Jane was clearly confused as to how to explain it. He then purposely hugged Xavier's body tightly, and switched their conversation.

“I'm happy, we can do it,” he said slowly.

This made Xavier smile. She was delighted that Vanessa finally began to open up to him, and was no longer as cold as before.
