The two continued their journey early in the morning, when the first rays of sunlight touched the horizon. The girl apologized at the beginning of the day because she fell asleep half the story and did not hear how the Princess ended. But the man did not mind it, and instead offered to return to tell the story of the Princess one day. The girl did not mind and instead quietly said in her heart, ‘May I not die someday!’
As planned, the two passed the highway. At first the freeway built in the middle of the arid field was completely empty. The further they walked, they found the empty cars the driver had left behind. Some cars seem to be carrying a lot of stuff in a hurry. The further they walked, when the sun was already shining, they found rows of cars lined up irregularly, as if they wanted to go ahead of each other, but the queue was so long and they were stuck. Just like all previous cars, the drivers just leave the vehicle. Many do not close their car doors, many are still closed and their belongings are still there. As if, the drivers chose to leave everything behind and just go carry his body.
“Definitely because of the earthquake they ran ranggang left his belongings,” said Faith slowly, not wanting to sound pretentious in front of the man.
But the man did not respond, and the two again walked in silence. For a while they walked as usual, until a small earthquake shook the ground again. Faith held hands with the man during the trip. They were shaken by a small earthquake 2 times after the first earthquake, lucky because they held hands, the girl did not stagger like when they were first hit by the earthquake.
When the sunlight became golden, they reached the toll gate crowded with empty cars trapped before they managed to exit the toll. Outside the toll booth, there were still scattered cars left by their owners, but they were far fewer in number than before. They entered the city about thirty minutes later. The city was as lonely as the previous city, with buildings empty and damaged by the earthquake. The silence of this city gave Faith a slight chill.
They had just passed one of the gas filling stations that seemed to have caught fire when at a crossroads after the girl's eyes caught a figure walking with small but fast steps. The figure was carrying a wheeled litter box that he had pushed through easily, probably empty. His eyes were wide, half in disbelief, half happy, and half frightened. The figure with white hair was tied in a mess and the small, slightly rounded body stopped as his eyes stared back at the girl.
“What are you doing here!” yells. It was a grandmother who clearly looked old, yet her voice was still shrill. He did not sound like he was asking, but rather cursing at the girl. His eyes also glared. He was the first human that Faith had seen since the first day the mountain erupted.
“Man!” Faith exclaimed with ecstasy, not filtering out what came out of her brain.
“What do you mean human! Do I look dead?” the grandmother shouted back while shaking her waist. “What are you doing here?” this time the grandmother asked.
“Oh, I am on my way to the capital,” replied the girl in a trembling voice. He can't say that he's heading to ‘a place that doesn't touch the fury of god’, can he?
“Ke city? What do you want to go there? It is very dangerous here, especially in the city. You should go back wherever you came from and do not go any further,” the grandmother said in a lecturing tone.
“Why?” ask Faith.
“Unless you want to die. Are you not aware? Look around you, we're facing doomsday. If you want to go to the city, maybe you will meet more people, but there is a very terrible terror. It was so horrible that I whose ears were already this ugly could hear screams at night! I don't know how you survived these few days, or what your plan was to reach the capital, but I know one thing; you have to stay away from the night. Find a place to stay overnight and be quiet during the night, do not talk, do not move, do not even breathe.” He finished talking and lowered his hand that was resting on his waist. He shook his head blatantly. “Be careful,” he said then while pushing his trash back away from the girl.
“What appears during the night?” Faith stopped the grandmother's steps with her question before she walked 3 steps.
The grandmother stopped and looked at him in disbelief. “Terrors that cannot be seen by the eyes, terrible nightmares, that snatch away anyone indiscriminately. Monster!” the grandmother said loudly. He shook his head again, then left with his litter box. Faintly, Faith could hear the grandmother muttering, “I am old and still have to suffer like this. Why should I bear it.”
“Be careful!” Faith yelled at the grandmother as she moved away, while she and the man were still in place. He stared at the old grandmother's back for a moment, then his eyes returned to the man. The man looked at her meaningfully. “What comes at night, Mr Spirit?” he asked in an almost pushy tone.
The man smiled. “Persis as he says,” the answer is straightforward.
The girl frowned dissatisfied with the man's answer. Although the words of the grandmother are clear, but the meaning is ambiguous. She still could not imagine what was really happening or what was coming at night so the grandmother told her not to breathe. Recalling, the Spirit Master also asked him not to come out when it was dark and not to touch the ground. Something must have happened during the night. But he knew that he could not force the Spirit Master to answer him, so he had to hold back his curiosity and continue on.
"The grandmother was so attentive to me that she was just as unnoticed as you were" Faith commented between the gaps in her teeth.
Answering him, the man smiled while chuckling lightly. "Of course, he can't see me." This answer left a big hole in the girl's head, and when her eyes looked at the man, the man's smile did nothing to help.
They stopped at a 3-story former office building and rested on the 3rd floor during the night. Faith rolled out her blanket when it was a little dark. He was enjoying the food and mineral water he was carrying when suddenly a golden sheen appeared in the sky. It was indeed that the sky was not yet so dark, yet he could not ignore the contrasting light that suddenly floated in the sky. He looked at her through the window glass and his eyes flashed.
“Lentera!”
The man who was reading something from one of the tables turned his eyes to something the girl was pointing at. He knew the girl must have pointed to something that caught his attention, but the man caught something else. It was the girl's face and sparkling eyes. But then he followed the girl's index finger and she moved closer to see better what was really attracting the girl.
