Ten years ago, one winter night, a blizzard struck the fortress of the Free Smith Guild. The Church of Light purifies every Free Smith led by Terizla of the accusations against the Abyss, leaving only the son of its six-year-old leader.
The poor boy wandered aimlessly on the street for days, afraid and worried, and was found by Church only when he was about to starve to death. Archbishop noticed there was a special talent in the boy and named him an ancient priest Julian, before sending him to Raven’s Nest, a special academy affiliated with the Monastery of Light.
At the top of the cliff, the academy is home to the talented orphans Church has gathered. Young, poor, and gullible are her favorite types. Archbishop said that the children his family left behind do not deserve affection, but he will give more than affection, rebirth. Who then must be paid back with gratitude and loyalty.
They must become “Raven“, a special force that removes all hypocrites and demons from the face of the earth. Julian, due to severe trauma and stress, lost his memories of his past life, while the remaining memories inflicted deep wounds on him.
The fun and affection were all buried because of the memories of that terrifying night. Fire, painful cries, and stone-cold corpses. He had nightmares that repeated every night. Where her mother left her in a corner of the room and went to save her life, begging for mercy, without looking back to see her again.
However, not all of the remaining memories are scary. The boy also recalled a strange movement, pulled the corner of his mouth with his hand, and made a stiff smile. He always did so without her noticing, as if his heart and body could remember while his mind was not. He tried as hard as he could, but he could not remember his life either before the events of that night, nor the events after that night.
Different From Other Nestlings
Children who are in Raven’s Nest are called Nestling. They did heavy work and studied books and how to fight heavily during the day, and at night, they lived in separate rooms built on the cliff sides to pray and rest.
Every child will be given a holy name, as a form of their rebirth, a name containing prayers, mantras, and whenever they refuse to answer, punishment will await them. The punishment can be an ordinary lash, or a more cruel one such as being forced to hold hungry or being locked up for a long time.
The Nestlings lived with a state of loneliness, great in solitude, with prayer as their guide and violence as their nature. But Julian found family among the guests who came to his cave. A hungry squirrel, a sparrow, and a goat for food.
Every cold and windy night, they would listen to the boy talk about his fear and loneliness. To him, they were more like a family than an empty fraternity with the guard dogs and puppet masters that lived with him.
With his family, Julian worked diligently at the academy and became one of the most outstanding students in the fields of work, academics, and combat. Delighted by his remarkable development, Archbishop praised Julian. However, even the envious Nestlings did not remain silent.
One night, Julian returns to his room, and finds his family lying lifeless on the cold stone floor. That bloody vision made him remember something, a nightmare that used to haunt him, but he saw the shadow of a dead person, and not the shadow of an animal.
Obtaining the Punishment of Exile
Feeling dizzy and fed up, Julian did not realize that another Nestling had surrounded him. A bowed Nestling said with great excitement, “Tupai symbolizes unfaithfulness. Sparrows, indifference. And goats for weakness. Your faith is weak, unworthy of affection and rebirth like those hypocrites!“
Julian's vision became blurred, he could only feel emotions taking over his consciousness. He clenched his fists and remembered nothing else. The thing Julian remembered afterwards was that a caretaker member pulled him off his target, while the Archbishop watched him from the entrance.
The mortally wounded Nestling was lying on the ground, unconscious, while Julian stood wobbly as he leaned against the wall, trembling, as if he were getting into very cold water. He closed his eyes, awaiting punishment from the Archbishop. But nothing happened.
“People feel jealous..Shameful, waste of energy only. Give him!“
The punishment of exile is more terrifying than execution! “How about me?” Julian asked in his heart.
Julian was shocked as the Archbishop patted him on the shoulder, with pride.
“Julian, good work, nak.” Said the Archbishop. Confused and frightened, the boy said nothing. “You made it through when you slumped, huh?“
The appearance of Caaha Remang is Silver
Julian was unconscious at the time. He saw the dead animal in the corner of the room, dirty, cold, and helpless. Nestling's words echoed in his mind. Your weak faith does not deserve the affection and rebirth like those hypocrites!
“True, right?” The Archbishop's voice sounded like a hand was on his neck, which made Julian tremble in fear. After feeling that tension, he raised the corner of his mouth and put a stiff smile on his cheek.
A silver-colored dim light in the morning appeared from the east, half of Julian's face was exposed to sunlight while the other half was covered by shadows. The boy nodded slowly too.
“Yes, Your Honor. I made it through, for the sake of my rebirth.”
The Archbishop holds Julian's red hair, satisfied with the child's fortitude, “Fear of you will be ingrained in all living beings. Your decision will be obeyed by every soul on earth. And on top of you, their destiny will be written.”
