In the village of Ranah, in the city of Padang is a wooden house, roofed with zinc. It was far from the big road, in a vast garden, hidden under shady wooden trees.
If you look at the tool of this house and its arrangement, it turns out this house is a house that is not properly maintained, really, because all those who are in it are old and dirty and the place is not well organized.
On the porch of the face there is only an old chandelier, which has rusted iron-tinya. When no one came, the lamp was not installed.
And because the owner of the house apparently rarely received herbs at night there, the kerosene in the lamp, sometimes weeks have not run out.
Under this lamp, there was a round table, apparently very old, surrounded by four wooden rocking chairs, the color of which was almost invisible again, because the paint was gone. In the living room, there was only a dining room cabinet, which was about half a century old.
A small marble table, which had yellow stones and holes, was located near the wall, flanked by two wooden chairs whose seats were of goat skin, on the floor lay an old rattan mat.
This central room at night was illuminated by a wall lamp, which was installed from half seven to ten p.m. In the rear foyer, there is only one piece of jewelry, namely a cloth recliner, which no longer looks like the pattern.
That's the house of Datuk Meringgih, the famous merchant rich in Padang. He holds the title Datuk not because he is a customary Penghulu, but just a call for him.
Though his house was said to be nothing but a place of rent, chariot, and horse with his charioteer, but it was his true home; for there he remained, and there was one of his shops, what he said was his real home, used only to welcome the arrival of acquaintances.
Is it poor that Datuk Meringgih claimed his home in the Land was his true abode? Perhaps answering this question will meet later. When this story happened, Datuk Meringgih was seen sitting in the porch behind his house in the Land, on the recliner earlier.
Before being told his wealth, let it be described first his form and body and also explained his habits and behavior, so that we know the truth about him and never forget it again, when he would meet again and again in this story.
His body is thin high, his back is cramped shrimp, his chest sunken, and his legs pengkar, his head is large, but thin on the face, and sulah as well. His hair, which had stayed slightly around his head, had been white as cotton was rotted.
His mishap and beard were long, but only a few strands, hanging on his chin and the tip of his lips, curved downwards. It's more than half a century old.
His eyes were small, but sharp, his nose bent, his mouth large, his teeth black and dirty, which on the face came out as squirrel teeth. His ears are large, like those of an elephant, and his skin is scarred and full of traces of smallpox.
According to the picture described above, in fact Datuk Meringgih is not a young teenager and behaving handsome, but a bad old man. Now let us tell the customs and habits, just in case it matches with the appearance.
This merchant was a filial, loba and covetous man, unloving and merciful, and cruel and rude.
As long as he will have money, as long as he gets his point, he will not heed anything, he will not fear anything and he will not look at it. Last long, the star was broken, he said.
If he wants to spend his money, even if a moment, behind and overlaid it how many times; because it is very dear he will divorce with the currency.
In fact, whether the money is spent or not and there is no other way that will be able to convey the meaning, with no money or by spending a little.
Strangled his neck, tied up his stomach, held back his lust, just don't come out of the money. If he eats rice, only with pepper sauce or dried fish only stored for a few days.
These dishes are good for him, because of the proportion of a smoky kitchen every day, useless and costs a lot. Food is eaten, so delicious that the neck is already dirt.
His house as a goat-cage and his clothes are like porters' clothes, it's okay for him, just don't come out of his money, for all of them. "Beyond being cleansed, right, being in one's own stomach infinitely dirty," he said.
The care of his ears over all maki, nista, and people's defects to him, blinded his eyes to all visions that prepare the original scenery of his money do not come out.
There was no other fondness he knew, except to look at his treasure chest, count the currency and feel his banknotes.
He will hear the sound of the money in it and the banks of its tubes to know its weight.
For hours he could play with his treasure and for days he could play with it and for days he could count the money, and in such a thing, he will forget this world and himself.
His eyes blazing, his life's blossoms, his ear buds, his mouth twitching, his hands trembling and his torso, when he saw the glittering light of gold and silver coins or heard the sound of this metal ringing.
He took the currency as a grain, then noticed and observed the stamp jagged edges, pictures and writing. The picture on the money seems to him more beautiful than the painting of the famous painter's hand.
