The Tartarus mercenary base was a stand-alone complex protected by stone walls and iron barbed wire. The field was filled with huge stones, pillars, sandbags, wooden rakes, and other training equipment. Many different pieces of metal parts and miscellaneous items were also scattered throughout the area.
The complex had several large, ragged-looking buildings all connected to each other. There were dormitories, workshops, and even storage vaults. Although they all looked extremely ugly, no one in the desert cared about appearance. Having these things alone was already very impressive!
Judging from their headquarters, these mercenaries actually had a standing here. That means it's supposed to be a pretty safe place, right?
Just as this thought entered Cloudhawk's mind, a savage and ferocious black figure suddenly roared and charged straight at him. It was moving at incredible speed! It was so fast that Cloudhawk could not even see the creature clearly. All Cloudhawk knew was that it looked like an enormous ferocious beast. The creature dropped Cloudhawk to the ground, looming over it. The creature gave off a terrible and nauseating smell, and he began to bite down on Cloudhawk's neck with his long, savage teeth.
“WOOLA!” The Mad Dog immediately let out an explosive shout. "STOP IT!"
The mad beast halted its attack, baring its teeth and growling before retreating a few steps. However, his dark red eyes continued to stare at Cloudhawk without blinking. The creature remained in a cowering attacking position, as if unwilling to let go of this delicious prey just like that.
“Fuck with me. Which sonufabitch let Woola out? Take the rope!” The Mad Dog shouted loudly, while Cloudhawk managed to calm down a little as he stood up.
This is a strange creature that looks like a great ape. It weighed at least sixty or seventy kilograms, and its head was three times larger than a normal human head. It had a large nose and a large mouth that stretched all the way to its ears, as if splitting its head in half as it growled. His mouth was filled with shark-like sharp teeth; there should be at least three or four rows of teeth! It could probably bite through the metal armor without any problems at all. Meat and bones are not even a problem!
The creature had a total of six thick and powerful arms. His speed? Cloudhawk had just become his witness personally; it was most likely moving faster than the majority of creatures in the wastelands.
Why would mercenaries have such a strange beast in their headquarters?
"Don't worry. We've raised Woola here in this complex. He has a very sharp nose, and whenever someone he doesn't know tries to break in, he will handle the intruder in the same way as handling you. They have been eating human flesh since they were young. It will gnaw all the meat from your bones in just a few minutes.” Mad Dog personally restrained the creature and started tying it up again. The creature shook its huge head repeatedly unhappily, but even it was unable to withstand the strange and frightening might of the Mad Dog. “Be a good boy, Woola. Later, I will go to the black market and buy you your favorite snack; human legs!”
It has eyes, mouth, nose, and even fingers. Despite looking extremely twisted and ugly, Cloudhawk had a strange feeling that this creature was actually a kind of highly mutated human!
A strange expression on his face, Cloudhawk asked, "What's wrong?"
“You may have guessed it. This here is a mutant. His parents may have been normal human beings like us, but he had a severe mutation in his mother's womb. From what I heard, he chewed on his mother's stomach and stomach, then clawed it out,” Mad Dog began to explain. “She was arrested not long after birth, and we have been raising her and training her like a dog ever since. Critter is actually the perfect supervisor for our headquarters!”
Cloudhawk could hardly believe it. He doesn't want to believe it. You can actually train mutants like you train dogs?! But it is true that this 'Woola' creature really can no longer be considered a human being.
Still, having been a human, Woola was still smarter than ordinary animals. At the very least, it could understand human language and human speech. However, it was even more savage and bloodthirsty than most animals. In short, it was a truly terrifying strangeness of nature!
All this time, Woola's gaze never escaped Cloudhawk's face. Droplets of saliva continuously poured out of his mouth, causing Cloudhawk to shiver in fear. He could feel hostility and hostility emanating from the strange man's eyes.
“Hey, Mad Dog and Slyfox bosses! You guys back?” The entire mercenary group had around twenty or thirty people, and most of them had arrived by now. The mercenary group was divided into three squads, and the two squad captains were Slyfox and Mad Dog.
The third captain was a tall and thin Asian. She has pale skin, dark eyes, and wears glasses. On the surface, she looked quite calm and weak, and she was wearing very decent looking clothes that didn't seem too overwhelming. In this day and age, however, it looks very ordinary and normal, by itself, very abnormal. In fact, it could be said that he had a completely different scientific aura from this era.
“Hei, Mantis!” Slyfox chuckled as he walked towards the man. "Geez, I'm glad to be back in one piece and see you again."
Mantis adjusted her glasses, a cold metallic light radiating from her. His eyes were not that big, but were as cold as steel and did not seem to contain any human emotions at all. When Mantis turned to stare at Cloudhawk, the latter instantly felt a chill enter his heart and spread throughout his limbs. He felt as if he could barely move or breathe.
The gaze was like a sharp scalpel placed on his throat. The slightest movement would cause his throat to be cut off.
In this place, everyone who has a nickname is a figure with abilities that are not small. Mantis may not be as strong as Slyfox or Mad Dog, but Cloudhawk feels that she is even more dangerous. It's like the difference between a cobra and a lion; a cobra may not be as strong as a lion, but a cobra hidden in the dark can be more dangerous than a lion.
