CHAPTER 23: THE STATE OF THE CITY

Myro is now sitting in the living room of the mayor's office called the town hall, where Myro will live and work from now on.

As the most luxurious house and the only place made of stone, this house has several decorations such as chairs, tables or other items that are quite feasible to live in.

Myro sat in the living room with Lokof, Charles and Kanson standing behind him. After all this house was very limited which made most of Myro troops create a camp next to the city which is an open field. As a city like a village, of course, the End City did not have any barracks that made the Myro troops need to build a tent until the time has not been determined.

The door of the living room opened, Kanko's figure was seen carrying several glasses and a teapot that had a lot of drinks.

Putting his glass in front of Myro, Kanko started pouring tea and then gave each of the warm tea glasses to the people standing behind Myro.

Other than Myro, everyone in the room stood up. After all his identity was there, he was a prince so people did not dare to carelessly sit with Myro.

After finishing pouring the tea, Kanko stood respectfully in front of Myro, waiting for his next order.

Myro drank tea that was almost no sweetness at all because of the expensive sugar, then put the glass "Uncle Kanko, can you explain the situation of the End City and the surrounding region to us?".

Kanko bowed in fear "Prince, I as the loyal servant of the kingdom will definitely report all the trouble here to you! Besides, the prince does not need to call me uncle who is too polite, just call me Kanko directly or the old servant! It can help a warmer become a great fortune for this old servant".

Myro waved his hand "My prince's title is just an empty title, with no power or strength so you don't have to overdo it. Moreover, you have been faithfully guarding the Later City for the kingdom for so many years, even if you do not flee due to fear of the barbarian army's attack, I appreciate all the loyalty you have. Therefore, calling you uncle is something that is true, not to mention your age is also older than me. We're going back to our main conversation, how are things here?".

Hearing Myro's words, Kanko almost cried. He always worked hard and was loyal to the kingdom, even though sent to a wasted city, Kanko left without a doubt to the Late City which was very risky for his life.

However, all his loyalty was never appreciated, many people underestimated him who did not have any important position in the kingdom at all.

For that reason, he was truly touched by Myro who did not underestimate him, even appreciating all the loyalty he had carried out so far.

Kanko took a breath and there was determination in his eyes, no matter whether Myro managed to develop the City of End or failed, he was determined to help the person who appreciated his hard work to the end.

"Many people who had been appointed the ruler of this city then tried to develop the Late City, but they all ended up failing and fled to other big cities, they surrendered. Due to the shortage of food every year, many residents sold their children to merchants from the Frave Kingdom as slaves".

"Slave?" said Myro grimly.

"True, prince", said Kanko nodding "They think rather than starve to death here, it is better to let their child become a slave. Besides they could earn money, their son generally accepted food as a slave. Even though the slave life was really bad, at least they stayed alive".

Myro remained gloomy then continued saying "Why does the Frave Kingdom continue to accept slaves from the Late City? They can look for it from somewhere else, right? After all the people in other cities have nothing unique".

Kanko said bitterly "Master may not have known, the Kingdom of the Frave has another name that is well known to the people in the region around them, one of which is the Province of Atrof which they are nicknamed the kingdom of slaves. They would buy all the slaves sold either from their own territory or other kingdoms without hesitation, then the merchants sold them to the government as labor or sold them to the population and nobles for some reason".

Myro became interested through Kanko's explanation just now "Slave kingdom? How many slaves do they have?".

"I don't know the exact number, but based on the words of some passing Frave Kingdom merchants, 70% of the people in the Frave Kingdom are slaves?", replied Kanko.

"Are they crazy?" said Charles, who finally spoke up, "The number of slaves they have is more than their own population!".

Kanko also said confusedly "I am less aware of the authenticity of this news because I know it only through the merchants of the Frave Kingdom passing by to search for slaves in the Golden Guardian Kingdom".

Myro asked again "How could the merchant possibly cross the border? Are there no soldiers there? Even if they made it through the soldiers, I heard that many merchants refused to pass through the Atroph Province especially the area around here which was close to the mountains of the bandits' headquarters. Have the merchants of the Atrof Kingdom never been attacked by bandits? Why would they dare to come here?".

Kanko continued to explain "Prince, bypassing the border warrior's surveillance was an easy matter as long as they paid enough money and did not make a big deal in Golden Guardian Kingdom then the border guards would let them pass through the secret passageway which was been prepared. As for the bandits, they only dared to attack the small merchants. Generally all the Frave Kingdom merchants who came were large merchant groups with many expert guards, the bandits did not dare to attack the great merchants who had many escorts".

Myro closed his eyes for a while, he thought for a while "So you mean the End City is really a dead city with no resources that can develop a city, no city can develop, even the residents sell their own families to survive the famine. I, a prince without support given the power to manage a city that looks almost dead, am I right?".

Kanko broke out in a cold sweat, fearing that Myro might get angry and attack him. Despite his fear, Kanko nevertheless emboldened himself "It is strange to send a prince to a city like this that has no hope of flourishing, but in reality it is because the noble himself decided to send the prince here".
