporarily with papa and works at the company on condition that it is only for one year. After a year, papa won't force her to work again. Now, as recently as six months, two women have come in to ruin her life.