A strange light emanated from Julian's dark eyes. He raised his hand and summoned an unfamiliar weapon, proving himself before the Archbishop. Moved by the man's warm embrace, encouraging words, and crippling seclusion, the boy bowed. Julian knew, in order to gain this forgotten affection, he had to become the strongest Raven of all.
Several years have passed, at the age of fifteen, the Nestlings face their final test before being crowned part of the Raven. Whether it's infiltrating the base of the opponent, spying on the Abyss, or exterminating hypocrites. Even an elite Nestling would face difficulty doing so.
But if they pass, they will return to the Monastery of Light. The shining spire of the tower was before them, with their hopeful faces, just one more step towards “rebirth.”
The hardest test is in sight.
Around the Monastery, one would call Nestling by their birth name. If they fail to survive, they will be exiled and will be considered a hypocrite. Until finally, the future goal. The purpose of this test was to test if Nestling was faithful enough to forget all of his past self. If Nestling had received his rebirth.
Julian took the test. In recent years, he has not once dared to forget the words of the Archbishop: Raven must forget his past. But he's not a real Raven. Deep down, there was something preventing him from completely forgetting his past.
He did not know what it was but it was still against. Like two voices arguing in his mind. Scarlet Raven and a lost child. Late at night, Julian sat alone in the darkness and subconsciously made that move again, pulling the corners of his mouth with his hands to form a forced smile.
Becoming the Strongest Raven
Why should he smile? Julian didn't know and didn't think about it much anymore. He had become the strongest Raven. When Xavier destroys the city walls and escapes with Yin and Melissa, the Archbishop sends Julian on a mission. “The poor mind of Xavier has been poisoned by a hypocrite, he should be forgiven.”
Julian chased them in the woods for seven days and finally caught the traitor with two strangers, exhausted and weakly defeated.
A fight is inevitable, and there is no winner on the fight between the strongest Raven and the greatest Arbiter of Light. In the fight, Julian's Raven robe fell. Upon seeing his bright red hair, the fugitive Arbiter fell silent, he noticed it, and received a crushing attack from Julian.
Xavier was no longer able to fight, but he was still trying to protect Yin and Melissa. He laughed, “If the one who will purify me is you. Then it doesn't matter. Anyway, your mom.“
Hearing those words, Julian fell silent. His eyes are wide open, “Ibuku, you know my past?“
Xavier Reaches Julian's Heart
Xavier looks hesitant for a while, as he knows Julian has promised to forget his past, until in the end, he feels pity and reveals the true events. That night in the winter, little Julian was hidden in a corner of the room by his mother.
The memory of a snowy night a decade ago struck Julian like a bolt of lightning. He saw his mother's face. A memory that had been haunting him turned out to be an affectionate memory.
With a frightened smile on her quivering lips, she held onto Julian's face, made a smile on her lips, and said, “Mom will lure them to leave here, everything will be fine. If you don't know what to do, smile.“
His mother is killed by the Ravens, before Xavier realizes Julian is hiding behind a chest. Little Julian did not know what had happened or what reaction he had to show. The only thing she remembered was when her mother raised the corner of her lips. He forced himself to smile despite the trembling.
That smile made Xavier's heart tremble. Xavier is touched, and he leaves with Raven and leaves the boy.
“Through actual events.“
He remembered it too. In an instant, what he had forgotten for ten years suddenly became clear. Living as the son of the Free Smiths, the fire in the fireplace, the warmth of his mother's embrace and the wooden toy his father gave him, Julian's hand shook violently.
Finding the True Self
A Raven who had discovered his true identity could no longer hold his sword without hesitation. His mother loved him very much and was able to sacrifice her life to prove it. He had never been ignored nor loved, the affection he had known all along had been stolen from him.
Just then, Alice suddenly appeared at the entrance of the cave with her demonic army. Xavier and his two friends have been fighting through the chase and the fight. They would not be able to survive if they had to fight in such conditions, especially if they had to fight against the demon army.
Amidst the danger situation, Julian stepped forward, standing at the center of the three herds and the Demon Queen. He asked the three men to escape through the rope bridge, before cutting the rope and facing off against the demonic army. Julian's goal wasn't to protect them.
Destroying the demons was the first order for Raven, but this was no longer a mission for Scarlet Raven. If he wants to find out more about his past, he needs a life-size Xavier. There might still be a secret he kept from her.
Despite facing the demon army, the Demon Quen, and having defied his master's orders, Julian only saw his mother's smile in his mind, and for the first time after ten years, his smile was no longer forced. He is in peace. He finally found his true self and found out how to smile sincerely again.