The sound of money was more melodious than the beautiful song played by the musicologist. Therefore, he often played with his treasure and brought him to sleep together to have a dream that pleased his heart.
His hopes, memories, and intentions, day and night and morning, will be nothing but adding to his vast, endless and infinite treasure.
All the riches of this world should fall not on others, but on themselves before. It was also not satisfied with his heart. Prosper life, if his body is enclosed in a pile of eyes.
Afraid that he would get sick and die, because he could not be divorced from this treasure.
There is no more pleasure than money; all money, money, and again money. Mothers, children, relatives, acquaintances, gentleman, gentleman, and solace, are nothing but money. Money is His life, money is his God.
"Living with money, dying with money" he said. He did not want to divorce even a moment with his money. Money is not a means of pleasure, but it is pleasure.
To obtain the property, he is not afraid of cruel and evil deeds, nor is he ashamed of vile and despicable behavior.
No looks, no looks, no looks, no respect, no respect; no mothers, no sisters, no friends, no height, no low and no glory to him, to achieve this low desire.
He has no fear, no horror, no pity, no sorrow. His majesty despised him, the rich impoverished him, whose rank he dropped. The servant placed him on a throne and the dog lifted him to the top of Mount Merapi.
Last long, starry broken, seagrass money must be earned.
Thus did Datuk Meringgih, the famous rich merchant in Padang. He is rich and wants to get rich, which means because he wants to have wealth. It was not that wealth that he asked for that was all he wanted.
Hi Grandfather Meringgih! What is such wealth for you and for Sesamarnu?
You were born from the belly of your mother with nothing, and when you will leave this mortal world, for death is unavoidable, even though your treasure is as much as the treasure of King Karun, there is nothing else that you will bring to your abode, but a piece of white cloth that is enough to cover your body.
While you were alive, you were tired of collecting material possessions with no clothes.
How much distress and pain you suffer, how much torment and misery you suffer, how many swearings and vows you bear, how many maki and nista you hear, but, if you return to the mercy of Allah, stay and share your treasure with the living.
It is the treasure of the world and the treasure of the Hereafter that you can bring back to the land of the afterlife and help you on your way there and your eternal life there.
During your life, you seize the treasure from the hands of others, when you have died you will fall back the treasure into the hands of others. This is what is said by the saying; the custom of the world is reciprocating.
Everything is impermanent, but it is also exchange and transfer. The moon revolves around the sun, and the sun also revolves around nature. What remains? There is nothing but the One God as well.
Your wealth which the Lord has bestowed on you has no reward for yourself, for your neighbor and for the world; it brings pleasure and sorrow to them and to yourself.
Although it is customary for man to be greedy and greedy, though not equal to each, for if there is one who wants to be an evil one, when there is one who wants to be a little, and if there is any one who is a step further, there is no decision, as long as life is in the body, and even such a nature is what brings man to the field of progress, but be careful, be careful, for the path that is taken is twofold; a path of good and another of evil.
When the good way is done, succeed in your work, for it serves you and your neighbor. But when that evil path is your path,.
your work will bring danger and disaster to your neighbor and to yourself.
When your treasure is used for your defense, in order to have a happy life, to eat enough drink, good household and clothing, or to be spent, to satisfy your good desires, never mind; for every human being should seek the pleasure and progress of all things, lest he cross the line of good.
Even so, it will be better for your work, if your treasure is used to do good to your neighbor and serve your Lord so that you can repair the broken, finish the tangled, help the troubled, cover the poor, so reduce the torment of the world's misery.
For you know that the world contains more hard than happy, despicable than noble, which, less than sufficient, is poor than rich, the daif of the strong, the poor of the lucky.
When none of you and the other rich, who are you, than whom will they get help?
Remember that! Wealth and poverty, glory and humiliation, trouble and pleasure, yea, come from the One God also.
If he wills, with a blink of an eye, turn that wealth into poverty, glory into humiliation, joy into sorrow and abode the low, trust the poor, glory in the despicable, and laugh at the weeping.
Therefore, do not be arrogant and proud, because you have wealth, glory, pleasure, and joy but be willing, that all are free loans, which every time can be taken back by the owner.