"We took the scav on the way back." Slyfox beamed at Mantis, her plump face was in stark contrast to Mantis' emotionless expression. Slyfox then added, “He is a recovery-oriented meta. It wasn't very valuable, but we were short in the logistics department so I got in. ”
A meta recovery? That's almost useless! The mercenaries turned their disdainful gazes to Cloudhawk, making him feel extremely uncomfortable and also irritated. What gave them the right to look down on him like that? Is meta recovery really as useless as they claim? Since he was born, Cloudhawk has always been a stubborn person who never likes to admit inferiority to others. He could not bear being looked down upon by these people.
“Enough, Son. You have to jump for joy having been recruited to Tartarus. We have a good reputation in this outpost.but let me explain to you now, you are not here just to laze around and enjoy life! Starting today, you will only be given two slices of bread and one bottle of water each day. Instead, you do whatever we tell you to do. No whining and no dragging of feet. Can't handle it? Then leave. Tartarus is not charity! Understood?"
Slyfox had an excited expression on his face as he said, “We make out like bandits on this mission. We need to hold a celebration!”
“HAH!”
“Life boss!”
These people are like animals; they live off their weapons and the blood of others. No one ever knew what was going to happen tomorrow, and therefore they had long gotten used to enjoying today.
Cloudhawk had no idea how the mercenaries were celebrating, but he was hungry and thirsty. All he expected was food to eat.
The sky slowly began to darken. Now, the mercenaries had produced a large amount of cheap food and wine. The quality of life at the outpost is literally thousands of times better than living in ruins, at least in terms of food. The mercenaries have access to meat and vegetables! The meat comes from all kinds of mutabeasts, served on a plate, and thoroughly cooked properly. Cloudhawk could smell their alluring scent from afar.
Now, Woola has been tied up. One of the mercenaries came up with a giant bowl filled with bloody pieces of raw meat. Woola immediately dug into the flesh, devouring it just like that. The mutant even chewed and crushed bones, swallowing them all. As for what kind of creature the flesh came from and what body parts were involved? Cloudhawk could not even imagine the answer. Unfortunately, Woola continued to stare intently at Cloudhawk despite continuing to devour his food. Cloudhawk was afraid of moving closer to Woola, for fear of being pounced on and killed on the spot.
Damn the beast!
Woola sniffed the air a few times with her big black nose, then suddenly stopped eating as she raised her head and began to roar hoarsely. Right at this moment, nearly twenty or so scantily dressed women came from outside. Although they all had rough skin and sickly faces, they were indeed much better than the pedestrians Cloudhawk had seen before.
“Boy!” Mad Dog held up his glass high. "Happy tonight!"
The mercenaries let out a shout that almost sounded like the howl of a wolf, then started dragging the women in a rather rude manner. For these women, being able to eat and drink was like a manna falling from heaven! As for Woola, the creature seemed to be very uncomfortable with so many strangers present, and continued to roar and bark incessantly. This did not, however, dampen the mood of the mercenaries, and they quickly began to act immorally without fear.
Seeing that Woola was no longer looking at him, Cloudhawk immediately circled the creature and went to fetch some food for himself.
“Hei beginners! This is not for you!”
"Fuggoff, huh?"
The mercenaries of Tartarus did not run charities; everyone was rewarded or punished according to his deeds. Cloudhawk is not just a beginner, he is a beginner who no one cares about. This naturally meant that he had no right to enjoy food with them.
“Two pieces of bread and one bottle of water. That's all you get!” Slyfox pointed at someone. "Hey you! What face? Yeah, come here. Find a place for beginners to stay. Base is full.”
He wouldn't even be allowed to stay with the other mercenaries?
Cloudhawk was issued a short word and some candles, then taken to a nearby tattered room and told to stay there. This small room is filled with dust and mold. The little candles twinkled and scattered in the dark night breeze, a vivid reflection of the child's own mood. He sat there in an ugly room, somewhat confused and somewhat uncomfortable.
Outside now it's a little scary. This room was roughly two hundred meters away from the mercenary base. If something were to happen, would the mercenaries be able to arrive on time? Will they care? Who knows! The only thing Cloudhawk knew for sure was that this mercenary viewed him as a disposable novice.
Cloudhawk finished off the rest of his hard bread, then drank all the water. He checked to make sure the beams on his door were installed, then took out the short sword the mercenaries had given him and placed it by his bedside. He then gently blew out the candle, making the entire room dark.
Cloudhawk lay on his bed of rapids. The straw pierced his skin and was a bit uncomfortable, but at least it was quite warm.
Is this the life for him in the future? Cloudhawk was nervous as well as lost. He had no plan, no purpose. He didn't know what he was going to do tomorrow, nor did he know what the future would look like.
Cloudhawk shook his head angrily as he mentally comforted himself, “What more do you want? Not only do you have bread and water every day, you even have a place to live. What should you complain about?”
Although the things here were not exactly as he had imagined, it was still much better than living as a scavenger? There is no point in thinking about things excessively. Staying alive and living a good life is all that matters!
