Ephemeral: A Journey To Find The Meaning Of Life

Ephemeral: A Journey To Find The Meaning Of Life
Chapter 20: Filling Something Empty

From Helen's point of view.

Me and some of the Elf kids managed to survive the bandit attack. The chaos that existed in the Eurean continent provided an opportunity for the bandits to seize suddenly. With their large numbers, they were able to defeat a village very easily.

We had to leave that place. I had heard these words from Miss Mary, "Just walk straight east. You'll find a port". So, I decided to believe in it. Because no one knows until when this war will continue.

There are also many casualties from this war. Is my hometown okay? Miss Maria...

"Sister, are we going to be okay?"

"Just calm. Brother will protect you" Helen said.

My job right now is to protect these kids. I think Eshean will be a very safe place for now. But, did I really get to that place, huh.

I've heard these words from Miss Mary. The more you think about something, the further away it is from you. I always think about something deeply. Whether I can protect that person, I always think about it.

"Help me..." Someone who looks dying asks for help.

I always hesitate to help others. The fear of a possible trap, that's what I'm currently thinking. If I help her, we'll be fine.

"I beg you..."

I'm sorry, I can't. I'm not Luke who can help anyone and live by following his heart.

"Helen, being vigilant in various situations is not a bad thing. But, if you really want to do something, do it." Helen was reminded of Luke's words.

Huh... Basic, Luke. I really can't fight you.

"Let me take care of your wounds" Helen said.

Helen took care of the wounds of the dying soldier. With some of the knowledge he had gained from the Elf village, he was able to provide care to the soldier well.

Feeling of helping others, yes... Not too bad. You're right Luke, I might like this.

The soldier was very grateful to me. He hoped to repay my kindness with a request I wanted. I asked him to take us to a port that could take us to Eshean. He agreed to take us.

I realized what Luke meant to me. Helping others is like planting an apple and eating it after the harvest. If you do good to others, that kindness will turn to yourself. And vice versa, if you do evil, you will take it back one day.

How could I not know such a small thing? You taught me a lot about this life, Luke. I guessed where you are right now. Did you do everything well? No-no, if it's you'll definitely go well. After all, you are someone I admire. If we meet again, I will try to be more aggressive, haha!

......................

One of the places that will not be affected by the war might just be this port. This port is very important for the continent. Trade, distribution and production. Everything is in this place.

After walking so far away, I decided we would stay at this place for one day. Many immigrants and traders do their activities here. So, no wonder there are so many lodging places in this place.

As I remembered it, I realized that with my current finances I could only book one room. We had to share a room.

This place did not have a bad look towards Elves. Perhaps, because many merchants who came from outside the continent were of different races. Especially Eshean, a continent that had a very close interracial tolerance. I heard, the human and non-human races coexist on the continent.

Since it was still daytime, I wanted to wander around this place to dispel my curiosity. As I expected, there are a lot of merchants in this place. Immigrants who have different face shapes and hair colors to the people of this continent. It makes me a little more interested in this place.

If only you were with me now, Luke. It's gonna be a lot more fun...

......................

"Let's go back to the inn, everyone" Helen said.

"Yes sis!"

It was almost evening, we went back to the inn to rest. The children slept faster than us, they did not have too heavy a burden on life. Yes, that is how children should be in general.

I look up at the ceiling every night. I wish Luke and I could look up at the same sky. I often remember how Luke and I spent time together. It was so fun, I don't want to forget it.

Luke, if you're looking in the same direction as me right now. Can you hear the feelings I want to convey to you? You know, I'd love to pour out my heart to you right now. Things happened that I had never seen before. I have never regretted the decision I have made to date. And, it's all because of you, Luke!

There's one thing that can always remind me of Luke right now. The necklace Luke gave me was a very precious gift. Every time I look and touch the necklace he gives. I can feel him and remember him.

......................

I'm not the kind of person who is cold and indifferent to others. I just don't know how to start a conversation properly and how to use gestures and facial expressions properly. I thought I was a person who wasn't very good at expressing my feelings.

But, since meeting you, I felt myself changing little by little. I became more courageous to express what I was feeling. Sad, angry, upset, happy and others. I told you, I told you.

You've been in my world since that day. To be honest, no one had ever wanted to fill that empty world that I lived in. But you came in without knocking on that door. Surprisingly, I did not refuse and instead let you in and changed it to be more colorful.
