Vol. 4 - 16. Fermentations

"Fiona, the pancakes are ready. What to use for?" tanya Seri while transporting a medium-sized pot made of copper.

Fiona had just entered the kitchen room again, carrying a basket of cleanly washed kluwek. The girl placed the basket on the table, then checked the pot Seri was carrying. Unlike the modern pans, the Series carries a fairly long handle pole, serving as a hanger on a burning fire. Fiona had never seen such an ancient pot.

"Okay, this can be used. Thank you, yes!" said Fiona. Seri's smile expanded so wide hearing him. "Together!"

Lucas enters the kitchen after Fiona. The suit was removed, brought by one of the servants. The ends of both arms of his shirt were folded up to the elbows, displaying the young man's stocky hands. Another waiter swiftly brought Lucas a towel, to wipe away the sweat that was pouring down the young master's forehead.

"Young Master, do you want to prepare water for a bath?" ask the waiter. Lucas wiped the sweat away and replied, "Later on. Looks like Fiona's not done yet."

Lucas gives the towel back to the waiter's hand, then walks over to Fiona. The girl was pouring all the washed seeds into the pot. Then, he dipped water from a drum in the corner of the room and filled the pot until the seeds were all submerged.

"Okay, it's time to boil. Umm ... ." Fiona raised her eyebrows. He was confused to see a furnace that used firewood. How do I turn it on?

The series sees a dazed-looking Fiona.  "I can turn it on if you want!"

"Well! Very helpful! Please, yeah!" Fiona thumbs up towards Series. The girl was immediately excited.

Behind Fiona, the servants were whispering. "How is it possible, he can't start his own fire? How was his life in his village before he worked here?"

Shit, I forgot that that one just now would look really weird. They don't understand that I only know gas stoves!

"Fiona, what to do next?" Lucas's questions took over the waiters' attention.

Fiona breathed a sigh of relief. Good, he switched topics!

"Next we will boil all these seeds, for at least two hours, to remove any remaining toxins that are still attached" Fiona replied. Lucas seemed to understand.

"Then, afterwards?"

"We dry first, then ... ." Fiona paused for a moment. He looked around, looking for something. "I need sacks and ashes. Do we have any?"

"Sacks and ashes?" ask Lucas to make sure. Fiona nodded.

"Fiona, the fire's on!" Seri proudly shows his work. The fire had been burning from inside the combustion furnace. Apparently Seri had also attached a pot to a hanger on top of the furnace. The saucepan touched the tip of the fire, making the water in it cook slowly.

Oh, how to cook it is like using a campfire when you are camping ... . Fiona came to a conclusion. He just understood the simple cooking technology in this world.

"Thank you, yeah, Series!" exciting Fiona. The series drifted more, he felt very meritorious. Fiona realized that and smiled. He seems to be an innocent child.

"So you need sacks and ashes, what for?" ask Lucas again.

"For fermentation, sir," replied Fiona. "Later, after boiling for two hours, all these seeds will be soaked in ash in the sack."

"fermented? Like when people make alcoholic drinks and bread?"

"About like that, just a different way. Anyway, that's it!" fiona toilet. He also did not really understand how the fermentation process worked. He only knows how to do it.

"Oh, okay. Hey, guys!" Lucas commands the servants. "Prepare the sack, and also a lot of ashes!"

"Good, Master!"

"Well, thank you everyone! We can use all of this for the next pangium seeds!" Fiona looks cheerful.

Two hours passed unnoticed. The pot has been lifted. The entire kluwek seed had been drained on a long table. After drying, Fiona picked up the sack and the prepared ash. The girl covered the bottom of the sack with a layer of ash. Then, insert some seeds that have been dried.

"So, all the seeds that have been boiled must be coated with ash like this. Let no one be missed. The bottom, top, right, and left sides should be flat covered in ash" Fiona said.

After the last layer of seeds had been covered in ash, Fiona tied the sack until it was tight. "This we leave for about 40 days."

"Is it all? Like that's all? Then, the seeds can be eaten?" ask Lucas again.

"What, those pangium seeds were edible? Like squirrels eat seeds?" Series is hoarding the chat. The girl looked towards Lucas. The employer shrugged his shoulders.

"Duh, no! It's not the seeds we're going to eat right away!" Fiona took a breath. "After 40 days, the seeds should be processed again. We'll make it cooking!"

"Cooked spices??" This time, it was not only Seri and Lucas who were astonished, but the entire workers who were in the kitchen. Fiona. "Look at it, later!"

Two weeks later, Fiona invites Lucas to return to the land, inspecting the fruits of the pangium they have piled with leaves. Once there, decay has occurred. Almost all the flesh of the fruit has been eaten by caterpillars, leaving many seeds scattered in the ground. 

Fiona, Lucas, and the four escorting soldiers reassemble the grain as they did before. However, this time, Fiona proposes to wash it in a river located near the land. Not to forget also, the girl instructed the soldiers escorting her to carry enough nets, pots, and firewood.

"Put the seeds into the net, then tie the net on the riverbank, so that the water continues to wet the seeds until clean. In the meantime, you guys ... ." Fiona turned her head towards the soldiers standing by the river. "Prepare the pot and light the fire. We'll boil all this after three hours of washing. Then, for the two of you, please prepare sacks and ashes."

Fiona so remembered the time during working in the office first. Clear and unequivocal is Fiona's style of leading, when meeting clients from vendors who work with her company. Fiona does not mess around when she finds fault from the vendor. On the one hand, her superior praised Fiona for her thoroughness. But on the other hand, they warn Fiona not to be too hard.

What's up, huh, Mr Theo and Mrs Dea? If I could go back to the world I came from, would they believe that I went to medieval times, without electricity or the internet?

Fiona drowned in daydreams long enough. Suddenly, he was surprised at his own thinking.
