The last line of defense of Pendragon.
The troops and adventurers were being preoccupied by the task of shipping logistics. Some of them were currently also taking positions to keep an eye on their defensive line which was currently in a critical state. Athena, the commander of the main army of the Pendragon kingdom, was also among them. The frenzy at the campground did not stop him from keeping a close eye on the area in front of him nonstop. He and several other brave soldiers still stood tall behind the barricades and sandbags as their only protection. Hot clouds hang all day for even weeks, but that is still not enough to make them tired and want to rest. A rookie adventurer then walked up to Athena from behind silently, feeling nervous due to the extremely distant level difference between the two of them.
“P-excuse me, Madam Athena..... There's a serious situation..... Currently....”.
“Speak it, I'll listen.”
Athena did not even turn her head or anything at all, making the adventurer even more nervous. But the situation forced him to ask for help at this time. He had to say it, or all of the injured who were inside the current treatment camp would die soon.
“Our medicine...... Drug shortage...”.
Hearing that, Athena sighed. For the first time, he finally turned his head towards the adventurer, who was a girl in her 14s. From the looks of it, Athena could already tell that the girl was one of the medics of the sacred church of Pendragon. He then smiled slightly, patting his head gently.
“What's your name, son ?”
“Uh, n-name...... L-Lynio...... Sincerely to you, Madam Athena.”
“Don't call me that. Right now, I am none other than a soldier who can die at any time because of the war. Take me there.”
“T-but why ?? The holy church can no longer be used to worship the god, madam.”
“Not to worship, but that's all we can do at this time.”
Lyniette was stunned right then and there, unable to believe when she heard Athena's words. Although the point is not clearly explained by Athena, Lyniette already understood what her words meant.
“That is...... Still no help for victims until now ??”
“I'm sorry, Lyniette.”
Athena closed her eyes. That's the reality that's happening right now. Supply is very difficult to obtain, as is a rare item buried deep underground, and aid from neighboring countries has not come even to this day. The wounded victims of the colony of an unknown nation were scattered everywhere, screaming in pain and misery, not cared for at all. Houses were burned, and traces of life seemed to have been wiped off the face of the earth. All the sacrifices made by his colleagues were still not enough to bring change to this city. In the end, all they could do was maintain the only area that was still unreachable by the mysterious human race.
A few hours later, Athena and Lyniette had reached the court of the holy church. Full of wounded, that was the only sight they could see right now. Medical personnel sat next to the injured due to fatigue. Their sweat poured down their church clothes. At the very least, Athena's presence among them all managed to get those people a glimmer of hope and zeal to survive again. They shouted Athena's name, and smiles were seen back on the faces of the critically injured residents. With just her presence, Athena had kindled the spirit of the desperate people like a holy angel who had come to touch the world with her divine light.
“You are really famous, yes ??”
“That's how it is, even though I never actually expected it.”
“Why ? Isn't being famous and adored by many should be fun.”
While walking hand in hand, Athena sighed for a moment. He recalled the reason that made him famous for his toughness as he is today. It was all because of a war, which made him lose almost the entirety of his beloved family.
“Forget it. At least because of that, I can bring their smiles back like they used to be, before the city became just a mere ruin.”
Lyniette did not ask or speak again after hearing that from Athena. After walking for a long time over a long bridge filled with wounded citizens, they finally entered the altar of the church. There is only the same scene, where thousands and even millions of people lie on the floor of the sacred church that was originally used to pray to the Mahadeva.
“Saint and Saintess we're already too exhausted. Their magic energy was depleted, making almost all of them unable to use healing magic anymore. There are even some who died because of it.” said Lyniette while enduring her sadness.
The holy church had collapsed, with its dome-shaped roof having a large hole having no roof at all. Many people are cold and hot because of it. Their faith faltered, when the statue of the Mahadeva had fallen leaving only the lower body. The hopes of those who were seriously injured had disappeared, dashed into dust grains only when the entire medical personnel they had the only one also fell along with one of them. There is only death waiting, because of hunger, wound infections, and terrible diseases.
