"Good date, have a good week."
It was a sentence written on my phone screen, a message from Reza. I can't guess by what expression the message should be read. Did Reza give up on me and then expect me to have a fun date? Or is that sentence a message of disappointment to me?
“Have you had breakfast before,” asked Apriliawan disperse my daydream.I have to get rid of all thoughts about Reza, I do not want to ignore the kindness of Apriliawan who was willing to pick me up.
“Not yet, let's eat at my house later,” said my spirit invites Apriliawan. This was the first time I had brought her to my house, although there was little concern because my place was far from decent compared to where she lived.
“Sure! I emptied my stomach to eat with you this morning. But we will arrive in the next 30 minutes, now you eat this first,” said Apriliawan while offering a bag of snacks.
“Wah! Since when did you buy this?”
“I bought some cakes sold by old grandfather time filling gasoline.”
“I think it's delicious,” said I enthusiastically try to show my gratitude and eat it immediately, occasionally I will help Apriliawan to eat the cake from my hands.
“So, will you keep coming back for meetings at your school later?” apriliawan asked me while cleaning some food crumbs that were stuck to his lips.
“Iya. I'm not happy if not present at the first meeting,” said I showed a resigned face.
“You how else, we have to go back at 9:00 so as not to be late.”
“Yes, thank you for being bothered by me,” I said while smiling shamelessly.
A few minutes later, we arrived at my place. Apriliawan put the car on the side of the road and decided to walk into the alley of my house, we were unlikely to pass through the narrow alley to bring a car.
Ever since I got out of that car, I could see the cold glances coming from the several pairs of eyes belonging to my father's family, usually they would gather at one point to gossip about this and that. And now, I'm sure that they've made me their rosipan.
I'm used to the look and talk they're talking to me. Whatever I do will be wrong in their eyes, because at first the family from the father's side never allowed my mother to be a part of them.
My achievements and good manners will easily be turned into reproaches and insults. The family from the father does not always provide support like the family from the mother. In this family, there will always be fierce competition for the slightest thing.
“Grandmother!” I called with great enthusiasm. My mother's grandmother had come from far away, taking at least three days for her to get here. I ran small to hug her with excitement.
“My grandson is already big apparently,” said grandma stroked my hair.
“Sure! We have been separated for 4 years. I was in the 5th grade of Primary School. I miss you!” I hugged him tighter.
Ooopss.
“Good morning, Grandma. My name is Apriliawan, I'm a friend of Zytha.” Apriliawan greeted very politely and he did not look awkward in the least. I saw my grandmother's friendly smile, I don't think I need to worry about anything.
“Just hug your grandma? What about your mother?”
“Mother.., I miss you too. Where's My Dad?” I said while switching hugs.
“He is working on some neighbor orders behind,” my mother said. My father must have been struggling with wood and machinery, assembling sheet by sheet of wood. Sometimes my dad would make doors, windows, cabinets and stuff. My father had extraordinary skills for me, there was nothing he could not make. It's just that the skill feels useless when no order comes. And in the end, dad will decide to rough work out the village like going to dig an illegal mining pit.
“Let's let your friends in first, you guys must not have eaten.” My mother with an incredible instinct guessed our rumbling stomach. I raised a smile and encouraged Apriliawan to enter our slum.
My house is not much different from the rest of the house, only there are some wall paint that peels and the color starts to fade. The floor is also made of cement that has begun to crack. Even if it rains, we will run quickly to find a container to hold rainwater seeping from the leaking roof.
I looked at Apriliawan's face once again, I ascertained what expression he would give when looking at my place that was not as good as his house. However, I'm quite relieved. Apriliawan exuded an extraordinary enthusiastic gaze, he looked back and forth as if he was in a museum of ancient goods.
“Already! Don't look too far anywhere. Let's eat first!” I pulled Apriliawan to sit at the dinner table. The menu served on the table is quite satisfying, today it seems like grandma has reached into her pocket to buy this nutritious food.
After eating, we sat in the family room. The size is not large and not too narrow. Not long after, we gathered at this point. Grandma, dad, mom and my two sisters–Ria and Hidin. Apriliawan is busying himself with some of Hidin's pet birds out there, maybe he understands that we will talk about something important.
“Nak,” said my father started the conversation. He looked at my mother and grandmother.
“You why? Just talk. I will listen,” my words are strong even though I feel afraid of something.
“Grandmother will take your Sister with me.” Finally Grandma took over the conversation that I couldn't say. I was quite surprised, I saw my two young sisters. My sister who is 12 years old and my brother who is 14 years old, we are 2 years old to each other.
“Why suddenly?” I asked by trying to maintain the vibration of my voice.
“Your mother and father will go to Aunt Liza's place to try their luck. And your two brothers will come with grandma,” my mother continued. The news hit my heart, without realizing it, I was crying.
“Don't be sad, Honey! I'm sorry to leave you alone here. We promise, next year we will pick you up.”
I realized destiny was still toying with our fate, a fate that made a thousand excuses for us to be apart. My mom and dad are going to go pit luck to the westernmost region of the country, my two sisters to the east and I'm south of– alone. It is ironic, no longer two islands but three islands.
“You won't take me?” my mother began to gently stroke my back.
“We can't take you now because you're still a new student at the best school. It's a pity that you have to get out of there. But next year we will decide whether we will reunite here or we will take you also with us.”
