To commemorate the tragedy, a museum was built called the Aceh Tsunami Museum, which was inaugurated on February 27, 2009 by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Built on an area of 2,500 square meters, this museum was designed by Ridwan Kamil as the former mayor of Bandung who won the competition. The competition was organized by the Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency on August 17, 2007.

Getting to the Aceh Tsunami Museum is easy. As the name implies, this museum is located in the center of Banda Aceh city precisely on Jalan Sultan Iskandar Muda, adjacent to Blang Padang Square and about 400 meters from Baiturrahman Banda Aceh Grand Mosque.
The contents of the Aceh Tsunami Museum building consist of four floors and has several collections that discuss the tsunami incident, namely with a total collection of 55 units consisting of 22 props, 26 photos, and 7 mockups.
On the ground floor of the museum there is an open space that can be used as a public space. When entering this museum, the first room that visitors will visit is the devotional room.
In the room there is a narrow hallway with dim lighting. There is the sound of water flowing on the right and left side of the hallway which is likened to the roar of a tsunami in the past.
After passing through the devotional room, visitors will enter a glass room called “Memorial hill” with a monitor that can be used to access information about tsunami events.
After passing through the memorial hill room, visitors will enter the room “The Light of God”, a cylindrical well-shaped room that shines light. At the top of the room look Arabic calligraphy inscribed ALLAH.
Not only that, on the walls of the room was also filled with the names of tsunami victims who died in the disaster.
Switch on the second floor of the museum, namely access to go to the multimedia room, such as audio room, 4-dimensional room “Tsunami Exhibition Room”, pre-tsunami, while tsunami, and post-tsunami.
Then on the 3rd floor of the museum there are several facilities, such as geological space, library, musala, and souvenirs.
On the top floor, functioned as an emergency rescue or escape building in the event of a tsunami back in the future. On this floor is not open to the public because it remembers the concept of safety and security of visitors, and will only be opened when an emergency or needed.
In 2018, Aceh Tsunami Museum was selected as the most popular museum of 400 museums in Indonesia in the event of Indonesia Museum Award 2018.