And you who feel poor and despicable, who are always in danger, misery, and sorrow, do not despair, but be patient and trust in your Lord and trust in His help and grace. After the rain, it will be hot.
The fortunate should not despise the poor, and the poor should not be spiteful to the fortunate but be merciful forever, and help in all things, for the fortunate need be to the poor, and the poor need to be lucky.
If no one is unfortunate, then no one is honest, and if no one is lucky, no one is unfortunate.
When you use your treasure, Grandfather Meringgih, for good, no good will ever come to you, which is more than joy and pleasure, what you gain from the sound and light of your eyes: for even an act or a pill, bad and good, is not lost, as the rain falls to the sand, but live forever and arise again on you or your neighbor.
When the time comes when you will leave this world and you look back, on the path you have taken, it will be a prosperous feeling that will follow you, for I know that your life is not empty, as empty rice, but many bring service to your neighbor.
Even though Datuk Meringgih is not liked by people, because of his bad habits and behavior and greedy, but he is feared and respected by people too, because of his priceless wealth: especially by those who are often troubled by money.
Because it is a place even with interest that sometimes up to half of the loan.
When it has reached the time of the agreement, the debt has not been paid by the borrowers, certainly no longer apologized Datuk Meringgih, but they were accused and confiscated the pawns.
Where did Datuk Meringgih get so many treasures? This is a secret that has always been per-toys mouth and fruit of mind contents of the city of Padang. It is often discussed, it is often said, but no one knows it.
Similarly, no one knows who this Grandfather actually is and where he came from.
About twenty years ago, this Datuk is known to people in Padang as a dry fish seller, in the market in Kampung Jawa.
Suddenly, at one time, he bought a city and from that time on it was very quick to increase his wealth, so that when he was more than forty years old, it has several large shops and warehouses full of merchandise.
His rental house is dozens, almost all the land in the city of Padang is in his hands. His sprawling orchard and his fields are hundreds of plates. In Muara, almost all the boats that carry and take merchandise, belong to him.
The whole city of Padang was astonished to see such wealth and so much more, with no one knowing how Datuk Meringgih obtained it, because of what people heard and saw, just try and try it.
Therefore, various stories are heard about the origin of the wealth of Datuk Meringgih. Some say he got the lottery a hundred thousand and some say he got the treasure hidden in the ground.
The hardened religious man thought he had met the Prophet Khaidir on the twenty-seven night of Ramadan. People who believe in superstition think they are friends with the jinn. And the man who hated this Datuk said he put in a dark opium.
But the truth is that Datuk Meringgih is a person who knows.
Now let us approach Datuk Meringgih, who is sitting on a recliner in the porch behind his house, to find out what his work is, sitting alone.
For no time did the grandfather so sit, it was night, and it was dark that everything on the ground and in the air had entered into his cage or nest. Only bats go outside and fly here and there, looking for their prey.
High-flying villages go south, looking for ripe fruits. The owl began to sound in the wood holes so the weasel got up from his sleep, and peered here and there, will know, is there no danger outside the nest.
Snakes crisscrossing the crevices of the rock peek at frogs and small animals.
To the west, the sky is covered by black clouds containing rain, which expands from the sea to the land. The weather was bright, dark, so that nothing was seen. The stars in the sky vanished, as a black veil closed.
Quiet days, no wind, no sign of a typhoon coming. On the road, the highway is silent, as the state is defeated garuda. Sometimes people pass someone who walks quickly, as fear of rain.
In each house there are no lights, because the windows are closed. Even though it was dark like that, but Datuk Meringgih did not ask to light the porch behind his house. For what reason or for any other reason? Soon we'll know.
Suddenly there appeared a blink of an eye, a flash that illuminated all the pitch-black world and when it also sounded like a thunderbolt splitting the earth, accompanied by a very heavy rain, as water poured out of the sky, a long time later it blew a very strong typhoon, toppling some large wooden trees.
Although the day seems to be doomsday, but Datuk Meringgih is not into his house, is as all the chaos of nature is not heeded, even desired, he said, because he was still sitting pensively on his chair thinking about something important.
Suddenly it was heard in a dark place, the sound of people coughing three times. At that time just remember Datuk Meringgih about himself, then look to the right and to the left, just in case there are people close there. Then he coughed twice.
