Developments in the International World
In 1996, the WHO estimated that more than 585,000 mothers per year die during pregnancy or childbirth.
In 1990 there was a World Summit for Children in New York, A. S., which serves seven major goals, among them halving maternal mortality in 2000.
In 1994, the International Coference on Population And Development (ICPD) was held in Cairo, Egypt, which stated that male and female reproductive health is vital for social development and HR development.
In 1999 WHO launched the MPS (Making Pregnancy Safer) strategy, supported by international bodies such as UNFPA, UNICEF and World Bank.
Basically, MPS calls the attention of the government and the public in every country to:
Putting Safe Motherhood as a top priority in national and international development plans,
Compiling national benchmarks and standards of Maternal and Neonatal health services,
Develop a system that ensures the implementation of standards that have been prepared, and,
Improving access to Maternal and Neonatal health services, family planning, legal abortion, both public and private,
Enhance promotive health efforts in Maternal and Neonatal health and fertility control at the family and environmental level,
Improving Maternal and Neonatal health care monitoring systems.
Developments in Indonesia
In 1988 there was a Mother's Welfare workshop which was a continuation of the conference on maternal deaths in Nairobi a year earlier.
In 1990-1991, the Department of Health assisted WHO, UNICEF and UNDP conducted a safe motherhood assessment.
The goal was to lower the AKI from 450 per 100,000 live births in 1986, to 225 in 2000.
Beginning in 1996, the Ministry of Health held a Reproductive Health workshop demonstrating Indonesia's commitment to carry out reproductive health efforts as stated in the ICPD in Cairo.