A few dozen lanterns flew into the air in the distance, not so far away that they could still see the sparkle. The flames on each lantern danced in the wind and created the illusion of flashing light.
“I think the direction is from the city center,” Faith said. He's leaning against the window. His hand rested on the glass, but he did not open the window.
The man stared at the lantern in the distance calmly. He then asked, “If you let go of the lantern, what do you do it for?”
Faith asked carefully and her voice swallowed. He did not say it as an arrogant person who already knew his fate or someone else's. He said that as a human being he knew that he was very weak and powerless compared to nature and the gods. He cannot do anything even if someone asks for his help, because he himself does not know whether he can help or not. Plus, the man had already asked her from the beginning not to leave the building and touch the ground.
“Everyone has their own destiny. Without us moving, gods have their own way to fulfill someone's destiny. It's not that we don't have to do something if someone needs help, I would say that you don't have to force yourself to help someone in this situation. Grandma just now, she can help you by allowing you to stay where she's hiding. He's scared, isn't he? Wouldn't it be better if someone was with him? But he didn't do it and just told you to find a place to hide during the night. He helps you in a different way, but he still helps you. Kindness is everywhere, sometimes it is difficult to find it in the midst of a chaotic world, but goodness remains.”
The man's words were clear and slow, so Faith could understand them well. He swallowed those words well in his heart, then said, “You are so wise. I believe you also know a lot about humans.”
The man suddenly sighed loudly. His eyes stared out the window and a faint smile adorned his face. The girl caught the change in expression of the man before her with a sense of attraction. “You look like you want to tell me something, Mr. Spirit.”
It took him a few seconds before he finally started talking. “It's been a long time since I first watched over humans. My first human-related assignment took place four million years ago.”
“Four million years?” the girl glared. “Our antiquity calendar is not even that old!”
“No, of course. It was a time you did not fully understand,” replied the man. “By the way, because of the length of time I spent watching over the world and humans, there are many things I can learn. I'm not alone, of course. Many non-humans have also been in contact with humans for a long time. I'm sure they also learned a lot about humans.”
“What was your first task related to humans? To take a soul like me?”
The man smiled. “Observing them, simple. Only by watching can I gain a lot of new knowledge about humans. Very inspiring.”
“Who gave you that task?”
The man went back silent for a moment and replied, “Other figures are equally not human.”
The girl nodded while muttering. “Anyone who sends you wants you to learn. No matter how simple your task is, there must be something you can learn, something new that you did not know before. I'm sure that figure wants the best for you.”
“True.” The man answered quickly.
“So then, you will continue to hide from me what kind of creature are you exactly?” Faith spoke later. He got that thought when the man called another creature ‘not man’. “Well, no problem. As long as it's not you who kill me.”
The man was amazed to hear the girl. He had a lot of impressions about the girl. “Why are you so brave? In the midst of great disasters and mass killings during Judgment Day, you remain standing tall. You yourself dig the ruins after the earthquake, stare at the volcano lightly, talk to looters, sleep soundly in the midst of threats. What makes you stand so upright?”
“You said it yourself, taking my soul is not the same as killing me. At least you wouldn't have killed me, even though you would have let me die had I been in danger. But at least I won't be alone when I die. Isn't that nice, when there's someone beside you on your last breath?” the girl said. His tone was calm and unhurried. “For the question why I dare, I have no answer..”.
The man knew the girl could not or would not give an answer because she refused to remember something she wanted to forget. He couldn't push it any further. Forcing him to answer would only hurt him, and it was a dishonorable act. Whoever he is, he must not force others to do anything beyond the consent of the person concerned. Even though the intent is good, making the person uncomfortable will only be a bad thing. So he held himself back.
The silence between them changed as they watched the glow of the lanterns in the distance extinguish one after another. Maybe it was because they were already too high in the air so their light died. But that's not the cause. Darkness suddenly enveloped the sky, hiding any light from the earth.
“Away from window.” The man said. Faith complied and took a few steps back. The man then looked at her without moving from his original position. “You can rest now. I'll stay here.”
Faith was still digesting her roaring mind voicing protest, and she was silent for a while. “Is this really a terrible terror?” tanyanya.
The man before him fell silent without returning his gaze. For a while he kept silent until Faith lowered her hopes of receiving an answer. Suddenly the man opened his mouth. “For Earth, of course this terror is terrible. To me, this terror is just a minor nuisance. You are with me, so don't be afraid.”
“What really happens during the night?”
Again, the man was silent for a moment. This time his eyes were directed down the building. “Have you ever asked, where did everyone go?” said. In a moment, the girl stopped breathing. This guy's right. Totally right. But just as Faith was about to open her mouth, the man looked at her calmly. “Breaklah. Your body needs it.”
So rest the girl that night, curled up in a jacket and blanket. By all miracle, he went back to sleep in peace. I don't know what miracle this girl had that she still dared to even sleep quietly in the middle of Judgment Day and the terror that enveloped her. But clearly, the red-clad man remained standing by the window all night.
For the next three days, the two were still walking the streets of the city together. They walk every morning until it gets dark, and rest all night. Sometimes the man stayed with him during the night, sometimes he left. But always the request is that the girl does not leave the building or touch the ground when it is night. Their main goal remained in the direction of the capital, and soon they would reach it. It was on the seventh day that they had entered the last city before heading towards the capital. But as the man had said before, they would only pass through the capital and not stop there. So, their journey is still long.
