Devan invites Amel to talk to him in the living room. They sat in a chair facing the outside window. Amel looked at Devan with an incomprehensible look.
“Do you have to go to Singapore? Can't you just stay here?”
Devan seemed to be staring downwards deliberately avoiding Amel's gaze. “Yes, I have to go Mel. I can't stay here anymore.” There was a heavy sound from Devan. He seemed to be holding something inside of him.
Amel's eyes began to fog. “Didn't Brother ever say he'll never leave me again like he used to?”
Devan raised his head to look at Amel. “Iyaa, but now the situation is different Mel. There's already a Rendi who'll take care of you. I don't know what I would do if I stayed here. I'm just afraid I'm gonna change my mind and take you away, Mel. Maybe you don't know how much I love you. I liked you from childhood, Mel. It's not easy for me to see you marry someone else.”
Amel's face became clouded. "I'm sorry Brother for not being able to return your feelings." Amel looked down, feeling very guilty towards Devan.
"You're not wrong Mel, it's just that fate doesn't side with me. It was my fault for leaving you back then. If I had stayed by your side, I might have been the one now by your side."
Devan tried to hold tightness in his chest when he recalled that he could not have Amel because Amel already belonged to someone else.
"I regretted my decision at that time. I should have looked for you earlier. Many times I blame myself for leaving you without saying goodbye first. I was depressed at the time too, Mel. I thought you would never forget me so I comforted myself a little by thinking that you would definitely be waiting for me. But, reality says something else. You didn't even recognize me at our first meeting. It makes my heart hurt. When I found out you already had a girlfriend I was so disappointed in you. In fact, you promised to marry me." Devan tried to breathe deeply and then exhaled slowly.
"I'm mad at you because you didn't keep your promise. I assume you betrayed me, but in fact I was the one who gave another man a gap to enter your life. I tried to take you back because I thought you were mine. You shouldn't be happy with other men. Your love is unshakable. My biggest regret was leaving you alone when you needed me the most." Devan's voice seemed to tremble.
It was clear that regret was so deep on Devan's face. "I'm sorry Mel for leaving you alone that time. It must be hard for you to go through the days without me by your side." Devan's tears just escaped.
Seeing Devan shed tears, Amel immediately hugged him and cried. "I did blame you for leaving me without saying goodbye first. There is not a single day I miss without blaming you. You should know, I used to rely on you a lot. You're all I have. You healed my father's wounds, but you also incised new wounds by leaving me with no news as my father did to me."
Life without a father is very hard lived by Amel and his mother. Being humiliated and underrated for not having a father was already Amel's daily diet. Until Devan is present in his life. Amel's life slowly changed.
Devan protects Amel from people who often hurt him. No one else dared to disturb Amel because the Devan family had a big influence in the village of Amel.
"I'm sorry Mel. I'm sorry." Devan let go of his embrace. "Maybe this is our way, Mel. I'll try to take it with a chest."
Amel wiped away her tears. "I just hope that in the future, no one will hurt you as much as I do you right now. I hope you can live well and always be happy, brother."
"Thank you Mel. I hope you're always happy too. If one day Rendi hurts you tell me, Mel. I'll pick you up and take you away. I won't let anyone hurt you again" Devan said solemnly.
"Rendi will never hurt me, sister. From the past until now he's always treated me well, even all this time I've always hurt him."
"Yes, I hope it stays that way forever. Live happily Mel. Only then, can I live quietly without worrying about you."
Amel smiled sincerely while nodding. "Good Brother. I hope that Brother can also start a new life without the shadows of mass."
"Yeah." Yeah."
"What time does Brother leave?" Amel just remembered that he doesn't know Devan's departure time yet.
"I want to take you to the airport."
Amel did not want to waste the opportunity to see Devan one last time before he left for Singapore.
"alright. Does Rendi know that you want to take me to the airport?"
"I haven't told you, Brother. I'll ask her for permission later."
"All right."
"Sister, someone wants to ask Brother."
Devan looked at Amel with a curious face. "What?"
"What is your relationship with Friska? Why did you go to Singapore with him?” Amel was astonished to find out Devan was going with Friska to Singapore.
Devan is not the type of man who is easily close to any woman. He likes to keep his distance from women he does not know or who are not too close.
“I have to take her with me. I can't leave him here with his condition still unstable. I was just afraid that he would ruin your relationship with Rendi.” Devan said in a heavy voice. He tried to avoid looking at Amel.
“What Brother is sure just because of that?” Amel was still staring in full sight at Devan. He thinks Devan's attitude this time is out of his habit.
Devan walked up to the window and stared out. They were both in the family room. “In addition, I was also afraid that he would commit suicide again. Someone has to keep an eye on him until he can get through his tough times.”
Amel stood beside Devan. “Kak, I know you well. All this time you never cared about any woman. Is Brother starting to like it?”
Devan looked at Amel for a moment. “No. I just feel sorry for him. I think she's actually a good woman, it's just her way of loving Rendi is wrong.”
“You are also a good man Brother. I hope you can quickly find your true love,” said Amel sincerely.
“I haven't thought about it Mel. Forgetting you is the hardest thing for me. I've liked you for a long time. It's not easy for me to find your replacement.”
Amel felt guilty after hearing Devan's words. “I'm sorry, Brother."
Devan rubbed Amel's shoulder. "Don't ever apologize again about it, Mel. You're not wrong." Devan does not want to dissolve any longer in grief. "We better get back, before Rendi looks for you. I'm afraid he'll misunderstand me." Devan stood followed by Amel.
"Yes, sister." Without them realizing, there were eyes that were always watching the two of them.
