Thalassemias

That morning Raffi took Aulia to Pondok Indah Hospital for a routine check of the womb. Raffi and Aulia are waiting in line at the polystyrene. After her name was called, Aulia and Raffi entered the doctor's practice room. Obstetricians perform Ultrasound on Aulia. Raffi faithfully accompanied Aulia. Suddenly the doctor scrunched his forehead while doing USG. It seems there is a problem with the content of Aulia. Aulia who noticed the behavior of the doctor was worried.

"Mom should do a blood test first to find out the amount of maternal Hb" added the doctor.

Aulia also followed the advice of doctors to perform blood tests in the laboratory. After the results came out, the doctor called Raffi and Aulia into his room.

It turns out that the doctor's diagnosis is the possibility of Aulia's baby getting thalassemia because the amount of Hb and MCV of Aulia blood is below normal and the results of the USG show symptoms of anemia in the baby such as the presence of fluid in the organs of the body, liver swelling and thickening of the placenta.

Raffi and Aulia were struck by lightning hearing the doctor's explanation.

"Thalassemia?? Can our baby's disease be cured doc?" ask Raffi.

"For further treatment, I recommend going to a fetomaternal clinic or a risky pregnancy clinic" the doctor added.

The word thalassemia had never crossed the minds of Raffi and Aulia before. Because at the beginning of pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, Aulia does not experience symptoms of morning sickness too often. Aulia can still do her filming activities. Aulia also always checks the pregnancy routine to the obstetrician. Aulia had also done a blood test before with pretty good results.

After seeking opinions to several other doctors, Raffi and Aulia finally got a reference to doctors who often handle cases of risky pregnancies by transfusing blood to the fetal umbilical cord.

After transfusion, the condition of the fetus improves with reduced fluid and increased Hb. But the baby's liver and heart are still experiencing swelling due to anemia.

In an increasingly large pregnancy, Aulia experienced swollen legs and weight gain drastically caused by lack of protein in the blood. Aulia had to be hospitalized for contracting shortly after the second transfusion. Aulia must rest in the hospital until Aulia's condition returns to normal and can perform a third transfusion.

Raffi has informed Aulia and her fetus to both her parents and in-laws who are in America. They were shocked to hear the bad news. They also booked a ticket to go back to Indonesia.

Arriving in Indonesia, they went straight to the hospital where Aulia was treated. They asked the receptionist Aulia's room number. After being told, they immediately met Aulia in her ward. Raffi faithfully accompanied Aulia in her ward.

"Aulia.." exclaimed Debby and Ms. Kania after opening the door.

"Mama.." said Aulia.

Miss Debby and Miss Kania hug Aulia in turn.

"Raffi how is Aulia? Why is it like this?" ask Mirza worriedly.

"Raffi also does not know why Pa, whereas before Lia and the content is fine. Suddenly the doctor diagnosed our baby with thalassemia" said Raffi.

After Aulia's normal state returned, they brought Aulia home.

Two weeks later, Aulia's blood pressure was so high that she was diagnosed with preeclampsia that she had to be hospitalized again. Raffi and his parents were very anxious to see Aulia's condition. And so are his two in-laws. After Aulia's condition gradually improved, Aulia was brought home.

The day after consulting a doctor and having scheduled for the next blood transfusion, Aulia was 35 weeks pregnant, suddenly Aulia had a pretty intense contraction and her water broke at home.

Raffi was very panicked and immediately fled Aulia to a hospital in the Tangerang area, which had been approved with doctors to be where Aulia gave birth. Aulia is taken directly to the IGD room for inspection. Raffi also takes care of the registration.

"Sorry sir, your wife must be operated on immediately because the water has broken. We need to get the baby out before the water dries" the doctor said.

"Do whatever doc, the important thing is that my wife and child are safe" said Raffi.

"Please sign the file sir" said one of the sisters.

"Good sus" said Raffi.

Raffi signed the file. Aulia was taken straight to the operating room. Raffi and his parents and in-laws waited outside the operating room anxiously.

"O Allah, save Lia and our baby" Raffi prayed.

A few hours later, exactly at 23:45 Aulia gave birth to a baby boy by caesarean section.

"Why can't I hear my baby's cry?" thought Aulia.

"The baby's heart is very weak. You should immediately be taken to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)" said the doctor who operated on Aulia.

Aulia was shocked to hear the doctor's words. Although Aulia hopes to do IMD (Initiation Breastfeeding Early) on the baby, but the safety of the baby is the most important. The doctor immediately took the baby to the NICU.

On the one hand Raffi, his parents, and in-laws are happy that Aulia's baby is already born, but on the other they are very anxious to see the baby's condition. Raffi also accompanied the baby while in the NICU room. Mrs Debby and Mr. Salman are waiting for Raffi and her granddaughter in front of the NICU room in dismay.

Aulia could not feel relieved because Aulia kept thinking about the condition of her baby who still had to struggle. Aulia was unable to rest properly after the surgery. Ms. Kania and Mr. Mirza did not sleep all night because they accompanied Aulia.

"You are calm, baby, you must be fine" said Ms. Kania as she clasped Aulia's hand trying to calm her daughter down.

"You are patient, baby, everything will be fine" added Mr. Mirza.

Aulia's premonition says something is happening, but Aulia keeps praying to God for her baby's safety.

"Oh my God, please save my baby. Don't let anything bad happen to her" Aulia prayed in her heart.

At about 7 am, Raffi came to the room to meet Aulia. Raffi's face looks very sad. Raffi gathered all his strength to tell Aulia the most shocking news.

"Lia, our baby..."

"Why with our baby brother?" aulia asked curiously.

"What's Raffi?" ask Mirza sir as curious.

"Our baby has died Lia... God has called him back to His side" Raffi said with tears in his eyes.

"What??" yelled Kania ma'am.

"Are you serious Raffi?" ask Mr. Mirza.

Raffi nodded his head.

"No way... My baby may not have died. She can't possibly die." exclaimed Aulia while shaking her head.

Aulia's tears fell down her cheeks. Bu Kania hugged Aulia and tried to calm her down. At that time, Kania was also very fragile. But he had to be strong to strengthen his daughter.

"We have to let her know, Lia. God loves him more. Our baby has calmed down in his paradise" Raffi added.

"No way... I don't want to lose my baby. I haven't seen him yet, brother. I haven't had time to carry it. I haven't had time to suckle her either.." cried Aulia in between her sobs.

"It's a pity that you're patient" said Ms. Kania as she gently stroked Aulia's hair. Ms. Kania was unable to hold back the tears that fell on her cheeks.

The thing that made Aulia sad was that Aulia could only see and hold her baby for the first time when the baby was already lying stiff, but her face was so peaceful as if she was sleeping soundly. Aulia also clutched and kissed the baby while crying.

"Why did God call you so soon, dear?" rintih Aulia's.

According to doctors, after birth Aulia's condition was so weak that she had to be helped with tools to survive. Seven hours after birth, the baby breathed his last. Raffi is deeply shaken when he witnesses the death of his baby with his own two eyes. Same with Mrs Debby and Mr Salman.

Mrs Debby and Mr. Salman are deeply shocked at the loss of their family's successor. In an instant God took away the happiness of their family. Now there is only sadness and tears on the faces of their families.

"Why did this all happen to our family Pa? Now everyone must be laughing at our family." Debby said in between sobs.

"Papa is also sad ma, we have lost the successor of our family" said Mr. Salman.

Mr. Salman hugged Mrs Debby who was crying.