“I'm sorry, Lyniette. I am not as a commander of this kingdom.”
“Eh ? You don't need-”
“No need what ? When my colleagues and I ate a meal, they all suffered from hunger. When our wounds were bandaged well, they were left to rot to death because of it. As we slept in the camp that warmed us up at night, they, and all of you, froze and froze. Isn't that a big failure for me, Lyniette ?”
Lyniette answered nothing. In fact, he could not answer at all. What Athena said was true. Everyone suffers here. No one can laugh or be happy. No one can run around chasing and playing each other with their own feet. Everything, like being locked up in a prison of darkness, brings despair, and misery. Will one day, all Pendragon residents be free from that confinement ? Will in the distant future, their peaceful life ever return to its original state ?
“Lyniette, for the sake of you and all the citizens who are here, I will fight with all my strength and strength in that front line. For the sake of Pendragon, and his beloved people this.”
That determination will never disappear, will never fade, and will never be destroyed or extinguished. Whenever a candle loses its flame, there is always a new candle whose axis is burned by a much larger and hotter fire. That is the human determination. When one has declared his resolve, the other will also be inspired, burning with the same fire of spirit. It is like a virus that is contagious, and then it travels throughout the body.
“Madam Athena, can I request one application from you ?”
Athena turned to Lyniette, curious and confused.
“Ah, what is it ?”
With her unanimous decision, Lyniette returned Athena's gaze with a determined gaze, filled with flames of vigor that raged for the sake of her wounded companions in this holy church.
“Let me...... Come with you on the front line !!”
****************
The last line of defense of Pendragon.
“You won't believe this, Roland. We got one more favor, from a little girl.”
Athena, currently in a camp, was sitting face to face with someone named Roland. He only got a long snort from Roland, who was still laying his head on the table.
“(Sigh) At most he'll be dead not long after. Don't expect too much, Athena.”
“He will be useful, know. For back line.”
Roland slightly raised his head for a moment upon hearing Athena's words, like he had just seen a glimmer of hope.
“What ? A healer ?”
“Yups. Hence, do not be too desperate because of the war.”
Roland moved out of his chair quickly, while pounding the table. Pendragon is currently short of military strength, because the war is so terrible and claimed many lives, and only medics can solve the problem. His hopes of defeating the mysterious nation finally flared back.
“Oi, take me to the boy now !!”
“Sabar bit, motherfucker. He's been doing his job since.”
“Oh, is that so?”
Athena nodded in response. The entire spirit that grew in Roland's heart was extinguished instantly when he got an answer from Athena just now. He sighed, then took the second option.
“How many people have been able to join the war again thanks to him !?”
“You've never had patience, huh ? Not yet, but at least they won't be close to death. The amount of magic energy is also good.”
Both of them were silent for a moment, as if they were at a loss for words
“(Sigh) If you are so curious about that adventurous girl, I can take you to her. He should be resting at the moment.”
“Heh, that's the nicest thing you've ever done in my opinion.”
“Bless a day.”
And so. They both came out of the camp, and then walked alone to the new adventurous girl named Lyniette. Upon their arrival there, Roland was immediately greeted by a sight that he thought would never be possible during a war. The wounded soldiers before him joked and laughed together, and Lyniette was among them.
“Is a non-strung situation like this really allowed in the middle of a war, Athens ?”
“I told you he's passable, stupid.”
“You call it good ? He was the same as a delivery from the gods, stupid.”
Lyniette ran over to Athena and Roland. A small smile could be clearly seen on his face. Honestly speaking, Roland had never seen those soldiers who were in the middle of a battle as cheerful as it was today.
“How do you feel here, Lyniette ?”
“Everyone here is fun, I might even be able to stay here until the war is over even !”
The world seemed to change like a fantasy for Roland. A war that shouldn't be like this. The adventurous girl named Lyniette was too naive for such a cruel thing as war in this world. Roland did not know whether he should tell the truth or not.
