The last sentence spoken by Quirinus was a mere bluff. He was not that sadistic until he dared to cut off someone else's tongue. The man wanted Annora to be scared and choose the first one so that things would be easier. His life would be quiet without the presence of a woman in his residence.
While Annora, the woman's mouth was still gaping. His expectations have drifted far, thinking that he will make a pre-wedding deal. It turned out that Quirinus' veiled request was to expel him.
“Em ...” Annora weighed in on which decision was good. He wasn't afraid of a second choice, but his family would have been excited and looked for him if he didn't come home. The first one sounds pretty interesting too. However, before that, she had to know why Quirinus gave such a deal instead of asking her to be his wife. “Why are you so afraid if the existence of your residence is known by others?”
Quirinus raised his shoulders. “I'm happy to be alone and without people knowing where I am.”
Annora nodded, understanding the man. He again thought, if you take the second choice, the sign Quirinus will be disturbed and will certainly hate it if disturbing the peace with the chaos that could have been made by his grandfather or daddy and his brothers.
“The deal was obtained from two parties. How about I choose the first one, but on condition,” pinta Annora. He still wanted to be able to meet Quirinus, though, the man without doing anything always manages to make him want to stay close and explore deeper sadness or the past that makes life look very concentrated by darkness and loneliness.
“What?”
“Let me keep coming to visit here, every once in a while. I promise I will keep your residence secret from anyone.” Although it is impossible to hide from her family because Annora only knows from her cousins. But, he would not tell that fact so as not to make Quirinus forbid it.
Chief Quirinus shook his head softly as a refusal. “Continue your life out there, live your daily life as usual.” It turns out he's not as bad as he looks. Maybe his appearance does show a jerk, but there is a good side that does not want to tie Annora in her black hole when it knows clearly that the woman expressed feelings for him.
“Do not,” said Quirinus coldly. From the beginning he always looked into Annora's eyes to show that all his decisions must be accepted without objection.
Annora frowned followed by raised eyebrows. “Do not what?”
“Don't fall in love with me.”
“Why?”
“Because I can't possibly retaliate, and you'll just waste time doing something futile. So, before it's too late and regret your decision, go.” Quirinus realized that he was such a dirty man. He did not want to bring others into his life that had been broken for a long time.
Quirinus' sentence does sound like a subtle suggestion and rejection. But, in Annora's eyes, the spotlight that aired from the man's eyes was a wave to help out from all unhappiness, silence, and darkness.
“Your life is still long, Annora. There are many men outside who deserve your love. But, not me,” Quirinus added more firmly.
“Give me a reason other than you don't believe in love and assume it's bullshit.” Annora folded both hands on the table, upholding the sit until a pair of eyes could look at each other without any hindrance. “Why do you feel unworthy of being loved?”