The door of this room was immediately closed tightly by Datuk Meringgih.
In this room, illuminated only by a palm oil lamp, there was a mattress and a chest. On the floor lay a pandan mat and on this mat sat their two.
There is a real look, the newly arrived person wears a soft black destar whose tip is flipped to his face until his forehead is closed. His clothes were black Chinese clothes with big arms, and his pants were Acehnese pants, whose colors were black as well.
The scabbard he wore on his shoulder, the black Bugis scabbard.
"Without wetness are you, Swordsman of Five?" ask Datuk Meringgih slowly to this clock.
"No, my Lord, for the servant is almost here, when it will rain" replied Pendekar Lima.
..."How are our jobs in Hulu Limau Manis?"...
"Not good."
"not good? What's why?" ask Datuk Meringgih while raising his face, against Pendekar Lima. There looks cruel face Datuk Meringgih.
"Our disciples are not according to the rules given to them."
"Who was the teacher at the time?"
"The Broken."
"What is the reason, then do you not teach there yourself? Did I not command you?"
"For the servant at that time had to teach in Bukit Putus; for there was also a new science coming from the land of Java, which was very large in price."
"Si Patah was not yet skilled enough to teach the students on the big targets and he was less patient. That is why, so the wrong teaching. Now where is he?" "In the stone house."
"Stone house?" asked Datuk Meringgih by raising his head anyway. "Where is the stone house?"
"The stone house in Lubuk Bagalung, together with two students."
"That is the right reward, for such a man. Have you checked the case?"
"Already" replied the swordsman Lima, "and apparently he held his oath, for there is no mention of the name of the servant."
"Try telling me from the beginning, why is it that way?" ,
"When I knew that I could not go to the Upper Lemau Manis" said Pendekar Lima, "he sent an old disciple there, the Broken One, and he said, and the servant told him the rule that Engku Datuk had given him.
At first it seemed that there was in accordance with the rule, because all the goods, fell into his hands.
But this income was not kept in the appointed place, but that day it was also sent here; it was put in a few sacks, and it was superimposed on the pedicure, who went that very night.
Apparently the pedati was long stopped at Lubuk Bagalung and there it was discovered by the yellow neck*). Since the pedicurer said he received the goods from the Broken, that day he was arrested with his two disciples."
"Alright, but seek reason, before the sentence is handed down, so that they may escape from the stone house and when it has been released, send the Broken away to the Canal or to Painan, for a while to work to take rattan, and when it has been taken away, so as not to be seen by people.
And his two disciples, tell him to go to the hill of Tambun Bones, study there in earnest" said Datuk Meringgih.
"All right, you're my man."
"About the science that you studied in Bukit Putus, how about? I don't know about it."
"Surely this thing has not been reported to my servant to you, for from that time on he has not come here."
"Well, but what is the reason, then do you not have a first agreement with me?" ask Datuk Meringgih.
"For not being able to. Actually that night I will go to Hulu Limau Manis, help the Broken, as Engku has said. But when it came to Bukit Putus, news from
*) Police officers, in the past opas-opas used
the yellow strip had his neck and on his pants.
a student there, there was a new science, came from Java, with a boat coming in that day. Science costs a lot.
Because he did not have time to come back here, tell Engku, worried that the knowledge was immediately taken to another place, I demand the knowledge myself, because apparently not how difficult."
"And can it be science?"
"Can, now be planted in the ground, near the Red Land." "How much is it?"
"About six or seven hundred, all gold and diamonds. That's what I'm trying to do, because the two disciples who went with me, asked for their share." "Later to give you fifty."
"If it may be, he asks for a hundred."
"Feel a hundred, for the price of knowledge is not necessarily so much and his salary every month, does he not remember? Never mind, I give every man seventy-five and you one hundred and fifty, if science is six or seven hundred. Don't say much anymore!
Bring the science here first! If I have estimated, you will soon get your share.
And bring our carpenter once, so that soon it can be destroyed mas made other goods; then give it to the peddler mas in'tan us, tell sell to another country."
"Well, Engku," replied the Swordsman of Five with his joy, while his eyes as the eyes of the owl believed, because of the reward he would get.
