Ephemeral: A Journey To Find The Meaning Of Life

Ephemeral: A Journey To Find The Meaning Of Life
Chapter 12: The Return Attack

"You've chosen the wrong opponent." Said one of the killers.

We've managed to take out several assassins and execute the plan successfully. The fight continued without pause, I had to keep fighting for a victory.

All the slaves in the cage saw us fighting. They look like they're on our side. Of course, we're the only ones doing this. Suddenly I felt something strange.

I had never felt an aura of existence like this before. But because I was busy fighting, I could not think clearly.

"Take a look at your side!" Caris yelled at me.

While being caught off guard by the aura, I received an attack on the edge of my stomach. His injuries aren't too severe, but if things continue like this, I'm not sure I'll win this fight. The biggest hope right now is Jorgun and Gorris who have not been injured at all. Jorgun was really great, with one hand he could beat over ten people.

I mustn't be a burden, must keep fighting until the end!

I told Caris to open the confinement of the other slaves. I can feel a sense of help from them, that opportunity I will use to increase our winning percentage. Caris stole the key from Bermund's corpse and opened every cage in this place.

Some who were free immediately tried to help us. Half-animal humans are creatures that can fight without weapons. Our numbers are now very superior, things have turned around drastically.

"Quick surrender! Your defeat is confirmed now." My word.

"Don't get cocky first damn it!... Argggh, we were forced to use this because of you!"

The killer expressed his frustration to us. They seemed to take out an injection and then inject it into themselves. I felt something different, they became stronger but lost their minds.

"Take them all away from here, lest there be any casualties! If there's a victim, then we can be sure of failing this mission." Jorgun.

Caris said he would do it himself, we could focus on our task. Gorris arrows were unable to injure the assassin directly, their reaction was really quick. Just a close combat of our expectations at the moment. There were only two more people left, but their strength was truly immense.

Gorris and I worked together to defeat one of them, Jorgun will fight the other alone. Their attacks felt very heavy.

"You see, I'll help you" Gorris said.

I advanced to attack with the help of Gorris up close. We launched an attack with matching movements, as if we had been partners for many years. I never realized that I had a good match for Gorris.

Jorgun had defeated the other one. As expected, he was really very strong and experienced. Both of us are still in trouble even if only against one person. But something strange, I felt something before again.

Again, I felt something stabbing into my heart.

Because of that unfocused mind, I almost received a fatal attack from that assassin. But to my surprise, Gorris' stomach was pierced by the sword that the killer used.

"Gorris!!!" I directly attacked the assassin, but he avoided it.

Damn, what am I thinking anyway?!

The bleeding experienced by Gorris is very severe, if it continues like this he will run out of blood. Jorgun helped us fight this killer, so he asked the two of us to back off. There are things that I did not realize, Jorgun has been very exhausted since his last fight. Although there were no injuries at all, he had already used his full ability from the very beginning.

It's bad! This is the worst situation! I have to think of a good plan. Let's think, Luke!

"We retreat, take Gorris while I hold her!" Jorgun.

I took Gorris away from that place while Jorgun tried to stop the killer. Take him out of the room and go to where Caris is, outside the kingdom.

"Don't talk first, you're a wounded fool!" I said that I was carrying Gorris while running.

Gorris said nothing and just smiled at me. He seemed resigned to the fate he experienced. I told him to hold on until he got to Caris' place.

Before, I had tried to give him all the healing potions I currently had. But it didn't really heal the wounds that had happened to him, because the healing potion I had was not a high level healing herb. The wound he sustained was not an ordinary wound, it could damage his internal organs as well.

Why did it even become like this?! Why do I feel desperate?

I remember the state of Jorgun who was already very exhausted. I doubt he can defeat the killer and return home safely.

......................

"Are they okay?" Caris Mumbled.

Caris thinks she can't keep worrying about us, she also has a very important task to bring those slaves to safety. One of the slaves showed a shortcut to get out of the Amfordia kingdom, through an underground passage through the kingdom that had long been unused.

They managed to get out of the kingdom safely. Caris took them to the forest in the West, where we were attacked yesterday. He thought that it was the best place to hide from the current kingdom, because no one would come to that place. And lots of trees for where they hide.

Back to Luke.

I managed to get Gorris out of the kingdom, but I don't know where Caris went. I just thought of the place that was our destination at the time. I determined that place as the first place to look for it. But I just remembered something, when it was night many royal soldiers were guarding on the outside. It's really going to make it harder.

Not knowing the shortcut, I was forced to take Gorris slowly. The worse it gets, Gorris' bleeding remains severe even though I've been pressing her.

If it continues like this, I won't have time to take her to Caris' place! But, if the kingdom finds out about this, we could be in even bigger trouble.

I had to do it like this. Hostile to a great empire is a very different thing. I can't let that happen.

"Sorry Gorris, hold on a little longer..."

......................

Back to the Jorgun and the killer.

Jorgun continued to fight with his body that had sustained many injuries. Nothing could stop his fighting spirit.

"For someone who only has one hand, you're great. But how long are you going to last under such circumstances?" Said the killer.

"I won't let you hurt those kids, won't!"

"Free, you don't know what you're really dealing with. Our organization is one of the largest in the world! if I tell him about this, end your history!" The assassin threatened Jorgun with his words.

"He's the one you call that, who?" Ask Jorgun.

The killer did not tell Jorgun about the real identity of the person he mentioned. He just said "You'll find out someday".

This battle had already entered its final round. Gorris and I are almost at Caris' place, while Jorgun will soon reach his limit. What end is waiting for us out there? A smile or a cry?
