It is often understood by Muslims that what is meant by amil zakat is the caretaker of zakat or zakat committee that exists today in mosques or in the form of business entities. This kind of understanding actually needs to be straightened out. Because amil zakat is actually not like that. Try to look carefully at the following reviews.


‘AMIL IN ARABIC MEANS WORKER


While the term means the person who is given the task to take care of zakat and collect it from people who are entitled to issue zakat, then he will distribute it to the group who is entitled to receive, and then he will distribute it to the group who is entitled to receive, and he was given authority by the ruler to take care of the zakat. Sayid Sabiq said, “Amil zakat are people who are appointed by the ruler or vice ruler to work to collect zakat from rich people. Including amil zakat is the person in charge of guarding the property of zakat, zakat cattle herder and clerk who works in the office of amil zakat.” [Fiqh Sunnah, published by Dar al Fikr Beirut, 1/327]*_


‘Adil bin Yusuf al ‘Azazi said,“That is meant by amil zakat are officers sent by the ruler to collect zakat from people who are obliged to pay zakat. Similarly, amil is the one who keeps the zakat as well as the one who divides and distributes the zakat to those who deserve it. Those are the ones who deserve to be given zakat even though they are actually rich people.” Tamamul Minnah fi Fiqh al Kitab wa Shahh al Sunnah, Sheikh Muhammad Nashiruddin Al Albani, published by Muassasah Qurthubah Egypt, 2/290]


Sheikh Muhammad bin Sholih Al ‘Utsaimin said ,“The third group entitled to get zakat is amil zakat. Amil zakat are people appointed by the ruler to take zakat from those who are obliged to pay it and then maintain and distribute it. They are given zakat according to their work rate even though they are actually rich people. While ordinary people who become representatives of people who commit zakat to distribute zakat does not include amil zakat. So that they are not entitled to any zakat property due to their status as representatives. But if they willingly distribute zakat to those who deserve it with trust and earnestness then they also get the reward. But if they ask for wages because they have distributed zakat then the person who zakat is obliged to give him a wage from his other property not from zakat.” *[Majalis Shahri Ramadan, Shaykh Muhammad bin Sholih Al ‘Utsaimin, cet Darul Hadith Cairo, pp. 163-164]*_


Based on the above exposure, it is clear that the condition in order to be referred to as amil zakat is appointed and given authority by the Muslim rulers to take zakat and distribute it so that the zakat committees in various mosques as well as those who elevate themselves as amils are not amils outright’i. This is in accordance with the term amil because the so-called amil is a worker employed by a particular party.


Having authority to take and collect zakat is an inevitability for amil because amil has an obligation to take zakat by force from those who refuse to pay zakat.


"Simply, the condition is called ‘amil zakat that there are two Fa." Fauzi.

With these two conditions, please all readers judge for themselves whether the zakat committee in the mosques deserves to be called ‘amil zakat. If not, then of course they do not get a percentage of zakat. If they are only a committee, then it is only social work, and they may be rewarded for their good deeds.