Suddenly, one of the soldiers watching the defensive line stopped at the doorway, panting after running quite far from there. His shocking arrival was immediately greeted with the gaze of not only Athena, Roland, and Lyniette, but the entire wounded soldier as well.
“What's up?” ask Athena.
The face of the soldier looked very frightened, like he had just seen a ghost or a beast that could not be tamed. Athena and Roland both frowned. Both of them knew clearly that something bad was going on there.
“Those star people........ They're trying to break through our barricade!!”
“Cih, dammit...”.
...****************...
A few minutes later, at the last line of defense of the city of Pendragon.
Once Athena and Roland had arrived there, there was already no more encampment. People were already running forward storming something they could not attack, attacking something they could not attack. Once again, the scene in the battle reappeared in Roland's mind.
“For !!! Hit the heads of those damn apes!!!” one of the captains among them.
“Roland, what should we do ?”
“You asked !? Of course attack that strange flying object along with the others, stupid !!”
“It was too sloppy, know !! They need us, and if we both die as well, who will lead the rest of the others!!?”
Roland turned his head towards Athena, accompanied by an explosion not far from where he stood. His mind was immediately enlightened by Athena.
“What you said is true too. In that case, we infiltrate into the strange flying object.”
“Indeed it sounds very difficult, or even almost impossible to do. Anyway, we'll still do it for Pendragon, won't ?”
“Yeah, for Pendragon !!”
Roland raised his sword, then came running forward along with the mighty and brave warrior, followed by Athena who was behind him. The entire eyes of the soldiers were fixed on Roland and Athena instantly, as if pulled by the force of gravity that forced them to look towards the two people. A captain who was currently hiding behind a pile of sandbags stood up quickly at that very instant, shouting loudly encouraged those desperate to defeat the unstoppable monster before them, who wanted to colonize their land in full force.
“Commander Athena and Roland are with us !! Go ahead, and go on a rampage !! We will be invincible at this time !!”
“Unbeatable !!” pay back the other soldiers.
A naive declaration indeed, equating two human beings on par with a god. But that was all they had right now, just a belief that they were truly capable of defeating something that was born as invincible. The soldiers ran non-stop, crashing through various kinds of explosions, bursts of flames, and thousands of barrages of bullets from above the sky. Their enemy's attack, just like an unstoppable divine punishment. No one can hide from him, and no one will be able to survive him. With no enemy in sight to walk the ground, Athena intends to take down one of the starships with her unparalleled spear throw, but the intention was instantly destroyed when he was devoured by a huge explosion together with Roland and the other heroes.
Meanwhile, in the back line of the battleground.
“What do we do now ?”
“We're people who've been disabled, man. It is impossible to join the war.”
The wounded soldiers being treated by Lyniette were currently discussing with each other, asking if they should help the others on the front line there, or stay here as a bunch of people who can't afford it and wait until death comes to pick up. The hustle and bustle inside the dilapidated building paid no attention to Lyniette at all, who was currently trying to calm them all down. Lyniette was like a ghost among the original humans of today. Ignored in the magical world, no one cared about him at all.
“What are we doing here actually ? Waiting to die and letting the dogs touch our holy church !? I won't let that happen for sure !!”
“Everything feels so too, asshole !! Lyniette, let us beat those fucking asses right now!!”
“Wait a minute!!”
As the wounded soldiers stood up and began to retrieve their weaponry, Lyniette stood in front of them, trying to prevent them from getting out of the care camp in the meantime.
“I will not let you do this stupid thing with your condition like that ! You might even die, stupid !!”
A soldier with a bandage wrapped around his left shoulder patted Lyniette on the shoulder, then looked at her with a serious look.
“Lyniette, we soldiers from all over Pendragon would rather die than see this sacred land touched by those greedy bastard dogs.”
