“Is in this class named Hanz?” ask a man.
The lecturer who was giving a lecture gasped because the man rushed into the class without permission first.
Hanz. All eyes were on Hanz.
“Please come with me and go straight to Professor Alexander's room. Very important.”
The semester break for more than two months of that time, during which campus activity somewhat slackened, was exploited by a group of hackers who accidentally broke into campus servers to steal entrance test exam data. After the lecture in the new school year has lasted for several days, then it is realized by the campus.
The question along with the answer to the ETH entrance exam is then traded on a banned site that is rarely touched by people in general, on the darknet. Not just anyone can access it.
Upon arrival in Professor Alexander's room, Hanz, the student who was considered sad for people who had just known him, also spoke four eyes. Please note that Professor Alexander is one of the professors who are very skilled in science and IT.
“I'm sorry Prof,” said Hanz rather weakly, but trying to re-enforce the shoulder.
Professor Alexander fixed the position of his glasses, then sat down with Hanz. He sighed for a moment, then said, “One hundred and fifty S1 students and twenty S2 students. They graduated after buying questions and answers from the perpetrator.”
Hanz closed his eyes while taking a deep breath, his chest puffed up, then exhaled slowly. There was regret and guilt in his heart, impressed that he had failed. “Just yesterday's holiday time I was too busy. So don't check for work in ETH. I'm sorry, Prof.”
After completing his undergraduate degree, Hanz and Avraam enjoyed a long vacation, completely giving up everything related to college or other assignments. Full two months they spent enjoying a hobby that is very rarely favored by many people, namely shooting.
“We on campus, especially I as the person who plays a central role in the security system, can not at all blame you, Hanz. This problem occurs purely because of our carelessness.”
Hanz held his head up, looking into Professor Alexander's eyes, he replied, “Prof, I am among the people responsible for everything related to cybersecurity in ETH. If I am negligent, it means I am not confident in running the task.”
Professor Alexander, who was over fifty years old, advanced his chair, and replied, “You are not negligent at all in carrying out the task, Hanz. What we're saying is to invite you suddenly is for us to take swift action. It is feared the perpetrator will act again.”
However, there was still a regret on Hanz's face. “For two months I did not open a computer at home. During that time I did not check and control the system. I'm sorry, Prof.”
Although Professor Alexander repeatedly said that Hanz was innocent, Hanz was still devastated by the incident. Over the past four years, if there was a problem related to cyber-security and and anything related to IT, Hanz quickly overcome it and no significant adverse effects befall ETH. All is safe under control.
Therefore, when the campus reported that there had been data theft, especially the stolen data is valuable confidential data, Hanz felt failed in carrying out the task. Professor Alexander said the campus needed Hanz's help.
“So we have to immediately find the thief, as well as any of our students who have purchased these data.”
Flipping through the sheets of documents on his desk, Professor Alexander said, “We suggest you stop working at the cafe, Hanz. And we beg you, take the money from the campus. How else can we repay your services?”
“Work, it's purely my personal affair, it has nothing to do with my lectures and assignments now. Money giving from ETH, sorry I can not accept it, the facilities that have been given are all more than enough.”
Professor Alexander was dumbfounded to hear it. Hanz instead wants to spend hours in a cafe by serving people, then get a very small wage.
If Hanz wants to receive monthly money from ETH, that money is ten times the amount of income earned from cafes. Strangely, though, Hanz thought the reverse. Even Professor Alexander's classmates still do not understand what Hanz is trying to achieve by working in a cafe.
Hanz continued, “What I have done and will do in ETH, solely for campus, Prof. Let me have some memories and services here. After all, too much kindness and benefit I get from college, rather than the little things I've done.”
About four years ago, in the early days of S1, ETH was stirred by a cyber criminal. The case is that the man attacked the ETH security system, leaving all existing networks completely dead, unable to operate. The lecture schedule was set for one week.
At a time when some people are tired but there is no action, especially new students, strangely there is a young man aged approximately seventeen years offered in an effort to overcome the problem.
His presence was considered trivial because he was a student of chemical engineering. It has nothing to do with IT. However, the campus at that time saw his sincerity and courage, not from the background.
With experience watching hacker films and IT books that have been read, Hanz entered the team in handling the case with experts. Hanz learned lightning IT issues and the ethical hacking world with colleagues there.
Amazingly, within a few hours Hanz was able to master the intricacies of hacking. Although it was doubtful because there was no experience at all in investigating a case, Hanz at that time even became a hero.
Hanz uncovers who the perpetrator is and what the motive of the case is. He said the perpetrator was a student from one of the private campuses in Switzerland. For the perpetrator of the forbidden act is a reason for jealousy.
During this time ETH is always better when compared to any campus in Switzerland and ETH can always compete with the world's big campuses such as, Oxford, Harvard, and others. Jealousy and hatred are the basic motives.
Then, the perpetrator who had failed the ETH entrance exam, then vent all his frustration even though his actions were very dangerous for himself. Lightly, it did not take long the perpetrator was immediately snatched.
Well, since then the name Hanz is taken into account by ETH. Until now, over a period of about four years, Hanz continues to hone his cyber skills, learning with one of his expert friends, he said, then learn self-taught at home with all the facilities provided by ETH.
Professor saw Hanz's face straight-up, “If you need a team, we'll find him soon, Hanz.”
Hanz forced a smile. “No need, Prof. Let me work alone this time.”
Yeah, let Hanz work. But later, after she attends a special event, an invitation from Mr. Dmitry Fadeyka, her own biological father.