Of the three-current money, of course, at least two hundred can be by him, so that he can also drink a few days of opium and gamble, as he pleases.
"Another thing which I would like to announce to Engku. Our printer, last night died," said Pendekar Lima. "Dead?" replied Datuk Meringgih aghastly. "what's the reason?"
"A stomachache."
"Who's in exchange."
"That is what I want to ask, who will take his place?"
"Baso's friend, can't you work alone yet?"
"Already," replied Pendekar Lima. "On the mind of the servant, he is the good substitute for the dead. But who will replace Baso?"
"Find someone trustworthy among our people!"
"All right!"
"Only now, do not print too much silver, but gold is what must be exaggerated, because silver money, quickly known to people."
"All right! After all, isn't it good that the place was moved? For the new servant got a rock cave in a mountain near there that was good apparently, hidden by the sea."
"All right, we'll check it together."
"That Bombay shop thing, how?" ask Pendekar Lima, who apparently was very diligent about working, because about the two hundred rupiah money earlier. .
"Replace it; I will seek a good deception first. Now there's something else I'm going to tell you."
"What's the matter, Engku?" answer Pendekar five.
"I am not really happy to see the business of His Majesty Sulaiman, the more advanced the day, so dare he compete with me. Therefore let it be dropped." "How but what is our mind?
Because his things are not few, can not be lifted in a day two. And taken half of it, it is not felt," said Pendekar Lima.
"Didn't I tell you to steal his things, because what will be carried away by you? I'm not stupid.
I knew better reason: his storehouses and shops had to be burned, the boat carrying his belongings from Painan had to be drowned and the people there persuaded, in order not to work with him again; all his gray trees at the Coral Edge, must be treated, so that they are rotten and fruitless," said Datuk Meringgih in a loud voice, as well as hitting¬muk his left palm with his right hand, which he clenched, because of his wrath.
"Tomorrow you also begin to work at the Coral End! Tell all the students who are there! All the trees of his sheep should be in the body of medicine, so that this. Then go to the Canal and Painan.
Persuade all his men there to leave their work and enter our people. And persuade his boatmen, that his boats, with their contents, be buried at sea.
Go thou into the Field and everywhere, inciting all the shops that subscribe with him, so as not to buy him anything more.
So I can buy her stuff for a cheap price. Let me lose a little, as long as His Majesty falls. When you're done with the work, you start burning the store and the warehouse."
Pendekar Lima pensively heard this command, for he had never done anything like it. On his mind is not a little shopping and hard work.
Seeing Pendekar Lima silent, said also Datuk Meringgih, "I know, this job is not easy and must be careful to do it so that people do not know. But it will give us tens of thousands of benefits.
And in my mind you are saying to live his. Therefore I will not see how much it costs; let me lose a thousand though, as long as I mean this. I am not happy, if in this field there are still merchants who dare to compete with me.
Before he fell, my heart was not satisfied. You can use money how happy you are and you can send my people, if you have to."
Hearing the words of Datuk Meringgih that he can use the money as he likes, lost the fear and horror of Pendekar Lima and replied happily, "Alright, Engku Datuk. Let alone so, told to kill even compatriots, servants will, as long as Engku Datuk who told."
With that said, his mind floated to the thousands of dollars he would receive.
"But remember!" datuk Meringgih. "If you don't get to this I mean, you don't have to come here anymore."
Hearing these words thumped the heart of the Swordsman of Five, because it means of course he will be released by Datuk Meringgih, if this means does not arrive. And will he be able to find the master who is this Grandfather?
It is true that he is very merciful, but sees nothing, when there is something to be desired. Promise him in his heart that he will carry out this heavy command with earnest care, no matter what may happen to him.
Meanwhile, Datuk Meringgih came into his house and immediately went out and said, "this is the hundred for your temporary purchase. When this money is finished, you may ask me or all my people who hold the money.
I'll send him a letter later."
"Thank you, Engku!" answer to Pendekar Lima. "Will but what is the work of the servant here?"
"Give it to the Four and tell him to come here, so I can tell him what to do." No matter how long later it appears that Swordsman Five came out of the room, and disappeared in the dark.