The words from the soldier actually pierced Lyniette's heart. Was he not strong enough to save their precious life ? To be sure, he would not let the mighty soldiers around him currently die on the battlefield and not get a proper burial. He will not allow their families to experience great loss and be confined to a grief that lasts forever. He wants to save everyone around him right now. Even if he died, at least he saw the others survive.
“Lin Chen, you and half, go and protect the holy church. While me and the rest, we'll try to slow those jerks down.”
“I understand. Do it soon !”
Lyniette is surrounded by thousands of great people today. He was burned by inspiration thanks to all of them. He wanted to be just like them, but what he was holding right now was just a magic wand that had one purpose, which was to heal someone's wounds. Would losing fear like them make him equal to them ?
“Wait a minute, all of you....”.
“What's up, Lyniette ? Isn't it obvious-”
“Not about that anymore !! Sigurdr, let me come with you..”.
Sigurdr, the soldier whose left shoulder was bandaged, was surprised by what Lyniette said, as well as the rest of the army. To make it look more convincing, Lyniette held her magic wand with two hands, grasping it very tightly.
“Front line is not like this place, Lyniette. It was a dangerous place-”
“I already know clearly, stupid !! There are a lot of people who lost their lives, right !? There's no such thing as a break at all, isn't there !? That's why I'm with you, to reduce the casualties !! Why can't I be stubborn like you guys !? Isn't that unfair at all !? Why !!?”
Everything was made silent, except for Lin Chen who approached Lyniette and patted her two shoulders with a sigh. Lin Chen gave a small smile to him, looking like someone who was unwilling to lose something precious in his life.
“Because we are just a small army, while you are a holy angel for this city. Lyniette, this town needs someone like you. You, are the future and the only hope for all of us.”
Lin Chen then turned his head towards Sigurdr.
“Brother, fight for Pendragon, and our holy angel.”
“Of course. I will do with pleasure, even if I have to die even in the middle of the battlefield.” replied Sigurdr accompanied by a nod.
In the end, Lyniette arrived at the holy church along with the entourage led by Lin Chen, and had to part with Sigurdr and the others. The people who were being treated there were confused by their presence.
“What is this ? Shouldn't they be on the defensive line ? Why did they come here ?”
“I heard that the people from the star attacked back, but sent out wounded soldiers ? Isn't that already too much ?”
But the soldiers did not heed the whispers of the citizens at all. They all kept doing their duty as they agreed during the journey to this holy church.
“Lyniette, get inside the church and start treating those who are seriously injured as you normally do. There is no other way out in this church, so we must endure as long as possible if only the worst happened and befall us now.”
“No, I'll stay here with you guys !”
“That's dangerous, Lyniette.”
“And that's why I'm with you guys !!”
Lin Chen sighed, and was eventually forced to let Lyniette be together with them on the church bridge. Several soldiers were deployed by Lin Chen to move the remaining people outside into the holy church. Many of the Saintesses rejected them because the holy church was overcrowded and overcrowded, but the soldiers still whistled loudly to secure the rest of the Pendragon citizens into the holy church. From a distance, Lyniette looked at the fight with deep sadness. In fact, Pendragon was not a city like this in the beginning.
“Lin Chen, I saw a strange flying object from the east ! IT IS THE ENEMY !!!” exclaimed a soldier carrying a binocular.
“Cih, dammit. Everyone, hold fast to your faith !! Fight like a man, and go on a rampage !! Get those dogs out of this sacred land with swords and spears, and purify the remnants of their disgust with our magic !! Everyone, come with me!!!”
In Lin Chen's lead, all the soldiers advanced against the space ships that were in the air. Their swords and spears were stretched out into the sky, as if against the divine will. Among them is Lyniette, who is at a loss for what to do when she is in danger. Explosion after explosion rumbled in front of the holy church, casting terror of fear for anyone who heard it. They ran among the ruins of the building, proof that the splendor of Pendragon once lived on this land. The barrage of bullets that killed their comrades did not shake the hearts of the other soldiers. Instead, their anger was growing.
