Feeling Stupid

The medium-bodied and bespectacled woman in gold-framed braces smiled awkwardly and repeatedly bowed to apologize.

"This is Dr. Andina, Mr ...." The ER doctor ignored Andina's apology, instead introducing Andina to Darren who was still struggling confused by this situation. His head was spinning in anxiety while these two people were like they were saying that everything was fine. Here, he needs clarity on his wife's fate.

"Doctor, you should immediately check on Miss Jenny, let me accompany her," he ordered Andina's doctor who was about to extend a hand when Darren intended to introduce himself, but urgently, and his hand was immediately pulled back. His faded smile changed with a serious expression. He bowed and sighed to release the burden that had been billowing on his chest.

Trials always come even if it's only been a week of work.

"Come, sir." The guard doctor invited Darren who was still standing tensely to follow the two of them.

Darren's mind was blank, he caught only a glimpse of what the doctors and nurses had asked him. Every now and then he nods and says 'do my best for my wife' whenever the doctor asks for consideration. How bad is his wife's illness? Then she saw Jen get her blood drawn, her faint ears catching TORCH or something. For a moment he became stupid and dazed, in his mind there was only a pale and weak Jen lying still. Looking at the many tests that were done, only bad thoughts flashed across the man's head.

Was that all you've been sick, honey?

"Mr ...."

A voice that sounded from behind, resuscitated him from the daydream. He turned his head and found a female doctor who gave a friendly smile full of consolation. "Calm down, Mr ... Miss is okay! Mostly because he's too tired."

Darren thinned his lips and lowered his head. "Yes, it's my fault completely, Doctor .. I don't pay attention to my wife and busy myself."

"Em .. I don't blame you, Mr. .. but I just want to ask you one thing."

Darren turned his head and found Andina smiling at him. "Didn't Miss have nausea or vomiting?"

"Is he seriously ill, Doc?"

Andina chuckles. "Yes, it's terrible and it's you!"

Darren widened his eyes with his breathing pausing for a moment. "S-my?" His eyes pointed at himself. Again because of him?

Was I just a disaster for Jen?

"Yes, because your actions caused Miss Jen to have a fetus in her stomach. And you don't know, it's really outrageous!"

Tik .. tik .. tik ....

"My wife is pregnant, Doc?" tanyanya.

Andina gasped as Darren's hands grabbed her arms, shaking Andina's body until the woman's glasses sagged to the tip of her nose. Darren smiled widely until his teeth were all visible. Really Andina was afraid to see the expression of horror— despite looking happy, from the prospective father.

However, that happiness didn't last long as Andina explained in more detail what happened to Jen. Jen was apparently exposed to toxoplasmosis which contaminates her almost simultaneously with her pregnancy. And Darren was so shocked when one by one the reason for Jen's exposure to the virus was explained by Andina.

"We don't own cats, but our sister's cats are often kept at home. Could that be the cause as well?"

Andina nodded. "Yes, it could be, Mr. .. but not only that, maybe Miss likes to eat processed meat cooked half-cooked or raw."

Darren nodded weakly and unconsciously he muttered. "Yes, he used to love sushi, satay, and half-cooked steak ...." Darren looked at Doctor Andina sharply and seriously then. "He liked to eat that food a long time ago, Doc...does that matter now?"

"It should not, if it has been more than nine months exposed, the body usually already has immunity or antibodies to this virus. I'm sure, Miss Jen has only been exposed since she was pregnant." He handed a paper containing the results of tests on the virus.

"Because Miss Jen is unconscious, we can't yet estimate exactly how old she is. After the youth awaken later, I will check again, Sir. There will be further tests related to this."

Darren doesn't understand what's on the paper, but Jen and her son are in danger now.

Please, let nothing happen to them, Lord!

Darren threw his body on the back of the chair. His whole body feels numb. Just been happy, there is already something that makes all the chaos is not left.
