Chapter 4: Bone Refining Cliffs
In front of the children, Division Head Yue shouted, “Everything, listen carefully. Within the bamboo forest, there was a small path where you would proceed forward where you would finally reach the Bone Refining Cliff of the Seven Mysteries Sect. The first street area was the bamboo forest. The second area will be a rocky slope area. The last area will be the cliff. Only those who manage to climb the Bone Refining Cliff during the day will become disciples of our Seven Mysteries Sect. If you are finished after noon, although you will not be an Inner Disciple, you can still be an Unofficial Disciple as long as your performance shows incredible prowess.”
Han Li naturally did not understand what it meant to be an Unofficial Disciple. He only knew that all he had to do was climb the cliff. Turning his gaze forward on the uneven and steep slopes, he saw many long shoots lying on the surface of the cliff. Seeing this, it seemed like the first hurdle should be quite easy!
Studying other children, Han Li did not want to lose to children his age. The atmosphere quickly became tense for other children as well.
Division Head Yue glanced at the sunrise and said, “Oke, it's almost time, get ready to leave! Don't be afraid, your senior will protect you from behind if there is danger.”
Han Li turned his head and glanced at the unrecognizable young man.
These people were senior disciples, so they should have come from the previous generation. Han Li could not help but think, “How impressive, if I manage to join them, can I wear the same robe of Inner Disciple?”
As he blindly pondered, Han Li discovered that the other children had already rushed into the bamboo forest. Seeing her lagging behind, Han Li quickly started moving forward.
As soon as the thirty children rushed in, they stopped moving as a group and scattered within the vast bamboo forest. Behind Han Li was a skinny senior disciple with a cold expression on his face, quietly following Han Li. Han Li was a bit scared, but he did not dare to start a conversation and waste time. A little intimidated, he lowered his body and started stepping on the steep slope.
This stretch of bamboo forest seemed ordinary on the outside, but after Han Li walked a short distance away, he found that it was slowly becoming increasingly difficult to move forward. His footsteps became heavier, and gradually, Han Li began to use one hand to pull the bamboo shoot, using the momentum of the bamboo leaping back to its original position to push it forward.
Han Li endured in this manner for quite some time, At some point, he had become extremely tired, so he had no choice but to find an empty place to sit and rest, his breathing left him in a heavy burst of air.
After taking a breath, Han Li shifted his gaze and looked at the skinny senior behind him. Although the ground was very steep, this senior disciple stood indifferently on the ground as if this was nothing to him. His body was completely clean of dirt, standing upright like a bamboo shoot nearby, while he quietly stared at Han Li in the distance.
Seeing this senior's cold gaze, Han Li felt fear in his heart and quickly looked back. He also heard a heavy breathing sound in front and concluded that one of the faster children also took advantage of this opportunity to rest. After a short break, Han Li quickly continued on his way.
The slope was extremely steep, and Han Li's energy reserves were getting smaller.
He decided to lie flat on the ground and claw his way forward instead of walking on his feet; so much so that if he depleted his energy, he would not fall face down. Fortunately, his clothes were made of a strong material; otherwise, his limbs and knees might have been damaged from being dragged across the rocky ground.
As he was about to reach the end of the bamboo forest, Han Li found it extremely difficult to complete the last few steps. This is because the more rocks and rocks in the ground, the less bamboo shoots.
Han Li finally reached a point where there were no more bamboo shoots he could use to prop up. Han Li slowly moved little by little through this last path and overcame the first obstacle.
As he walked out of the bamboo forest, he could only see a vast expanse of land. In front of him was a huge rocky mountain. On top of a gigantic mountain were some skinny children, slowly climbing up a rock cliff along with some senior disciples who were watching them closely. Han Li did not dare to hesitate anymore and rushed towards the front of the huge rocky mountain.
The few children who were leading had already climbed the furthest. Seeing the others in front of him, Han Li refused to give up. As the thought of giving up flashed through his mind, the shadow of Third Uncle and his family would appear, giving him the motivation to continue. With the memories of her loved ones urging her to continue, Han Li relentlessly stepped forward.
Before Han Li left for the Inner Disciple Exam, Han Li's father and Third Uncle reminded Han Li that his exam would be very strenuous. If he did not survive to the end, Han Li would not have the chance to join the Seven Mysteries Sect. At this moment, Han Li no longer cared about joining the sect. Instead, the only source of motivation that propels him forward is the unwillingness to give up and the urgency to pursue the other who is leading.
Han Li raised his head and noticed that Wu Yan was currently taking the lead. Wu Yan was older than Han Li and even practiced martial arts; unsurprisingly, he had a stronger body compared to the others.
Once again, Han Li turned his gaze back and saw that he had surpassed several children, many of whom were still rushing forward. Sucking in a deep breath, Han Li increased his climbing speed.
Despite depleting most of his strength, he still had not shortened the distance between him and those in the lead. As the unyielding sun rose into the middle of the sky, Han Li's body grew heavier, making it even harder to reach the peak. Meanwhile, Wu Yan had reached the top of that huge mountain.
Near the hundred meter high mountain peak was a very steep Bone Refining Cliff. More than ten ropes, each with a knot the size of a fist, were hung on the top of the cliff. Wu Yan chose one and started climbing the cliff.
Han Li looked at Wu Yan, who was leading, and felt resigned in his heart. He knew that he could not catch up to those in front in the short amount of time left until noon.
The idea of failing was quickly erased by the pain that suddenly emerged from his injuries. Waves of fiery pain weakened the strength of his limbs. Feeling his body fall down, Han Li frantically grasped the stone with one hand. His heart was beating erratically as he quickly attached his body to the side of the mountain, not daring to make any sudden movements.
After a while, he calmed down, using his hand to test the strength of the stone slab. Only after she decided that it was secured in its place did she manage to let go of her worries.
Looking down, Han Li saw that the skinny senior was in a half-squat position with his arms outstretched, preparing to catch Han Li if he fell. However, seeing Han Li safe, the senior withdrew his hand.
Han Li felt relief in his heart. If he really fell off the cliff, all his efforts would be in vain! After a while, he slowly inched forward and crawled towards the remaining rope hanging on the Bone Refining cliff.
Finally, he arrived at the bottom of the rope. The sun is about to reach the center of the sky, indicating that there is only an hour before the time limit runs out. At this moment, Wu Yan had already climbed the cliff and he turned his head to look at the remaining children. Just as Han Li was climbing the rope, his gaze coincidentally met Wu Yan, only to see him giving a thumbs-down to a slower competitor. After laughing crazily, Wu Yan continued.
With anger rising in his heart, Han Li grabbed the rope and started climbing.
However, Han Li had long expended all of his energy. Currently, holding the rope tightly was a challenge for him, let alone climbing the rope.
Miraculously, Han Li climbed up to the first knot on the rope. Sitting on it, he felt as if his body had turned into cotton, unable to move a single finger. He looked up and saw all the children behind him. Some of them had already given up, sitting on a rock mountain and gasping for breath. Like Han Li, they had exhausted all of their strength and were on the verge of collapse.
Han Li could only smile bitterly; he greatly underestimated this test. Fortunately, he was not among the last of the children. After seeing the cold gazes of the senior disciples, he decided to continue. Although he did not have the chance to complete the test before noon, finishing more late was better than hanging limp on the rope.
Han Li stretched out his two stiff hands and used the strength he gained during the break to slowly climb the rope. But at this moment, Han Li's hand stopped responding to his will; he didn't even have the strength to maintain a grip on the rope. Han Li stopped there and lingered for a moment before reluctantly deciding to remain there sitting on the knot.?