It was here that Lyniette witnessed the heinous reality of the battlefield. Shouts of pain and declarations of vengeance, were heard everywhere. His eyes saw everyone who had become friends in the dilapidated old building being destroyed by the explosion. Losing his limbs, losing consciousness, and also losing hope. Only the most stubborn among them, still decided to go forward to attack something they could not reach in the air. Lyniette ran all over the soldiers she saw being attacked. None of them were sane when they survived the attack. There was nothing flawed after the flesh on their bodies was used as a bullet platform for the space ships. For them, death is far better than misery.
“Ajax, survive !!” lyniette exclaimed as she toppled a soldier named Ajax before her.
The soldier gasped for breath, trying to breathe normally but could not. His voice was hoarse, after he swallowed the mixture directly between the ground and gunpowder due to the explosion that blew it. He let both his hands droop on the ground, really wanting to forget what it was like to hold a sword that was originally one part of his pride living in this world. He just wanted to rest, while watching the last part of the holy city of Pendragon being crushed by an unknown superior force.
“Lyniette...... Lyniette, listen to me....... No, heal me....... I have no hope here...”.
“Do not think like that, stupid !! How about your family !?”
“It is better to kill someone who is tormented, than to give him a second chance only to make him more tormented again afterwards. That's what the people here have always held...... Perhaps, my family would rather see me die and rest in peace in the grave, than see me live a second life as a disabled and useless person.”.
Ajax then took a dagger from his pocket, after which put the dagger into Lyniette's hands. He flashed his last little smile to Lyniette, and looked at her with white eyeballs indicating that he had been blinded by the fatal attack.
“Ending my suffering with it, Lyniette....... Giveme...... A painless death...”.
It was only Ajax's last wish, so Lyniette was forced to do so. After chanting 'apologize' many times, Lyniette raised the dagger given by Ajax, while staring at his last smile that would soon be lost due to his own hands.
“Sorry...... Ii'm sorry...... Ajax !!”
A splash of blood just came out of Ajax's body, as the dagger was thrust into his chest by Lyniette. His eyes widened, as if he could not believe that he had just done this. He came to this battlefield to save more lives, but the opposite happened. It ends the life of someone.
“There is more........ There is still something to be saved here...”.
Lyniette stood up quickly at the time, hoping that she could save more lives than she lost, yet what she saw was so shocking to her. The soldiers who originally had that burning determination, including Lin Chen, were now standing still between the gunpowder blast and the barrage of bullets, not wanting to attack again. Some spread out both hands, surrendering themselves completely to death. Some took hiding places and sat resting behind it, and some were just dragging their swords in exhaustion. Desperation has come upon them once more.
In the end, all the brave soldiers were crushed to nothing by a terrible explosion. Lyniette survived the blast, but was alone. As soon as he woke up the dawn light was breaking, blinding his light yellow eyes. He looked back, and there were only remnants from the holy church there. He finally felt what the soldiers felt.
“I...... Not saving anyone...”.
While dragging her magic wand, Lyniette walked towards a barricade that had been flattened along with the ground. Below him, was a trench, where Lin Chen's body was thrown and lying lifelessly stiff. Lyniette went down the trench, turned back, then sat still, observing the orange-red afternoon sky above. He knew that he could not survive or change this situation with just his magic wand. So he just sat in silence, in eternal despair.
“Fetch me, o eternal death....”.
At least, his last wish was answered by the Mahadeva. The sound of footsteps approached him, and some people in strange clothes he had never seen pointed their guns at him. Lyniette smiled slightly. The fear no longer flowed in his veins, it had already disappeared a long time ago.
“Kill me, dogs of the stars...”.
At that moment, a gunshot rang out, ending his life. At least, Lyniette can rest in peace, along with her friends.
O lost sheep, why do you struggle only with your own strength ?
Give up your body, and you will have as much strength as a male lion. The fangs were as sharp as the fangs of the forest wolf, and the eyes were as beautiful as the eyes of an eagle.
Just...... Give your mortal flesh, to us.....
