Ma’asyiral Muslimin rahimakumullah,

From the top of the pulpit I convey to all of us, especially to myself personally, to always try to improve the quality of faith and piety to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala by carrying out all obligations and abstaining from all that is forbidden.

The Muslimin rahimakumullah,

On this glorious occasion at noon, I will deliver the sermon with the theme: “Fear Rich, Do Not Fear Poor!”.

Khutbah I

Ma’asyiral Muslimin rahimakumullah,

From the top of the pulpit I convey to all of us, especially to myself personally, to always try to improve the quality of faith and piety to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala by carrying out all obligations and abstaining from all that is forbidden.

Rahimakumullah,

Beginning this sermon, I will read the meaning of the two verses I read in the preamble to the sermon above.

The meaning of these two verses is:

“Made to feel beautiful in the view of human love towards what is desired, in the form of women, children, possessions piled in the form of gold and silver, selected horses, livestock and field paddy. That is the pleasure of living in the world, and for God is the good place to return. Say, “Will I tell you what is better than that?” For those who fear is available to them gardens beneath which rivers flow, they abide therein for ever, and holy couples, and the pleasure of Allah. And Allah is All-Seeing His servants.” (QS Ali ‘Imran: 14-15)

Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said:

Meaning: “Good treasure belongs to someone who shalih” (Mentioned by al Haitsami in Zawa’id Ibn Hibban).

Meaning, the lawful property which a Muslim uses and spends on the path of Allah ta’ala and intended to fulfill the rights of Allah is the great favor which He bestows upon his believing servant.

Ma’asyiral Muslimin rahimakumullah,

Narrated from friends ‘Amr bin ‘Auf al-Anshari radhiyallahu ‘anhu that Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam sent friend Abu ‘Ubaidah bin Jarrah radhiyallahu ‘anhu to Bahrain to take the property of jizya. Then Abu ‘Ubaidah returned to Medina with property from Bahrain. The arrival of Abu ‘Ubaidah was heard by the Anshar people coinciding with the prayer of Shahuh with the Prophet Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. After praying, he immediately left but they crowded around him.

The apostle of Allah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam smiled looking at them as he said: “I guess you have heard that Abu ‘Ubaidah has arrived with something.”

They said: “True O Messenger of Allah.”

He then said: “Be happy and aspire to what can make you happy.”

He continued his word:

“For the sake of Allah, it is not the fakery that I worry about you. But what I fear about you is that you have been given the treasures of the world as they were laid out to the people before you. Then you compete for it as they compete for it so that the treasures of the world destroy you as they have destroyed them.” (HR al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Rahimakumullah,

In general, a father at the end of his life will be very worried about poverty in his children. But not with Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. Like a father to his people, he was not at all concerned about poverty and fakery to his people. And he loved his people very much. What he was worried about was the opposite. The Prophet feared for the wealth and the spaciousness of the wealth of his people.   Al-Hafidz Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalani in Fath al-Bari explains that it is due to the harm of fakiran lighter than the harm of wealth. The danger posed by fidelity is generally related to the world. The danger of wealth is usually related to religion. Disbelief in religion is obviously heavier than worldly harm.

Ma’asyiral Muslimin rahimakumullah,

Rahimakumullah,

If we look carefully, both poverty and wealth, both can be a source of slander and disaster. But on the other hand can also be a source of benefit and a field of reward. It depends on how someone handles and deals with it.   For some rich people, wealth is a source of disaster and slander that drains sin for them. With the wealth they had, they boasted in front of others. And some rich people use their wealth to do good and gather supplies for eternal life in the afterlife.   So too with fakiran. Some people when they are afflicted by fear, they steal and commit other sinful acts. For them, fear becomes the cause of their misery in the Hereafter. On the contrary, some people face their fears with patience. It is this nature of patience that curbs their appetite not to do the things that are forbidden. For them this is what evil befalls us in the Hereafter and becomes a field of reward.

Ma’asyiral Muslimin rahimakumullah,

Most of the prophets and guardians were poor people. Very few of them are endowed with wealth by Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.

Even the Messenger of Allah informs us that the majority of the inhabitants of heaven are indigent in his word:

It means: “I see in heaven, and I see most of the inhabitants are fakir” people (HR al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam also said:

Meaning: “The indigent among the Muhajirin will enter heaven first before the rich among them by a time difference of 70 years” (HR Abu Nu’aim in Hilyah al-Auliya’).

Rahimakumullah,

If a person is made a fakir, let him imitate the friend of Abu Hurairah whose poverty does not make him weak in gaining knowledge to the Prophet and attending assemblies of knowledge. In fact, he was the Prophet's friend who most narrated the hadith. So poor was Abu Hurairah, that he once fainted from hunger. So is Uwais bin ‘Amir al-Qarani which is the best tabiin. So poor that his desire to meet and learn directly from the Prophet was not fulfilled. He lived with the Prophet. He was in Yemen and the Prophet in Medina. For his service to his birth mother and his deep love and longing for the Messenger of Allah, by revelation from Allah.

The Prophet said:

Meaning: “Truly the best tabiin is a man named Uwais bin ‘Amir from the tribe of Murad then call Qaran” (HR Muslim)

Ma’asyiral Muslimin rahimakumullah,

If a person is made rich, let him imitate the companions of the Prophet who are abundant in wealth such as the friend of Abu Bakr and the friend of ‘Utsman bin ‘Affan radhiyallahu ‘anhuma. His second treasure was infused in the way of Allah to sustain the development of Islamic proselytism.   Finally, we reiterate that Islam does not prohibit anyone from becoming rich. What is forbidden is to use wealth in matters prohibited by religion.

The Jama'at’ah prayer Jum’at rahimakumullah, Thus the brief sermon during this blessed day.

May it be useful and bring barakah for all of us. Amens.
