6.3 Opus 6: A Silent Longing

VIOLIN

I was hearing a rhythm coming from my computer. I just got it off a friend's computer. I don't know what song, who's song but in the file he wrote “13_Track (Instrument is quite jazzy)”

I could never understand music very well, but at least I know a little of its history. In history I know the word jazz, but the word jazzy? As if pointing to adjectives, as if in English we often hear the words sad and sadly, angry and angry, happy and happy.

Can jazz be categorized as a trait?

I then read the books in the library that were already dusty, and was surprised to find the word “jazzy”. On a page that has been hit by a cockroach urine melt, it is told that jazz music emerged as a switch from “traditional” music to “popular” music.

The rise of swing in the 1930s brought about important changes in the way people viewed this music, which ultimately influenced the categorization of jazz positions among various other music. The swing era was marked by the emergence of jazz bands with big bands as a form of European orchestration applied in jazz, although it still retains its main characteristics, such as improvisation, syncopation and blue notes[1].

With these developments, jazz is no longer considered “barbar” music because it is synonymous with black people. By that time, jazz had even become popular music, with its swing rhythms suitable for dancing. Not a few jazz compositions from such musicians as George Gershwin, Cole Porter or Duke Ellington were appointed to the film's soundtrack, and the composition was actually a pop song of his day.

The development of jazz that increasingly led to entertainment music caused a reaction among black jazz musicians. Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie introduced bebop in the late 1940s.

The emergence of bebop is often referred to as a revolution in jazz music, because it is said that the exponents have a new spirit that aims to restore jazz in its essence as the music of “seni” typical of the negroes. This new flow is characterized by the development of formations in a more minimalist with the consequence of increasing the breadth of space for solo improvisation of each player.  Then after that come out also some variations of jazz such as cool jazz and hard bop

As a genre of music that increasingly requires seriousness, it is not surprising that jazz began to be somewhat shunned by the audience. Especially at that time, the rock trend’n roll increasingly dominate the world popular music scene.

If in the 1940s, jazz can be found in the community of public entertainment venues and dance parties, since about 1950 and then it will be felt “bergeser” to the community of intellectuals and academics, where they are increasingly likely to treat this music as if a “discipline” of its own.

In recent times, it has become increasingly apparent that jazz music is always contradictory to popular music (rock and pop), where if someone becomes a fan of one type of music this will usually reject the other. Less commonly known is that the two types of music have a relationship with each other that affects each other. Doesn't jazz or rock grow from the same root, the blues?

Perhaps not many people know that the Beatles songs have been performed by jazz musicians as standard songs. Or that Sting, frontman of the '80s New Wave group The Police, was also a reliable jazz musician.

The emergence of various forms of synthesis between jazz and entertainment music is often the subject of debate among music critics, regarding the categorization that is becoming increasingly blurred because of it. Since around the 1980s, various new streams are named Adult Contemporary (AC), presumably to indicate that this music is intended for certain age groups who are considered to have been “adult”, which is a popular music genre, usually 30 years and above. The music that can be categorized as AC include:

Fusion, born around the late 1960s, when Miles Davis, an exponent of bebop and cool jazz popularized a new variant of jazz by adopting R&B elements. Miles' pioneering work was continued by generations of musicians under him.

One of the most successful was Chick Corea where he popularized the use of electronic instruments in jazz, so that fusion then could hardly be separated from the (electronic) feature. At first, fusion was still quite laden with jazz improvisation, but then it increasingly led to pop with a simplified type of composition to further appeal to the market's tastes.

This last type is then more popular with the term smooth jazz or sometimes called contemporary jazz and is also called “Jazzy”, which means “somewhat.ngejazz” or “slightly nuanced jazz”.

Generally this term is used to refer to popular music that adopts jazz elements, generally in chord and rhythm progressions that are often used in jazz such as swing, soul, bossanova and so on. Some of the early pioneers of jazzy include groups Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago around 1968.

One of the most popular variants lately is acid jazz, where the new music flow is said to be the result of “ulah” DJs in creating a type of dance music by including jazz elements, including, soul, hip hop, and funk in one composition. Acid jazz was performed by groups such as Brand New Heavies and Incognito, with its dynamic beat quickly gaining acceptance among younger listeners.

Done it. I closed the book and imagined a music consisting of various streams. It's not wrong to say that music has a world of its own. Like different human beings but can unite, as well as music.

Then it turns out I found music can be a trait. Maybe because it is also the nature of people who like dangdut different from the nature of people who like jazz, or maybe it is also different from people who like rap songs.

So what about the violin?  Can't the violin play with jazzy?

THEM

Hastily Raya put her hand in the pocket of the jacket. Drizzling down on the pavement, in a street lamp the light explains the drizzle points. Smooth violet-colored fall. Raya enters a public phone box, dialing a number she already remembers.

“Halo?” he said when there was a voice of someone on the other end.

“Halo?”

“Sorry to talk to Anjeli?”

“For a while, from whom?”

“From Raya.”

There was the sound of a telephone handle as it was placed (possibly on a table) and the sound of steps away. Raya waiting while intensifying drizzle hit by light rays. This time feels long. Until finally there was the voice of Anjeli.

“Halo?”

“Li it's me!”

“Oh hi!” his voice was so cheerful, “where was it?Busy training huh?”

“Yes that, two tiring months, but next week I leave.”

“Li, what's up?”

“Ah no...”

Then the pause was there again, until Raya decided to ask

“Li, have you ever been in love?

...

...

… In a room, Anjeli sat on a red velvet chair with no backrest. Holding the phone and one hand was doodling the table, like there was a stored unease. Sounding from his interlocutor

“Yes that, two tiring months, but next week I leave.”

Next sunday? I shouldn't care, but I care more. Can he stop me from going?

The sound of his heart created a slight pause

“Li, what's up?”

“Ah no..”

Want to ask if Raya felt anything? But even Anjeli did not know anything, which he knew there was such a strong nagging feeling. So he chose silence again. His joy evaporated suddenly. This is a mystery, even Anjeli himself was astonished at his heart.

Suddenly it sounds Raya asking, “Li, have you ever been in love?”

“What?” she stuttered, “why are you asking that?”

“Nothing, sorry to interrupt.”

“No, just I thought your question was weird.” Anjeli began to be able to master his feelings, his tone back to normal.

Then the conversation returned as usual, discussing the usual things. Without anyone knowing that almost without sound, such as opening a notebook a sentence rattled, infiltrated through the vibrations of Anjeli's eyelashes. From the gap of the lentic hair flows clear water that continues to flow into the cheeks like a crystal.

I don't recognize you any more Anjeli

I don't recognize you any more.…

RAYA

“Anjeli, you can always present a new tone composition in my mind.”

“You don't overdo it.”

“This is serious!”

“So?”

“I'll play a new song for you, especially for you.”

“When?”

“Later!”

“I wait.”

“…”

“…”
